General Marvel Legends

I mean, character looks have evolved over time. How many appearances did she have where the black fur was obvious? There's gotta be a reason for the reinterpretation to white. This has to fall into the same category as Nightcrawler and Beast being blue instead of black.

Honestly my take on it is artists are often too lazy to do much research on a deadline so make half assed assumptions and roll with it. Comic deadlines being what they are there was likely no time - even if thete was inclination - to have it revised. Also, the coloring process for all black is tricky, so easier to color it wjith more white highlight than black... and, as you say, another black furred character whitewashed due to limitations of the coloring process in comics.

Even so, her race hasn't changed ... she IS a Mephitisoid - a name that literally means skunk. Color her how you want.. she is still definitively a skunk lady.

I'm not trying to deny her fictional space species. But all of the appearances of this character that I've seen depict her with white fur. I'd buy a figure of her whether the fur is black or white. But white fur is what I'm most familiar with.

I am not trying to pick a fight or "get back at you" for disliking the '90s Owl look I want, lol. You could have thought the '90s Owl look was the best design in the history of comics, and my opinion here would not change one bit:

I hate everything about that picture with every fiber of my being. The art is awful. The costume is awful. Her hair is awful. The shin fur is awful. I've been around wild skunks & pet skunks, and I've never heard of them growling, either. (But cats growl...😅)

I will happily accept her being a skunk-alien, as long as she looks like a white cat space pirate with long hair.

You know, at the end of the day, I think we should all take a step back and realize how frigging cool it is that we're at a point in this amazing Marvel toy-line where we're arguing about the correct costume for Hepzibah.

... Cockrum look all the way. While the Lee one is technically fine (I've softened on it in literally the past couple days, as I'm trying to accept that if/ when we get her, that's what she'll look like), she'll just look weird on my shelf because my X-Men collection is all 70s/80s looks. But again: we've hit a point where the proper look for Hepzibah is an issue. My phone doesn't even recognize that as a word. I've corrected from "Hezbollah" six times in the process of typing this out.

In defense of Pepe LePew's supposed "rapeyness," the cat only resisted because he was a SKUNK. Because every time HE got paint on HIM, and she thought he was a CAT, SHE chased HIM. She wasn't resisting a sexual predator, she was afraid of stinkiness. That's it! Thank you for coming to my FUDD Talk. *flips table*

(Baby, It's Cold Outside is still kinda sus, though...)

I'm not advocating for an exact representation of her initial appearance. I get Cockrum's art wasn't everyone's cup of tea... and he was really the only arist who dre her for the first 10 years she existed.

But look up Paul Smith's version of that costume from Uncanny 174. She looks great in that original costume.

I also don't want her looking like some generic bimbo the way many of those horrific 90's pin up shots depict her.

I guess we are going to be mortal enemies now 😄

Are you trying to make me cry?

Like, I know you are poking fun. But by looking can you really tell me that this is Hepzibah and not Copycat/Vanessa? If ypu told me that was a picture of copycat I would definitely believe you.

INFINITELY better art, downright BEAUTIFUL on some panels.

I especially love Ch'od's frilled lizard look, lol.

Though Smith definitely needed to tone down the Elon "Sending My Heart Out" gestures a tad...😳

I just really do not like that perma-'70s hair, and it's not a costume design. It's a yellow one-piece bathing suit. I don't like "over-designed" any more than the next person, but it's so boring. Like the condom head Cyclops everyone always jizzes over. Zero creativity, IMO. 🤷‍♂️

And I know of the limitations with printing back then - there was STILL 100% ways to make her or Nightcrawler (AND Beast!?) or Storm's costume (IT'S SILVER; but I prefer white myself, I just like how it looks with her hair) black, but they chose not to, and now we're all driving ourselves & each other crazy lol.

Like I NEVER once thought a character with blue highlights & black shading for their hair had "blue hair" - it was OBVIOUSLY black.

But there is nothing obviously black about her from the neck up (OR STORM'S COSTUME!!! 😝😝😝)... 😅

I read an interesting article about how that song is actually weirdly progressive for its time.
I might have read the same one. About how she has to put up those pretenses of declining so she doesn't seem like a hussy. I absolutely prefer to read it that way. If something is problematic, acknowledge how problematic it is, and try not to repeat the same mistakes. But don't try to make something problematic because you need something to be mad about.

Even in the Paul Smith art, it looks like black pants or leggings. Not fur. The arms look furry, but they also look like white fur!

I don't want her figure to resemble the design TSI posted. That doesn't even look like actual comic art, that looks like amateur pin up art.
