Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Nice! Thank you!

I saw that had new Thunderbolts footage too. Gonna be a great year for MCU at least

There was this released today:

Anyone know the current status of X-Men '97 S2? And I never saw the response on Fwoosh, if there was one, about how concrete the Champions rumors are? Is it a TV show or film?

Schizm, I did respond to you and I think Fwoosh crashed within a half hour of it, heh. Champions sounds like it's on the verge of being announced and they're getting the behind the scenes team together, and will be a series. They are naming the team Champions in lieu of Young Avengers.

Pulling this over from the first forum because I did think this question deserved a response, from Schizm:
Are you talking about Sam? I'd like to read more paragraphs of what you didn't like. This kind of rage is always entertaining and educational.
:)

I went a second time just to see if I'd like it more and almost walked out as Ross walked into the Rose Garden. But I stayed and luckily it was only about 20 minutes of movie left.

Yeah, I'm mostly talking about Sam. But first let me be clear that the movie sucked anyway. The plot is an absolute mess. Everything here is just more regurgitated shit (I'll get into that more concerning Sam specifically) because Disney only knows how to make one movie. Even little things like having Adamantium be introduced as a new thing they just found in like 2030 or whatever year this movie should be taking place is idiotic and significantly worse than just retconning it into 'it's always been around we just never really talked about it/no one really knew how to make use of it.' So what's next - we get a baby Wolverine that's like 23 years old in 2040? Lame. Super goddamn lame.

As for Sam specifically; I really feel like I need to tread carefully because complaining about Sam as Cap puts me in the same 'camp' as a very disgusting sort of person. So let me be clear: I very specifically dislike Sam as Cap because they refuse to use him as Sam and continue to treat him effectively as 'the guy that isn't Steve' while also refusing to USE him in a way that isn't just like Steve with a fancy backpack. If they wanted this to be the way Captain America was presented post-Rogers, then BUCKY should have been Captain America. Because Bucky is a goddamn super soldier.
You know who isn't? Bird-wings backpack guy.

I think there's something really interesting about the idea of bringing Captain America down to a street level hero for a while. Dealing with big issues, sure, but on relatively human terms. But Sam's two initial outings as Cap have been fucking trash. He's literally now fought against a band of rebels beefed up on SUPER SOLDIER SERUM, and a FUCKING HULK. It's absolutely absurd. Both of these enemies would have turned Sam upside-down and stomped his shit into his cranium without breaking a sweat. But he's got wings, so I guess that balances out being otherwise a literally regular fucking dude with like.. a regular-strength ribcage, right?

There's a scene in the new movie where I literally almost yelled at the screen. You guys may remember Sam catching a goddamn lightpole or some shit swung at him by A FUCKING HULK. And the movie's conceit here is that he uses the propulsion system of his fancy backpack to boost himself and help apply forward pressure to push the pole backward. Except... FUCKING WHAT? That's like standing against a brick wall and 'catching' a speeding car. Something pushing you from behind doesn't make you able to withstand incredible force slamming into you from the front. Are these people on fucking crack? Sam's arms would have shattered, followed by his entire upper body. He's. Just. A. Dude.

And again, I have no problem, in theory, with a version of Cap that's just a dude. But you gotta allow the movie to treat him that way. Instead, Marvel wants to enjoy the spectacle of still treating him like Steve Rogers, while thematically being able to enjoy the implications of him being Sam Wilson. So now Cap has no identity. He's Steve whenever they need him to do Steve things, and he's Sam whenever they need to point out that he's not Steve. It's the absolute worst dogshit writing I think would be possible for a film like this. Lazy, insipid, soulless. And, moreover, absolutely insulting to the viewer's intelligence.

I think the idea of a black Captain America has so much potential. But again, Disney actually wanted Bucky to be Captain America from a 'fun to make movies' perspective, and a black Captain America for optics. And with this movie and the TV show, it's incredibly obvious that they're trying to just keep doing both things at once because they clearly don't think there's value in a more street-level Cap. Also, hilariously, they don't seem to see the value in actually engaging with what it might mean for Captain America to be a non-powered black man beyond a few throwaway lines of dialogue in a TV show that sucked.

It's infuriating.
