Mattel DC Figures

Man, I'd really dig Warlord and some Elseworlds stuff. It's always made me a tiny bit sad that we've had like 20+ years of Marvel Legends and they've really never done any of the 'What If' costumes/characters.

Glad to see these are scratching that itch for some, but I'm actually kind of looking forward to taking a break and just focusing on things I liked but never bought. If the collector line is compatible with DCUC and starts delivering new characters never made before, I'm sure I'll get plenty, but taking a break until 2027 doesn't seem half bad.

Warlord was actually slated for DCUC before the plug was pulled. Neitlich showed what the next few retail wave lineups were slated to be on one of his Spector Creative You Tube videos.

I'm torn about that because like.. I REALLY want a good Warlord figure, but I also probably would have thrown it in the trash by now if it had actually come out in DCUC. I didn't have a ton of luck with that line (wilting plastic, failing knees, plastic slowly discoloring, etc). But man.. it would have been cool to have him even just for a little while.

I'm usually not interested in A-lister figures so if a line can persuade me about one, I think there's tremendous promise for that line. And I'm at least interested in that John Stewart. Hopefully this or the more collector-driven line will get around to some of my favorites, but I always consider that a nice bonus and not something I'm expecting. By all rights Count Vertigo Mania should be sweeping this benighted nation in 2026, but we don't live in the best of all possible worlds and if he shows up in a James Gunn project it's probably going to be like a Bill Skarsgard cameo where he dies in some embarrassing fashion while Nathan Fillion or Sean Gunn mugs at the camera about it.

I've had not-terrible luck with the lifespan of my DCUC stuff, but I also sold off a ton and a lot of what remains are customs. That Wave 1 Etrigan's still hanging in there pretty well, though. By far the oldest figure I still have from the line and he still looks good.

An addendum to my statement from the previous page:

I’m a huge JSA fan. Dunno if I can resist if Mattel makes them look great. However, I’ll probably make 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths my cutoff. But I’m generous with my interpretation of the JSA. It also includes the SSoV, the Freedom Fighters, the All Star Squadron, the Marvels, the Blackhawks, and even Infinity Inc. Just about anything that Roy Thomas tried to wedge into the property. All in keeping with my personal Multiverse initiative.

The intertwining of Earths 1 and 2 can be tricky. Even prior to CoIE. Gonna leave myself a little bit of wiggle room. Everything else is pretty straightforward.

Warlord would be a great "deep cut" to get in a collector line. I'd love it if Mattel came out guns a blazin' and did a character like that in the early waves.

So, I obviously own all of the Remco Warlord line (and all of the adjacent Remco lines - Conan, Warrior Beasts, etc)

And I do own the DC Direct figure, but that DC Direct figure sucks swollen donkey logs. I honestly hate it. The articulation is terrible and the armor is overdesigned and unnecessarily busy.

I think the problem is that no one is ever going to really be happy. Even if Mattel comes out of the gate with a deep cut in wave 1, it'll be the -wrong- deep cut for half of the customer base. You can signal to the fans that you are willing to do the deep cuts and expanded roster figures all you want - but that doesn't mean you'll ever get to the ones any one particular fan wants to see. In which case... who cares. Making some random bullshit whocares character from the lame-ass teenagers from the future doesn't fill me with confidence that we're going to get Viking Prince. So the only people (person?) that will care is the one that actually wants that specific deep cut character.

Don't get me wrong... they should absolutely do it. I'd say it's critical. But I'll go back to what I said about DCUC -- they actually did come out strong in character selection, and even after basically 30 waves of product or whatever, there are still a lot of holes in that collection even if you -aren't- all about the hardcore ninth-string characters. Fuck, that line never even did Shining Knight and Vig - who, at the very least, were popular characters from Justice League Unlimited.

In another world, Warlord isn’t really a deep cut. Warlord has had his own self titled book four times over the years for a total of 172 issues. Today’s writers may not have a good read on him, but GoT, Witcher, and LotR should carve out some space for him for a mini series once in a while. Amethyst is another good one suffering from the “we don’t know what to do with her” syndrome.

Sadly enough, we’re all getting way out over our skies here. I’m as (or more) guilty of that as the next guy. The truth is that we really won’t be able to access the Mattel collector line until we have at least a year to look at. Which will be January 2028. By that point, we can see roughly where we’re heading. But in February of 2026, that’s a steep curve. I kinda doubt we get the rumors the way we do with Todd.
