Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Yes it needed more time - especially to explore the Carol and Monica dynamic around their falling out which could have had a great talking scene,
Definitely a big fat agree.
and we needed to see more of Carol's attack on the Kree homeworld at the start
Which is another thing I wonder if there was a longer version for.
and why she was struggling helping the Skrulls
Yes, another thing for sure.
(and I wish someone would acknowledge why she looked like she was the same age as she was in her intro picture set 20 to 30 years prior)
That's one I just kinda took as a byproduct of her powers/tesseract explosion etc.
... I also think the inclusion of Kamala's family was a bit of a drag on the film - as much as I liked them in the show, they needed to be left on Earth and not be on the space station seeming to be more calm about people being swallowed by cats than the crew was....
I can see why you say that, but they never bothered me. The Marvels is truly amazing because there are quite a few things I would never have expected to enjoy, yet did. I've mentioned the singing planet before, and when I heard about it I had a massive "oh.... great" in my head, but I somehow actually enjoyed it. Yes I want more, particularly the things you listed. I don't even really care that the villain is one of the weaker Marvel ones.

I might have enjoyed their inclusion more if the film didn't have the habit of pivoting to them at times when I wanted more "Marvels" interaction. The family's screentime seemed disproportionate to their role in the story, maybe?

I can get behind that, yeah. Getting more time with the title characters and more in depth into the conflict between Carol and Monica, as well as getting more into what Carol did wrong etc with the Skrulls and Kree as well, all that would be great. But definitely a few more beats with the title characters just in general. Seriously, they could add 15-20 more minutes with no problem as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, the whole film felt like each character needed more time to cook so when everything started happening, the audience was both informed and invested. Loved seeing Kamala's family interacting with Carol and Monica, but it felt like there needed to be like, thirty minutes of more story to get there. It really did feel like they forced the writers and directors to shove two movies and a TV show into one script.

Vanessa's the only core casting I like.

I think Pedro & Joseph are horribly miscast, and I think Ebon is criminally miscast (and yet another instance of reusing an actor for a different character that I am beyond sick of).

I finally watched Thunderbolts with the wife today. Fucking loved it. To me, this felt like a return to form for Marvel movies and goes back to capturing what I really like; when comic book movies feel like what I guess I'd call classic comics.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy a pretty wide range of comics, and I think they're all valid. Savage Sword of Conan doesn't feel the same as West Coast Avengers, and that's perfectly fine. But my mental picture of a 'comic book' when you first say those words is a story that's big and colorful and can oscillate between stupid-goofy, action-packed, dramatic, and incredibly sad, all within 30 pages. Without giving you whiplash.

I feel like Thunderbolts did that for me. The humor never felt out of place, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the action, or from getting emotionally invested in those deeper character moments. I really loved it. I hope the MCU can get back to this as the regular. Make me love the MCU again.

When the FF cast was shown, the guy playing Johnny (Quinn) seemed the most "off" to me. I've always pictured him being more of a "pretty boy" for the girls but he looks more "plain" to me. Not an ugly dude, but just not "Johnny". BUT...I think he's going to be a break out for me. His personality in the trailers is EXACTLY how I think of Johnny. Especially in the earlier decades. Just a few more days...

A brilliant scientist ... his best friend ... the woman he loves ... and her fiery tempered kid brother! Together, these four braved the unknown terrors of outer space and were changed by cosmic rays into something more than merely human! MISTER FANTASTIC! THE THING! THE INVISIBLE WOMAN! THE HUMAN TORCH! Now they are THE FANTASTIC FOUR .. and the world will never be the same again!

Fantastic Four numbers 48 through 50. This three part story became known on college campuses all over the world as "The Galactus Trilogy".

This is when the Fantastic Four met God. BOTH versions of God,

Galactus represented the God of the old testament. God the angry. God the vengeful. God the destroyer. The Watcher represented the God of the new testament. God the loving father. God the forgiving. God the merciful.

The Silver Surfer was the Christ like figure that was willing to sacrifice his life to save humanity.

And caught in-between all of this was our Fabulous Foursome.

Only a true visionary like Jack Kirby could have conceived of something like this. This was unlike anything ever done in superhero comics. This story to me is the defining moment of the Marvel Universe. This is when Marvel really became Marvel. Trust me, no one else was doing anything remotely like this. To say it got everyone's attention was the understatement of the century.

Avi Arad, a studio exec who produced a lot of the Marvel movies at Sony and Fox, is a nice guy. He had the best of intentions. But he became a Marvel fan late in life. He didn't grow up reading these comics. He's not seeing these stories with the awe and wonderment of a child. Hence Galactus as a big storm cloud,

In contrast, Kevin Feige HAS read Marvel his whole life. He gets it. He really gets it. He understands what the stakes are. He's a comic book fan who's also a movie producer. That's why I believe we're finally going to get a Fantastic Four movie that's going to look and feel like the Fantastic Four we grew up with.

I'm going to see the movie Thursday evening with the comic con crowd. The real fans. That's perfect, really. Just the way it should be. It will take me a while to process it, I'm sure. But that's alright.

At long last, the wait will be over.
