They could have kept the monthly cadence if they just changed how they approach the whole enterprise - have the storylines done more in advance so they can release on a monthly cadence, but then switch artists at the change of a story arc - give one a rest/start them on the next plotline. Get rid of fill-in artists and just go to an every-other-story situation.

You're all lucky I don't have a lot of time because I could write several paragraphs about making modern comics better. I agree with what has been said about the art.....I'll just leave it there.

First in hand video I've seen of Psylocke is up. She's looking really good.

Problem is it just doesn't work like that anymore. The baseline art required for a 22 page book is substantively different than it was 40 yrs ago, but the deadline is the same, and the pay hasn't risen appreciably (from what I hear) since the late 90s. Large scale plotting for the big companies like Marvel is generally worked out at their writer's retreats and is absolutely done months and months in advance. Individual issues just take a long time to finish with art chores, edits, and rewrites.

To even approach it you'd need 4 artists a year on any given title, and the thing nobody can account for is if one of those stories in the year is a flashback set during WWI and the landing at Normandy, it won't matter how shit-hot the artist is, they simply cannot get a page of that done as fast as the next story down the line that's set in a desert or in space (or any other place where the background and number of characters is lower intensity).

Generally I think it should've been leaning into graphic novels without strict deadlines for a while now for a lot of reasons.

I ordered my "just in case" Psylocke from CMD. I'm not liking the Nov release date, hope that changes. If anyone needs a Thanos, PM me, maybe we can go halfsies.

😂

This is all intellectual as I have only kept tabs on comics from afar for over a decade at this point, but what you're saying is the same as what I was saying. If the stories are written so far in advance that even goes into my point - if the monthly deadline to print is removed, the artist would have time to breathe. If one of those stories is suddenly set in WWI, which wouldn't be suddenly if it's all written in advance, why can't a guest artist come in for those pages, one who knows WWI? Or have "relief" pages built into ongoing stories? Like how flashbacks or recaps are sometimes used to get TV shows to their designated runtimes.

Graphic novels vs monthly release is an age old issue but the basic fact remains: to eliminate monthly is to eliminate a revenue stream that can never be recovered. That's what all the streamers are continually re-discovering in their chasing Netflix.

For the small press company I work for, we long ago accepted that a monthly schedule isn’t even remotely possible, especially given that we need to crowdfund each issue. So we settled into bi-annual campaigns, launching our books in February and August of each year, and using those funds to finance production of the next issues. It’s not making us any money, but we’re enjoying ourselves.

Psylocke does look great in that video...shame Thanos is virtually identical to the deluxe release. Bleh, Hasbro team, do better.

My main gripe with Thanos is the elongated horns on his headgear. I'm OK with the color scheme. Still, I had all my Thanos figures laid out recently, and I think the answer for me is still going to be Marvel Select.

For what it's worth, the long horns are very accurate to his appearance in the marvel vs capcom games. I see now that his boots and gauntlets have new parts so that's neat. I'm really just upset about the two-pack aspect of it, the figure is fine, just not something I want to buy.

His skirt and collar piece are brand new too compared to the deluxe release from back in 2021

Oh good eye. The collar does look a little more stylish, and I'm not surprised I didn't notice the skirt, it looks a tiny bit longer but otherwise very similar.

I was surprised at how many new parts the new War Machine has too. The entire upper body is new. So is the helmet, shoulders and gauntlets on his forearms. The cannon is obviously also new. I can’t tell with the design of his boots though. The look the same but they also look more bulky than before

I wanted to check before the pre order comes up, but isn't Shuma-Gorath part of like Conan or Kull lore as well?

I know he is a Doctor Strange Villain. But is he part of the Conan mythos?

Yes he was created in the Barry Windsor Smith run and then was briefly used in the Capcom games with Barry’s consent but since then Marvel doesn’t have any further access to the characters name. It’s kind of like a Rom/Krystaar situation. Now I think the name of Shuma Gorath might be technically tied up with Frank Frazetta’s estate
