Marvel Legends Maximum Series

Man. Watching reviews for Maximum Hulk, his entire upper body above the abs, his chest and such is just a big mushy rubbery overlay. I guess just to allow him to do the big thunderclap. But it seems like something that would tear, or even deteriorate over time.

I don't much care for that. I thought his upper body would just be hard plastic just like the rest of his body, like previous Hulk releases.

Deteriorate or discolor. The material of the chest is actually my #1 reason for hesitating to pick one up, right above not loving the head options.

Jeez, is this Max Hulk a disaster in the making? A total flop?

Is the chest squishy? I’m imagining the material used for DCUC Clayface. I haven’t taken that figure out of storage in like a decade, so I don’t know how bad it might have gotten. I’m imagining Spider-Man Classics Morbius and his melting face. Mine hasn’t melted, but I’ve seen the worst of examples.

I agree. I may not keep my pre order. I understand the rubbery overlay allows his arms more range of motion and hides the butterfly joints. But I'm worried about tearing, deterioration, discoloring, all of that just like you said doc. I don't like two of the heads, but I like the angry gritting teeth head sculpt.

But all in all, I'm feeling like I might not get this one. Which sucks, as I had fully planned to. I have him pre ordered. But I have other Legends Hulks, and I know they'll make more.

I don't think it's quite the same as on Clayface but more like what Storm Collectibles was using on their Mortal Kombat figures.

Not familiar with Storm Collectibles Street Fighter figures. Hopefully I’ll have Max Hulk soon to make my own assessments.

Yeah, I'm always wary of my Storm Collectibles for this reason. They do the same design.

Have never had an issue over the years, but I remember how some of those old figures like Morbius ended up.

Just look up some of the reviews on YouTube NORM. You can see really well the rubbery overlay on the reviews and how it functions.

Here is a link to just one I watched that went over it pretty well.

For most of their figures - Golden Axe to Street Fighter - there's an articulated skeleton, and then the crotch and torso are made of a soft pliable material that overlays.

It hides the articulation, and allows for pushing some poses that molds would not. I have never had an issue with deterioration or discolor, but I keep mine out of sunlight and don't store them under extreme conditions. Whenever I see any damaged figures like this, it's usually because people just throw them in a bin and throw them in a storage unit or an attic without climate control.

My biggest issue is even out of the box sometimes the overlays don't match the tones of the arms or heads. Material issue.

Even hard plastic figures have issues on storage where oils will come out.

The strangest one to me was my Mezco Sovereign Batman. The figure beneath the tights turned pink and you could see it through the fabric. I had never put it in sunlight. It had always been on a darkened shelf. It was not like that when I first got it. And I have seen others that also have turned pink, and others that never did.

Damnedest thing.

I'm not even tempted to get this Hulk. I don't care if he can do the clap, and I don't like any of the heads. Them going with almost all reuse and calling it "maximum"........it deserves all the criticism it gets.

For what it's worth, I find myself taking out that old DCUC Clayface quite a bit. No deterioration yet.

Jada Toys uses the same kind of soft plastic for some of their Street Fighter figures. Ryu and Ken are wearing a gi made of that kind of soft plastic, and I don't remember anyone ever complaining about the future of those in the Jada Toys Street Fighter threads we've had.

The 80th Hulk came with a torn shirt accessory that is also made from a similar soft plastic. I can't see much change in that during the six years I've owned it.

For you people concerned about that type of plastic--what time period are you thinking the degradation kicks in?

I don't think it's necessarily true that no one worries about Jada. I've seen people offer concern that some of that soft plastic won't hold up over time. Most people reference the TB LotR line -- lots of skirts and capes and other pieces similar to Jada's that are made of a similar material as well. The frustrating thing is that some of those parts held up great, some deteriorated fairly quickly. Some held up physically but transferred or picked up paint. Etc. And it's very hard to figure out why X piece didn't hold up and Y piece did. I've definitely seen people worry about that with other lines (not just Jada).

I'd say enough of us have seen degraded soft plastics on enough toys to at least have that concern. Maybe not an extreme reaction of 'this figure is garbage!' But enough to be making comments like 'I hope this holds up over time.' That's reasonable. Because sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't (does ANYONE own a LotR Cave Troll without a melted face?).

The reality is that a lot of our toys are unlikely to be passed down to our grandkids, that's for sure.

The recent Mattel Street Sharks started showing stress cracks on the rubbery face parts around their mouths almost instantly, so you never know. I don't know enough about materials to know if that's the same or not but anything rubbery will always give me a bit of pause.

My worry is because this figure is, by design, asking that rubber to move a lot. My two worries are the armpits with a lot of posing or moving (and if asked to stay in, say, the thunderclap pose, denting the sculpting) and b) if I have to put him in a box for a long period of time for storage, squishing his moobs.

I do worry about this with the street fighter figures, but it's more decorative and asked to bear less weight of plastic so I fret about it less. I've always had similar worries about the underoos on McFarlane figures too, but I reckon since I got most of those for under 15 bucks it's less of a worry than this big boy. I might take a flyer on Hulk if I see him for closer to 50 bucks down the line, but with him going in and out of stock I may not need to worry about that. All that being said, I'm a writer, not an engineer, so I could just be making stuff up to worry about.

I watched a video review of this Hulk the other day and the reviewer compared the chest to Mojo's belly. Personally, I wouldn't be that concerned with it, but I don't know that I'd leave him in a thunder-clap pose indefinitely, which also makes me question the approach since that seems to be a major selling point. I think the figure just doesn't look particularly good and it's mostly the head sculpts. The paint on the teeth in the video I watched was thick and ugly. The 80th anniversary Hulk is a good figure, Diamond Select did a good one for those who like their Hulk really big, and nothing about this new one feels like it earns that "Maximum" designation. I will say, while I don't love how the soft chest fits the figure, it looks like the factory did a good job of getting the plastics to match in color or they simply painted everything.
