Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

I have the decency to try to hide the fact that I’m crying. Charge of the Rohirrim, Thor arriving in Wakanda in IW, shirtless Ben Grimm pulling that big chain in the new FF trailer. I collapse into my seat and disappear. (Jk I know it’s psychologically unhealthy to be weird about crying)

Don’t even get me started on the most inappropriate place I cry in the MCU

Sometimes I put on these movies TO have a cry. Too much pressure, gotta turn that valve. Gandalf in LOTR is a big one for me. My mom's best friend, my 'aunt', I always associate with Gandalf. I know the last movie she watched before she died was Fellowship, then Two Towers came out and he returns (spoiler) and I dont know... The sweetness he has with the Hobbit children and the fireworks etc, but also his sternness... And making friends everywhere he went, very much like her. And him coming back. Ah man. And the part when he confirms Pippin in the middle of the battle? Falls of Rauros, I am.

Ugh. Its so embarrassing.

So this is phase 1 of the MCU. The order of the day when making comic movies is that you "have to keep them grounded". Its something I agree with in principle. Something that works in a 2D piece of comics art or animation doesn't necessarily work in live action. The X-Men wear black leather motorcycle suits, the Green Goblin is a BMX Power Ranger, Marvel had to fight to get Iron Man to fly, Thor needs to spend an hour and a half depowered fighting SHIELD agents, etc. I like all these movies to varying degrees but it was a cap to them. They always held a little bit at arms length the silliness of comics. So the Avengers rolls around, the first 30 minutes is off to a good start then they reveal the helicarrier and I start to cry. Not that I care that much about SHIELD or the hellicarrier or anything; just that they say "fuck it; its stupid but its fun. Let's do it."

@Ru1977, I think you have the right of it. I can tell you from memory what movies are in Phases 1-3, but need Wikipedia to tell me when Phase 4 ends. Having Thunderbolts cap the Phase where all these characters were introduced would've done a lot to solidify it. I don't follow a lot of the production stuff, though. Was it ever the plan to do that and it just kept getting postponed?

Just thinking out loud, but I wonder if part of the vibe comes from not letting the new characters take the reins. Like, all the multiverse stuff was handled by old Infinity Veterans like Loki, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange and Ant-Man. Meanwhile, the characters new to Phase 4: She-Hulk, the Eternals, Ms. Marvel, etc. were lucky if they got to be a prequel to Captain America. Just a thought.

I just watched Thunderbolts, and I freakin' loved it! It was so much fun and really had a bit of everything. Humor, emotion, a bit of fear, and good action. It was very well written and very well performed by all the actors.

Yelena and Bob/Sentry steal the show, especially together. Great chemistry. i think my personal favorite though was John Walker/US Agent. I always like the Cap characters be it Cap, Winter Soldier, Sam, etc. And I liked Wyatt Russel as US Agent immediately in the Falcon/Winter Soldier show. He just shined even more here with this performance and really left me wanting way more US Agent.

The movie was pretty real for me on a personal level too. Covering depression and mental illness. But it was done in a beautiful way that not only made you understand the pain and hardship, or even emptiness of the problem, but also made it clear why you try, keep fighting, and don't give up.

A very surprising theme to see played out and executed so well in a superhero movie.

Go watch this. I think this is one of the best the MCU has given us in sometime.
I was waffling on whether or not I cared to see it or not but if it's good enough for the Camel it's good enough for me. I'll catch it sometime soon.

Awesome, and I totally get that. Especially after all that groundedness, they earned some straight up science fiction. Music swells, and they set the tone for the movie. It's still kinda crazy to me, even after Infinity War and Endgame, that Avengers worked so well. I remember people freaking out, how can you have Thor and Iron Man in the same movie?! Tech and magic?! you can have them in the same movie by leaning in and charging right into it, damnit!

I think you have the right of it.
Awesome! No sarcasm.
I can tell you from memory what movies are in Phases 1-3, but need Wikipedia to tell me when Phase 4 ends.
Exactly the same. I absolutely had to look them up to see which fell where, and in what order.
Was it ever the plan to do that and it just kept getting postponed?
I actually don't think it was. The earliest release date I could find for Thunderbolts was the one Deadpool and Wolverine ended up with for last July, which would have kept Thunderbolts in Phase 5. And not ended the phase either. So I think it's just happenstance that it did. And that's fine, I know some of the MCU's greatest moments were thought of on the fly, no problem. And I do understand why Feige didn't want to end each phase with an Avengers movie after Endgame. Maybe he was right, I'm not entirely sure, but they needed something to close a phase. Some event. Not a small team up like Ragnarok, Homecoming, or even Marvels, but something with a bunch of people from that phase.

One of my favorite moments from Infinity War is Iron Man fighting Cull Obsidian and Spider-Man just shows up. Because it's New York and heroes can swing right by. Was it necessary to weave him in with some reason, like Banner's gamma knowledge being why Fury brings him in to search for the tesseract in Avengers? Nope. He's in the area and jumps into the fight. For me, that was one of the most comic-booky moments in the entire movie, and that's all they had to do with a movie ending Phase 4. These people are all in the area together, let's watch them argue and team up for two hours against a neat villain. maybe we get a credit scene setting up some other nugget, whatever, but now I know that Phase is concluded.
I wonder if part of the vibe comes from not letting the new characters take the reins.
I'm not sure if you're right either, but it makes a lot of sense. That was one of my complaints about the star wars sequel trilogy. Yes, I love the OT people, but if you're gonna introduce new characters, then lets go for it. but each movie leaned on OT people and never let the new people stand fully on their own. Not even the villains. but yeah, to your point, Marvel did it even worse. That's why I actually always argued that more movies would be better. You can service the original people some more, and let the new kids shine more. Otherwise, I guess maybe do like Homecoming and have an older character be supporting. Though I do still like Marvels for its character dynamics. I know not everyone enjoyed it, but I'm a huge Kamala fan, and I feel like she and Monica were just as important as Carol in that one. Which... is also a bummer for Carol really.

I don't know. Maybe you just can't win! heh.

Okay, a few things to note:

The Netflix shows and Agent Carter are considered canon. They're on the list.

I left off the cartoons. My dudes, please. I would be working on my 19th nervous breakdown if I had to figure out where shows like I Am Groot and What If? fit into all this.

The Sony Spider-Man Universe of Characters without Spider-Man movies are off the list. I don't care if Michael Keaton showed up in Morbius and I don't care if Tom Hardy showed up in Spider-Man No Way Home. Those Sony movies make me and little baby Jesus cry. Hot, streaming, bitter tears. It's really sad. And kinda pathetic. But there it is.

And Ru, buddy, take note: The only MCU phase that ended with an Avengers movie was phase one. True story. Phase two ended with Ant-Man. Phase three ended with Spider-Man: Far From Home. Phase four ended with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Phase Five will end with Iron Heart. Now, we're all assuming that phase six will end with Avengers Secret Wars. But not necessarily. Marvel has a currently untitled movie scheduled for July 23rd, 2027, just a couple of months after Secret Wars. That could be the big wrap up to the Multiverse Saga. The point is, a phase or even a saga doesn't necessairly have to end with an Avengers movie. I find that surprising. I was floored when I found out phase two ended with Ant-Man and not Age of Ultron. But again, there it is.

Speaking of untitled movies, there's one scheduled for February 13th, 2026. There's no way. To make that date, the movie would have to be deep in production right now. Unless it's the best kept secret on planet Earth, there's nothing that it could be. Wonder Man, DD season 2, Doomsday and Spider-Man 4 are the only projects that are in various stages of pre and post production that we know of and those have release dates.

I imagine we will find out more about Marvel's plans for the future at SDCC in July. As always, I will be there.

Awesome, agreed!

Fair enough.

Good!

But seriously, I get your point. I always saw Antman and Far From Home were kinda palate cleansers after the big event ending heh. But I agree Secret Wars probably won't be the final movie of the saga, but even still I think phase 4 needed something at the end, or even the penultimate release, to signal the end.
To make that date, the movie would have to be deep in production right now
Right, I agree. Really doubt it will be something, but I would defecate on myself in shock if they kept it hidden.

I hope we do, and thank you for your service!
