General Marvel Legends

I'm really on the fence about it, because it's X-Men stuff, and I'm a sucker, but also I stayed strong and didn't get Lilandra or Warlord Charles and if I get this then I gotta go back and get those... she does look rad AF though.
I understand the urge, but the X-Men's space adventures were always my least favorite. I can justify her as a one-off for my X-Men villains shelf. I'm always looking to add another villainess.
So Deathbird will be picked up as well (along with Storm and probably Mystique), wish they had packed someone else with her instead of another Gladiator.
Seriously. I get that Smasher is too niche to anchor a two-pack with Deathbird, but surely we could've done better than Gladiator. How many releases has he had now? Four? Five? He's gotta be the most overrepresented character in Marvel Legends relative to their popularity. Enchantress and Brother Voodoo are the only competition I can think of.

Is Gladiator any more recognizable to the casual fan than Smasher, Raza Longknife, Hepzibah, or Titan? Imagine how much more exciting this set would've been with one of those characters. Or, if you need an X-Man, why not release the Target exclusive Outback Storm with Deathbird?

I'm a big fan of Hasbro's stewardship of the line, but sometimes they leave me scratching my head.

Spider-Man's a popular, A list character. I think we can all agree on that.

I think part of it has to do with Spidey's rogues gallery. He has some of the coolest vllains in the Marvel Universe. Heck, in all of comics. Spider-Man baddies are a lot of fun. The boundless imaginations of Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr have a lot to do with that.

It's nice that a great many of them have been made in Legends. But so many of them have been made that ... now we're down to the likes of Slyde and Hypno Hustler.

The "Non-Stick Super Villain" and "Spider-Man's Grooviest Disco Villain."

I mean ... how deep are we gonna go here?

Don't get me wrong. I love it. Hypno Hustler is from the Bronze Age and Slyde is from the Copper. They go back years. I'm all in for both of them.

But I have to wonder ... how obscure are they willing to go?

Crime Master? Enforcers? Living Brain? Looter? Kangaroo? Grizzly? Big Wheel, for heaven's sake?

And then there's this guy:

"Beware the Basilisk, my son!"

I'm ready for an Iceman. I can't tell is his head sculpt has any of the faceted surfaces I'd want on him, but it was a clever dodge to include ice clip-ons.

That belt's comings off, though. Now sure why they keep insisting he has a big ol' belt.

I get what you're saying, but look at it this way: Gladiator is an opportunity for Dwight and Dan to design a Superman figure.

I can't blame the dudes, really.

Buncha jumbled thoughts catching up:
- Deathbird 2.0 (I guess she'd be 1.0?) will likely come out when they decide to release an unhelmeted Lilandra - maybe even with the Shi'ar Xavier repainted into the cover colors (like they threatened)

I think Deathbird looks fantastic and it will be nice to add a Gladiator to my Animated shelves. But yes to the sculpted boots - SO TIRED of this, Hasbro! The sculpted trunks on him DO really look like Superman.

Iceman was a surprise - a nice one! Interesting none of his press photos show him using his ice blasts - that makes me think they won't work well bc if ShootingtheGalaxy can't make them look good, very few of us can! And I bet he's shipping solo because he fits onto so many teams most people will need two.

I stand corrected on doubting three women would be in one wave without a BAF - that was a very pleasant surprise! Wish it was Yelena, though. :(

Daredevil - it's not the Tracksuit torso - is this guy half new? Also, was Matt blonde in this story?

This is a LOT of two-packs releasing around the same time - Mandarin, Starfox, Deathbird, Punisher, Jean/Cyke/Rogue/Gambit/Storm/Logan, Capcoms plus the rumored Kitty/Colossus and Inhumans - these would have been nice in BAF waves ESPECIALLY when so many of these are anchor characters. Oh shoot, PLUS the two Thunderbolts packs and Masque just releasing.

And Hasbro still can't figure out how to pass along a discount on a two-pack. $57.99 is getting way too high.

At the very least to me it feels weird to have Deathbird without her sister. We'll see where I land on it. I do need to make another cull of my collection soon to make sure it doesn't grow too far past my ability to house it.

On further examination of Iceman the power effects and hands are bugging me.

The icy skid piece has never been a good accessory, and I don’t know how great it really works with the hand blasts, but additionally the choice for open ‘power-casting’ hands is a bad one.

The hands he has been given are very limply gesturing whereas if they had given him the open splayed hands that are given to Spidey figures for wall crawling then it would have looked better, I think the only time they’ve done that was with the Amazing Friends 3pack though.

Given that he is a basic reuse for the most part and it was only power effects that were ever really going to need new tooling if they give him the same Sunfire body, it’s a shame he didn’t get put into a bigger deluxe release like Angel so they could do a proper ice slide.

I’m leaning towards thinking I might let this one pass, especially with the higher price point.

It doesn't change your point, but I think this is the third release for Gladiator. The Thanos Imperative SDCC set and the Apocalypse BAF wave are the other two.

He definitely looks like an improvement. He's on a better body, which is great, and I love the heat vision head. But having a third release of the same look while still missing those simple sculpted details is annoying. I get that the simple Gladiator offset the gorgeous dedicated sculpt for Deathbird, but...it still grates.
