Marvel Cinematic Universe Figure Discussion

the only way to be against him or to describe his line of thinking as fascist is to not truly explore the question.
We’ll just have to agree to *strongly* disagree there.

“Truly exploring the question” is great for The Boys. There’s a longer conversation to be had here, maybe not in this thread.

Suffice it to say: I don’t go to superhero comics for realism. I go for *aspiration*. I didn’t find anything in the mainstream of that era of Marvel to aspire to.
🤷‍♂️

Also, and this is the big one: “Mutant Registration Act bad, Superhero Registration Act good” does not compute.

I sense a pending philosophical debate incoming...

Civil War got me into reading comics full-time. Mileage may very, but I never had an issue with comics getting heavy or dark, so long as earned emotional beats came from it. Recently, the Genosha X-Men episode was very real and dark... and one of my favorite episodes of the entire show (original run included). I wasn't enraged by Tony becoming pro-registration - the story needed it. I wasn't thrilled by Cyclops' villainous turn either, but it didn't ruin my day. Characters will sometimes be the victim of bad writing. My favorite random character is Ben Reilly, and since he was revived 20 years later has become a villain twice. name of the game.

As a huge fan of both Stan Lee and Marvel I will never understand people disliking modern comics. The great majority of 1960s and 1970s comics are unreadable from a modern perspective, and I usually assume it's nostalgia misleading people to think comic stories used to be better in the earlier days of Marvel and DC.

Writing quality on comics took a big jump in the 2000s. Before that the stereotype of comics was that they were for kids so good writers weren't attracted to the medium, but by the 2000s superheroes were extending into the mainstream of acceptibility and comics were attracting writers who previously would have gone into journalism, film screenplays, or other forms of more artistic literature.
For me, it's the story pacing and how events ruin runs. For me. The late 70s to 80s was the sweet spot. Modern comics are all 6 or 7 issue stories where barely anything happens and it's mostly talking aimlessly. Then we only get like 2 or 3 complete stories before a massive event that changes the status quo that they only just established. Single issues back in the day had a complete experience or at least a lot better plot progression. Yeah, 60s and early 70s comics can be very goofy and kiddy, but even by the 80s the storytelling matured a lot. I wish there was less giant crossovers and stories just had better pacing. Why I tend to prefer the movie versions of a lot of more contemporary stories anymore

I never had an issue with comics getting heavy or dark,
Heavy and dark is my facorite. Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth is what kept me reading comics past my tweens.
Big difference, for me anyway, between “heavy and dark” and “characters I used to love are now unlikeable assholes and fascistic killers”. Just my personal perspective.

To get somewhat back to the topic of figures- AMC showed off some of their concession items for F4, including a Galactus popcorn bucket. I'm not expecting it to be huge, but I wonder how it would look with Legends around it.

Edited to add: apparently it's 20 inches wide and 17.5 inches tall, so not entirely to scale, but could still make for a pretty epic display piece.
This is something I want! Red Guardian's limo was $49.99 at AMC which is waaayy too much for being out of scale but I was tempted. I wonder how much Galactus will be. And I can't quite figure out how big the HERBIE version is and the Fantasticar at Regal looks nice!

They're really going all out for this one. I got the R2D2 concession vessel thing way back when- holds your popcorn in its body and your drink in its head. A super cool piece that I still have, though I will say, it takes up a fair bit of room, so the buyer's remorse sets in from time to time. 😅 I'm hoping Galactus isn't any more than 50- that seems to be what most of the more intricate ones are, whereas the barebones ones like Batman's cowl or Vader's helmet seem to be more 25-35, depending.

I’m at a theater right now in Manhattan to watch a play starring Hugh Jackman and Charlie Cox is sitting at the end of my row! I said hi but didn’t have the brass to ask for a selfie.

Probably close to what I'd say to him.

Charlie Cox was so friendly. I went over to him and he asked “haven’t we met before?” To which I replied, “I’m just a fan.” I also waved my hand in front of his face to make sure he could see me and he politely laughed. I asked if he was going to be in any movies with Hugh, and he said “I wish! I’m just here on my day off to enjoy some theater.”

The play is called Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes at the Minetta Theater in the Village, if anyone is interested. Also in the audience a row or two ahead of Charlie and us was Billy Crudup and Naomi Watts!

About halfway through the play, a spotlight on the balcony collapsed in the audience. No one was hurt, but they had to stop the play. The stage managers gave Hugh and his costar (Ella Beatty, Warren and Annette Bennig’s daughter) the option of coming off stage while they dealt with it. Hugh chose to stay on stage and did an impromptu Q&A. One audience member asked if he was doing more Wolverine movies, and he started making clawing motions.

I can’t believe I was in the same room as Daredevil and Wolverine.

Got my Lizard today before heading out on vacation. It is surprisingly great. Didn't get a lot of opportunity to pose it, but I have some big plans for photos when I get back. The new limbs, neck thing and head are a vast improvement over the original release. The lower leg articulation on the first on left a lot to be desired.

It's a testament to this figure that for me I got mine over a week ago and he is still sitting on my coffee table and hasn't made his way onto the shelf yet. I only keep the really fun figures out that long.

That's so awesome! Good for you, NORM! That's the one benefit to living in/near NY- you see a lot of big names. My boyfriend is big into concerts and stage-dooring for events, so I've started to kinda like it too. Not the full-on Autograph Chasers, mind you (I can't stand those people and their lack of boundaries). I've graduated from "being too scared to say anything" to "try and act as cool and nonchalant as possible", but I worry most of the time I come across as a bit uncaring (I promise I'm dying inside! 😅 ) I was lucky enough to meet Hugh a couple years ago when he was on one of those morning shows- super quick, but super nice guy. He signed my Logan steelbook. Didn't meet, but sat in the same row as Emma Stone at a Broadway show ages ago. I've had pretty good luck meeting a whole slew of people at stage doors after shows or Q&As. I think my biggest one is getting Steven Spielberg to sign my Jurassic Park steelbook set. That was a madhouse, but worth it.

I think most of us were skeptical of this figure due to the usage of very old parts and the awkward proportions in the torso and that gappy neck piece, but wow, they killed the legs and hips, and the tail isn't bad. The neck piece still looks super-awkward and like he doesn't have shoulders at all, and he looks bad from the back due to the open track the tail moves on. But the tail gap is really a nit-pick since you don't see figures from the back much, and while the neck piece is still quite ugly its functionality is kinda nice.

It's almost impossible to know why he's so good until you get him in hand. Those legs are just great, and you can get really low crouches with him which is exactly how the movie Lizard mostly stood. You'd think the tiny toe-feet he stands on would be hard to keep him balanced, but that's not true at all. And Hasbro has refined their plastic and engineering on joints to be so nicely tight now that getting him to stand on those small feet is relatively simple.

Even though the neck is ugly most everything else looks great. Those new headscupts are just awesome. He's still on my desk as well because he's so fun to pose.

My only real gripes with Lizard are the wonky neck and lack of a bendy tail, but they're small nits in the grand scheme of things. He does have some great shelf presence. It's nice to have something a little more monstrous on the otherwise relatively normal-ish MCU shelf. Hasbro really knocked it out of the park with the No Way Home figures. I know it's not exactly 1:1, but I'm hoping the next wave of D&W figures gets the same love.

Lizard went IMMEDIATELY into my NWH shelf. The hole has been there for years and like Electro, I put him in immediately.

Which means I didn't really play much with him. I almost want to buy another and mess with it and then return it to Amazon because that's easier than pulling this guy back off the shelf.

When you all get figures that complete shelves, do you mess with them for awhile and then complete the shelf, or do you just complete the shelf and exhale?

Still need an Aunt May to finish the set!! They can re-release a better Black & Gold NWH Peter, if they must. He's the only Spidey variant I don't have because that figure was SOOOO bad.

Also, great story Norm! Glad it was a pleasant interaction. And no one got hurt by the light! That's a blessing.
