Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Suicide Squad

To be fair, I quite liked THE Suicide Squad (Gunn's version) which I think Thunderbolts skewed a little closer to; it was just the PG-13 version of it. I would argue that Thunderbolts miiiight be the better made of the two, but I would argue that TSS is the more stylish of the two, though whether that's a good thing or not is, I suppose, up to you.

I liked the Gunn one, and I liked... A couple things about the first one. Heh. But I definitely see the comparison with that first one, but good. Way more focused.

Would they have escaped with five of them in that shaft? Or did they have to reshoot that entire scene? That seems very unlikely, because all the character dynamics would have to be shifted. Not that Marvel can't - or hasn't - done that in Post before, but the timing of this film doesn't suggest they had the time to do that.

And with eight legs you have an asterisk. Ten legs... that's too much!

I assume we'll find out more about what was actually filmed and what wasn't. Apparently, despite being the longest post credit scene in MCU history, the post credits scene was even longer, with Bucky and Walker arguing about whether or not it was a four on the ship. Stan compared it to "Who's On First" and Russell said it was Leslie Nielson-esque.

Yesterday was a good day. Saw Thunderbolts* in the afternoon then went to one of the best concert experiences of my life (more on that in the "listening" thread later) in the evening. I only saw the the teaser and the Brazilian trailer avoiding all other clips and spoilers :)

Like everyone else is saying, the best Marvel film in a long while (though, MoM is still my personal favorite since Infinity War).

I'll get my one major negative out of the way. There was absolutely no need to
bring Taskmaster back for 1 line and kill her off (unless she has regenerative abilities--not very familiar with the character in the comics). That scene would've played completely fine without that. It would've been better if this wasn't completely obvious from the teaser. At least then we could've gotten some shock value out of that scene. That just ended being eyerollingly lame for me. Did the actress want out of her contract that badly?

I thought they were pretty harsh on Agent as far as writing of his character and also how the other characters treated him
until they mentioned the why of him being an even bigger dick than he was on the show.
Still, I have mixed feelings about his treatment as he is a favorite from the comics and the FWS series. I felt the same as I did when we went from the varied, layered and smart writing of Gruenwald's building of the character and Byrnes equally smart way of planting seeds we never got to see him develop when he added him to Avengers West Coast; then going to Thomas' ham-fisted, oversimplified writing where Walker just becomes the asshole on the team.

Pugh had me teary eyed a couple times, but finally broke me when at her lowest point
said "Daddy" and her voice cracked just a bit.
The floodgates opened on this crotchety old man 🙈 Kudos to her for her performance in that scene. That said I felt either her scenes could have been a bit shorter to be more impactful, and/or the film could've been a bit longer to give other characters much needed development But it's mainly her film, so it can't be perfect anyway.

Don't think I've ever read a comic with Sentry, but was vaguely familiar with his character from many references. I liked him a lot as written and as portrayed by Pullman. His CG was pretty clunky in the Watchtower fight unfortunately. At least this was the only time where the CG briefly took me out of the film.

Thought they went just a bit overboard with Guardian (yeah, I know...), but still it's great to see Harbour in anything. Not to mention I'm a sucker for patriotic superheroes and we get 3 of them (regardless of what Val thinks) interacting in a film again.

And Ghost was in the film... 🤷‍♂️ She had some funny lines, I guess. RE: My above statement about development. We don't know anything more about her than we did Antman and what we could already gather from the teaser.

Taskmaster -- RE: My above statement about development.
Just added to look like there is something to talk about with her. Pretty clever, eh?

I appreciated the less "traditional" action in the film and felt those scenes aligned well with the subject matter, which is why I think this film is resonating with audiences more than average.

From the announcement of the film, I thought the * was going to be
Dark Avengers, but while watching the film figured that was extremely unlikely, so was curious what it would turn out to be. New Avengers was a letdown. LOL!

I take it back I did get 1 spoiler in the film when during the credits
I saw "Fantastic 4 theme by..."
Don't read anything in the credits if you want to avoid this extremely minor spoiler 🤓

Apparently an early draft of Thunderbolts

They were planning to have Walker turn into Red Hulk as Val's failsafe to take out the team. This would have led to the team coming together to talk him down rather than eliminating him, and ultimately that concept was transferred to Sentry instead. This was apparently if I'm understanding correctly, NOT in lieu of Red Hulk in Cap 4, but in addition to. A second Red Hulk was apparently going to appear on screen just months after the first. REALLY glad they didn't go with that, mostly for repetition's sake, and also because I love the Sentry arc, but also partly because comic fans would lost their minds.

OMG that would've been terrible. What were they thinking--even at that early stage? It's shocking they would think of that, let alone actually put it into a script. I can't believe how random the MCU seems now compared to how it used to be.

That makes me wonder if Ford is signed up for more than one film at the moment.

I feel it's always been more random than it seemed, but they may have been paying more attention to how things related. My wife asked me today

If I thought it was purposeful to have Yelena being the primary calming source for Bob when he sister was similar for Bruce. And I didn't know at all, but I kinda doubt it..I haven't seen anyone else mention that in interviews so I'm not even sure if the creatives behind Thunderbolts noticed that parallel.

Wow! Good for her for noticing that so quickly. Don't know I would've ever made that connection on my own.

I thought of it. The Widow of it all. Which, my Mom didn't easily put it together that Yelena's sister was Natasha. I feel like they needed a photo of them together, or something, or for Alexei to mention Natasha by name. Did he? I had to pee during the limo scene and should have waited for the action part of the scene.

Also, Melina? No mention. Wish she'd just been the villain in Black Widow.

It also kinda still bothers me that Yelena speaks with such a heavy accent given she was raised in America during her most formative years AND is an international spy I assume can speak multiple languages and blend in.
