McFarlane DC Multiverse

Eclipso is my Sleeper of the Year so far. When I say that I will never be completely out of this line regardless of what Mattel does, figures like Eclipso are the reason why. This is a gem…no pun intended.

It also speaks to Atomic Knight’s advocacy for including more modern designs,, at least to me. If this had been the classic Silver/Bronze Age version, I wouldn’t have bothered.

I received my case of Platinum Collector figures from the EQL drawing. I haven't opened Joker or Supergirl. I'm not sure about either but I'd rather keep Joker in the box. Also, my order of Larfleeze, Shazam & Starman shipped (label made). Should receive them in about a week.

I saw the full Supergirl Movie shipper display at a local Wal-Mart here in Ohio today. I was actually out looking to see if I could find the 89 Joker Chase anywhere. I still need that one. But the Supergirl Movie figures and the comic figures on the display all looked really good.

Also, with Todd dumping all this merch right here at the end, which I love, I like thinking he was in a Catholic church, contemplating the line coming to an end and how to handle it. He then hit the little Catholic cross thing people do when they are knelt down, stood up, and just like Kurgan in the church in the Highlander Movie yells "I've got something to say. It's better to burn out, then to fade away! "

And he went straight to work on a bat-shit number of toys. Most of them Batman.

I think there are a couple of things at work here. Nothing conspiratorial, just that I don’t think McFarlane Toys has ever made as much money as they have over the last six years with the DC license. Todd can say what he wants about his personal wealth, but a company runs on profits. He’s banking what he can before it’s done. Todd also has partners, heretofore unknown. Gotta pay them too.

I also believe, with no evidence or insider knowledge whatsoever, that Todd is angling to become a subcontractor for Mattel. Or for a piece of the DC license down the road. Obviously after Mattel has re-established itself with the master license. I no longer believe that a parallel 7” collector line is possible. But Todd still wants to stay in the game. In whatever form that takes.

If I know Todd, he's already angling to get to do DC statues based on specific comic covers, like he does for Marvel.

It would be the logical direction for DCD to go. Particularly since no one has addressed what’s going to happen with DCD in 2027. Or if DCD is even a part of the Mattel global license.

Had many qualms with McFarlane but their movie figures are not one. Pretty happy for Bane and Gordon from their respective films. Michael Caine’s Alfred and Liam Neeson’s Ra’s feel like the most glaring omissions left.

As for the comic figures, as usual it’s a ‘wait and see’ approach. I would, in theory, love a Bruce Wayne, Kelley Jones Batman, and Dan Mora Batman. I also really wanted a Batman Incorporated figure and saw how that turned out.

Oddly happy to be getting B&R Bane. He's one of those "I really don't need him, but I'd gladly get him if they made him" figures, along with Talia. I had a moment where I was surprised he was gonna be the first non-deluxe Bane figure we've gotten from McFarlane, but then remembered he's a Deluxe Theatrical. Ah, well- it's not that much more.

The fact we've now gotten/will get unmasked Bale and Keaton heads is kinda nice; I remember a time when their likeness rights were supposedly as hard to get as Nicholson's.

Long Halloween and Kelley Jones Batman I'll keep an eye on. They're 2 of my favorite designs, but I'll see how they translate to figure form.

I’ve been seeing the leaked lists and thinking “oh, they could have given us everything we wanted this whole time.” It’s equally as exciting and frustrating as I’m not sure which teams/characters will be left incomplete at the end of the year.

On the one hand, they definitely know they don’t have to play the variant game anymore. Just give us what we want because the line is ending, and they don’t need to stretch out sales.

On the other hand, I don’t think this would ingratiate themselves with Mattel in any way. Quite the opposite actually….hammering collectors over and over to get as many sales as possible in a short time may cause more to press pause once Mattel starts going. I know the last few months haven’t been easy on my wallet.

Just have fun with it and appreciate the time and joy you get out of it. If you're not, reassess.

I went back to the well to get Fire to go with Ice, and (f'n @docsilence) Cosmic and Lightning Dudes now that we have Saturn.

Fire is a lot cooler than YouTube led me to believe. An eternal lesson that hands on wins every time.

I've been this close to unloading my McF comics figures for a while now. But the movie stuff is staying. I don't see another company doing Batman Forever or Batman and Robin figures, and it helps that the McF versions are pretty well done, as are his Batman Returns figures. The only stinker is the Keaton Batman from the 89 movie, and I think we are getting one more shot at that one. Here's hoping.
