McFarlane DC Multiverse

Yeah, I just went to EB and they had them. Not one I'm interested in, but cool to see.

I'm still waffling on Vigilante.

Mine too. Growing up in the 70s, I was all about the Megos, and of course I had a Mego Supergirl. That prompted me to start collecting all of her 70s comic appearances including her short lived solo book. They weren’t exactly literary masterpieces, but I think I just loved her overall look and the idea of her.

My DC pecking order goes

1) Huntress (Helena Bertinelli)
2) Zatanna
3) Supergirl (Kara Zor-El)
4) JSA (40s-80s and Goyer/Robinson/Johns)
5) Green Lanterm (Hal Jordan)

Supergirl
Batman
WW
JLA
Lanterns (any, but Hal was my OG and my dad is a FA pilot. I like Cruz now because she's basically got all my mental hurdles)

I've not read her old silver age stuff, but I've seen it's available in the compacts. Worth reading then?

Bloodwynd is back up at Gamestop, so I grabbed him. Not thrilled to pay 46 bucks for him after tax and shipping, but it beats driving around to all the local shops for the next month to find him. That pretty much completes my Justice League display from McFarlane, though I seriously lament the lack of Metamorpho and Crimson Fox.

Not really. To be honest, I find Silver Age DC to be incredibly bland. I could say the same about much of the Bronze Age with exceptions like Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams’ Green Lantern/Green Arrow and the usual suspects. It didn’t really get better until the late 70s/early 80s with the influx of Marvel talent. I remember the Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans as the turning point.

I think the two reasons I enjoyed reading Silver Age Green Lantern stories were because 1) They were written by John Broome who was a science fiction writer and 2) Ilustrated by Gil Kane who is my favorite artist next to Perez.

So ironically, considering I was just whining about not knowing where to get them, Black Condor, Capt. Marvel and Gangbuster are in the house.

Condor has off-model Hawkman wings (rather than Vulture-style), a weird mournful expression, and a holster but no knife, so he's borrowing one from Vigilante. But still, who expected this guy?

Gangbuster is really nice, though I question the printed 2-D visor rather than a Booster Gold style overlay; but again, a nice surprise he even exists. If there was more time I could see this re-releasing this as a variant with a shirt torn open to reveal the \S/...

Cap is Cap with yellow detailing (and red wrist-balls?). But he's exactly what you want him to be.

Bloodwinde dings my nostalgia meter ever so slightly.

The Death of Superman was my gateway to the DC universe. There was a Justice League comic that was part of that crossover and I bought it diligently so I could get the whole story. My first ever JL book. There was a guy in it called Bloodwinde and I had no idea who he was and what his powers were. 30 years later of subsequent DC comics reading,…….I still have no idea, really. That lone JL book was the only one I bought until Morrison’s JLA run and by then Bloodwinde was long gone. I don’t know who Bloodwinde was, where he came from, or where he went. I have no other comics with Bloodwinde in it. But I was mildly interested in the guy for that brief moment reading Death of Superman. He was there for the big event.

That’s as far as my Bloodwinde nostalgia takes me. “I know he exists” is as far as I go. Is that worth nearly $50 after taxes and shipping? I am trying to move into the phase of my collecting where that answer is “no”.

Ha ha yeah I remember Bloodwynd from Death of Superman as well! I remember being all “who is this dude and why is a guy called ‘Bloodwind’ wearing a white bodysuit, is he like ‘Nice Spawn’?” And, like, I guess he kinda *was* Nice Spawn. A couple years later, I read in a Who’s Who or some such that “turns out, it was J’Onn all along!” and I was like “ummm OK cool! But if you were already as awesome as Martian Manhunter, why would you pretend to be Nice Spawn?” I’m sure there was a reason.

As a palate cleanser though, I'd been trying to buy a piece by Chris Uminga for like FOUR YEARS and kept missing him at his booth at shows and I found him at NYCC a while back. He had this gaggle of absolute morons pawing at his prints and just being in the way and he saw me and Steph hanging back just trying to not be a pain in his ass, and he hits us with this huge, radiant smile and says HELLO NICE PEOPLE! and invited us up. Finally got that print of Batman and Robin '66 from him and he was an absolutely lovely man. Have it framed in my office to this day.
I met Chris a couple (maybe more) years back at a con and he was super nice. I think it was right before he hit it big, because there wasn't really anyone at his table. Got to chat with him for a minute, and he was really kind. Glad to see he's been getting some much deserved recognition.

Think my favorite con interaction was Tim Sale, though. He did Planet Comic Con in KC like a decade or more ago, and I was able to meet him and get all my books signed (minus Haunted Knight, which I still regret). Wouldn't say he was swamped with people, but there was a steady line. But he still took the time to talk to everyone, ask about their lives and their thoughts on comics and such. Talked to him for probably a solid couple minutes while the line kept building up, but he didn't seem annoyed at all. Super cool guy. Didn't think to ask for a sketch, which apparently he did pretty happily for folks, which I also regret. Kept meaning to catch him again at another Con to finish up the collection, but just never got around to it before he passed. Did end up getting a sketch he'd done (for someone else) of one of my favs, which I hang proudly on my wall to this day. The sketch is unfinished for some reason; the guy I got it from couldn't remember why either, but I take it as a sign. Feels like he left us too soon.

Always a bummer to hear when someone whose work you admire is an asshole. Wouldn't say Alex Ross' style was ever a favorite of mine, even if I can admit that it's beautiful art. But oddly enough, the hyper-realism is also the thing that kills it for me.

I don't really do subs in my displays, but you're right, movie Metamorpho is pretty damn accurate. Maybe Mattel will make a comic book one that I can squeeze into my display though. At this point I'll be using their new line to fill in holes in my McFarlane collection, much like the many folks who used McFarlane to fill in their DCUC collections. So, here's hoping they make a Metamorpho so the movie one can stay in my Superman 2025 display.

Believe it or not, I dipped out of DC for a few years in the 90’s. Right after the Death of Superman. I know of Bloodwynd but not much about him other than the Martian Manhunter connection.

Be that as it may, I’ve always had a thing for solid or mostly solid colored superhero costumes. Solid white or solid black among my favorites. One of the coolest figures I own is Marvel Legends recently released Phantom Rider. Bloodwynd is certainly in that vein. Slick as we used to say in the 90’s. 😁

Best Metamorpho figure evah was the Ramona Fradon DCD one.
