Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Also, I'm another lover of Eternals. I am okay with not every movie tying firmly into the greater MCU, especially when they clearly exist in the same universe. But I love alternate tales on historical events/myths, and felt it was kinda fresh compared to the rest of the MCU.
 
The FF trailer was a lot of fun and goofy in a way that fits. One of my kids is into it, so I may see it in the theater.

I don't think any of them are into Thunderbolts, but I'll see that one alone if need be.
 
Really dug the new trailers for F4 and Thunderbolts. I haven't found myself as excited for MCU movies, let alone back-to-back ones, in a while, it feels like. I too really liked Eternals, though I do need to rewatch it. Same with Endgame and Shang-Chi. I remember loving the former and quite liking the latter, but the pandemic really threw my ADHD out of whack in a way it hadn't been in years, and it feels like I'm just now kinda coming back to "normal", whatever that is. So it's been hard for me to really devote 3 hours of attention to a movie if it isn't in a theater or a friend's house.

Anyway, I really hope these 2 are a return to form for the MCU. I wanna say Brave New World was the last movie they did before they restructured things, but it may have been Thunderbolts. Regardless, I'm hoping that from here out, things feel a bit tighter and more cohesive, and don't forget that sense of fun. Thunderbolts and F4 do look pretty fun, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

I also dipped my toe into Daredevil: Born Again, as well. I've always had a thing for Daredevil, even if I haven't stayed as up to date with the comics as I should, and I too never got around to watching the Netflix show (I know, I know- bad nerd). I like what I've seen of Born Again so far; it's nice to have something that feels a little more grown-up, minus the shlock and humor of Deadpool. Would love to see this Daredevil or Punisher interact with some of the more light-hearted heroes we have left- Spidey, Ant-Man, etc.

And between Daredevil and F4, I'm getting a nice little twinge of nostalgia from my childhood- those early pre-MCU Marvel movies are a mixed bag, and one could argue both DD and F4 are toward the bottom of the list, but they've always held a special place in my heart. They definitely added fuel to the fire that was (and is) my love of comics.
 
The F4 trailer looks more interesting than any actual F4 comic I've ever seen, as a famous F4 hater. I haven't been paying attention, so I actually didn't realize this was going to be on an alternate Earth/timeline/whatever. Could be interesting but also definitely not something I'd ever go pay money to see.
Daredevil was really good, but I feel like it has a bit of the 'and so the story continues' problem where it serves as a 9-hour set-up for something else instead of being its own thing.
 
Catching up ...

Daredevil Born Again was amazing. I don't know what it is about this character, but whether it's comics or live action he seems to bring out the very best in whoever the creators are. Born Again was an incredible graphic novel. The TV show did it justice. Very much looking forward to Season 2 and I'm hopeful for a Defenders reunion.

Count me in as an Eternals fan. I loved Jack Kirby and Neil Gaiman's comics and I loved the film. I l think the dynamic between Dane Whitman and Sersi is amazing and I hope we see them both again someday.

I love the Fantastic Four. I have loved them for 60 years. Stan and Jack had a lot of cajones for lettering "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" on the masthead of the FF. But ya know what? They weren't wrong. Their run of Fantastic Four featured the first appearances of the Black Panther, the Silver Surfer, Galactus, Doctor Doom, the Inhumans, the Skrulls, the Kree, the Watcher, Adam Warlock and the first Silver Age appearance of the Sub-Mariner. This is the title that ushered in "The Marvel Age of Comics" and made me a founding member of The Merry Marvel Marching Society, FOOM (Friends of Ol' Marvel) and WAM (Wild Agents of Marvel). Yes, I love the FF and I make no apologies. The trailer looks amazing. One of my biggest wants in live action superhero movies is a truly great FF film and it looks like I'm about to get my wish at last.

Thunderbolts looks like so much fun. Way back when this Marvel Cinematic Universe thingie started, if you had told me that one of my favorite characters would be Yelena Belova, at first I would have said "Wait. Isn't that the blonde girl that tried to replace Natasha?" Then I would have laughed to the ground.

But here we are, 17 years later, and ... life is full of surprises. I don't know what it is but I am a huge fan of Yelena. I think part of it is Florence Pugh's deadpan delivery and part of it is the absolute venom in her voice when she hurls a verbal zinger at someone but whatever, she is hysterical and I'm a fan. I am very much looking forward to this film. I hope we get some answers to questions that have plagued us for awhile. At least now we know who bought Stark Tower.

So anyway that's where I'm at right now. I love the MCU and I hope it continues for a long, long time.
 
My view on Eternals has softened a bit, but that just means it went from being terrible to me being indifferent about it.

I've never been a comics Eternals fan, so it was already an uphill battle, but the thing I found most interesting about the movie wasn't actually in the movie. When I saw the cast, I became interested in the idea of a group of uplifted humans from around the globe, but instead they were space constructs with nothing to do with actual humanity. That was such a disconnect for me that I barely cared for any of them. I also had a personal struggle with the Deviants as depicted. My old-man eyes keep me from actually understanding what I was seeing. It's like the Bay Transformers movies. There's just so many moving parts and squiggles and alien shapes that it's just visual noise.

I did enjoy the double plot twists, though, that neither Kro NOR Druig were the big bad guys and fell for both misdirects. And Makkari is the best depiction of a speedster on the screen. All told, the good things cancelled out the bad things, and the rest was just whatever. I give is 3 out of 5 Mehs.
 
I never read any comics with any of the characters in the Eternals movie, but I was also as unfamiliar with GOTG before that movie came out. I'm sure we've all been guilty of letting our own expectations get in the way of enjoying a movie for what it really is though.

I really urge you to try it. It's all on Disney Plus now. if you enjoyed Born Again, I'll be very surprised if you don't love the original series.
 
First ... Eternals. I still love that movie. I've seen it half a dozen times. Its my wife's favorite Marvel movie. No one can convince me its bad. I'm sad it didn't do what Marvel wanted, didn't get its sequel and dragged down plans for Black Knight, Starfox and other things.

As for Daredevil - I did a full rewatch. Started with Netflix season 1, watched all of it along with the Defenders, Hawkeye, Echo and the one episode of She Hulk to get the full Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk story before starting Born Again. All of it is good and I'm eager for Season 2 and as much more as they are wllling to give.

Excited for both Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four. Can't wait to see how this new phase progresses.

Definitely. I got to the end and probably asked myself aloud "That's it?" When Game of Thrones was on its roll, that show did a really good job of paying off a season in the penultimate episode and then using the finale to setup the next season. Daredevil just stops in its tracks. I'm almost surprised they didn't flash "To be continued..." on the screen. It didn't ruin the season for me or anything, and other media has done a worse job of this in the past (looking at you Spider-Verse), but it's inelegant story design, at best.

One factor may be the show was originally to have an 18 episode first season. Then things got overhauled, some rewrites occurred, three episodes were completely redone, and they decided to split it into two seasons.
 
Some of my friends have asked me "Why is the Sub-Mariner in Doomsday? Where's Nick Fury? Where's Spider-Man?" ect.

I don't know why some names are missing on the cast list, but I think I know why Namor's on it.

Namor will fall in love hard with Sue (It's Vanessa Kirby, so ... yeah). Sue crushes on Namor a little bit. Dr. Doom, swearing vengeance on the Fantastic Four, recruits Subby to destroy the male members of the team. Fisticuffs ensue. Eventually the Sub-Mariner becomes a hero again.

Will it play out this way in Doomsday? I dunno. But that's the only answer I have to the "Why Namor?" question. It'll be interesting to see how it goes down.
