Mattel MOTU Chronicles Movie Figures

The same way King Grayskull is one of my favorite figures of the year, I am kind of in love with those new non-movie figures. Hoping they both have nice non-helmeted heads, for sure, but other than that I think they look fuckin' great. Between that Teela and Movie Teela I feel like we're finally getting the functional/fun figure of her I've never had a chance to buy. Masterverse is good but the articulation was always just sliiiightly too limited.

This is like a Frank Frazetta-style Teela. Kind of surprised they went in this direction with it.

Frikken' Mattel's website won't let me make a login so I can get Gym Bro!

Did a fake preorder and they use Shop, so I'll be fine.

My one and only critique at the moment... I really hate that they're giving Teela heels. STOP giving female action figures heels for no goddamn reason. This is a totally original design. There was NO need to do this.

Yeah, I'm down with this look (except for the heels). I like the armored arm and leg which calls back to the first Man-At-Arms figure which confused the hell out of 5 year old me, "Why doesn't he have armor on his other arm and leg too??!!" and as stated, there's a lot of Frazetta going on which is great. I'd much rather see this direction than carbon copies of vintage looks on new bucks for the 12th time.

Those are some sexy figs, I must say. Mekaneck looks really cool- he's got neck for days! Has anyone figured out how the neck is working, though? Is it bendy wire? Hopefully something strong enough that'll hold up over time. Mattel's pretty good with the thicker bendy wires with the Hammond Collection, but those mostly just go straight out, not up.

Still, they look great, and those new designs are sick. Clawful lookin' like something from Davy Jones' crew. Thought the armored Teela was She-Ra for a second

One thing that does make me a bit hesitant is that there seems to be a few somewhat different styles going on here.

First there's the movie stuff, which is obviously its own thing. Then there's King Grayskull and Scare-Glow, who seem to go together stylistically, and arguably fit fairly well with the movie stuff.

The Clawful and the Mer-Man have a cartoonish style that makes me think of both James Groman and the 200X line. Armored Teela and Armored He-Man(?) feel, as I said, almost Frazetta-ish.

I'm not sure exactly how I will collect this line yet. Of everything, I'm least sure about that Mer-Man - the eyes are just so cartoonish relative to what we've seen from the rest of the line.

I also feel like its off with the character of the toy.

Mer-Man is a king in his own right who chafes under the yoke of Skeletor. He wants to go back to ruling his Kingdom. The figure shown is too bare bones; He needs raiment's, a kind of finery and armor that the Masterverse one had. That still looked Aquatic and armored while still looking Kingly. This is just a sea monster guy. Im more tempted to get a couple as lackeys than as a kind of Kingly Mer-Man character.

It feels a bit like Masterverse in the sense that that line also had a bunch of different artistic directions it was going in; vintage-style stuff, cartoon-style stuff, movie-style stuff, New Eternia original designs.... seems like they want to carry on doing 'a little for everyone' with Chronicles. I'd love to see a proper Chronicles vintage-style He-Man, as much as I'm sure lots of people don't want yet another vintage-inspired line.

A He-Man styled after the vintage one but in the Chronicles style - essentially, a true Marvel Legends He-Man - has been my dream since the 200X line was first announced. The movie one is great, but that's what I'm hoping for eventually.

I initially thought he was just a Merfolk army builder.
