G.I. Joe Classified Series

I actually am the same way, I just realized. Like the end of the Beast one? Where he is recruited for GI Joe? I actually wasn't really excited for that. Mostly because the version of GI Joe they're gonna do isn't for me though.

If you want to mix GI Joe and transformers, just do MASK.

The Energon Universe comics are fun and and a good way of mixing and corralling everything.

That is my vote for how to take it to the screen. The way they interconnect in subtle and overt ways is enough to want to cover all the franchises, but still accessible enough if you just want to mainline one of them.

I think Hollywood is adverse to learning lessons. If something makes money, keep doing it. That's about all they know. Look how terrible the Jurassic movies have become. Zero effort is made to improve the next one. Because they just keep making money.

Oh, I think Hollywood is great at learning lessons. Just... the wrong lessons. They're a lot like toy companies. Toy companies are perpetually infantile idiots when it comes to assessing their own successes and mistakes. Which is why they keep failing to reproduce the former, and constantly reproduce the latter.

Hollywood is much the same. If a nostalgia movie like He-Man does really well, then Hollywood is going to go hard on finding any and every nostalgia property they can get hold of, without any shred of idea of WHY this particular one did so well. Conversely, if the He-Man movie bombs, it could potentially tank the opportunity to even get other nostalgia properties off the ground -regardless of the reason for He-Man bombing.- He-Man could just be a legitimately terrible fucking movie that everyone hates, but Hollywood execs will walk away going 'I guess no one wants movies based on '80s properties anymore.'

. I did watch the cartoon and obviously have a lot of fond memories of it, particularly Shipwreck for some reason. But I guess I don't collect with that part of my nostalgia. The comics were massively impactful while th cartoon was a fun, goofy cartoon in a sea of fun goofy cartoons. So I never fault anyone who leads with the cartoon aesthetic etc, I actually kinda envy those of you who prefer the goofy and weird stuff, but the comic is more what I look to emulate.

Same.
It's a lot like the MOTU fandom. It's pretty heavily divided between cartoon purists, mini-comic purists, and toy purists, with some spattering of people that are somewhere in between. But there's clearly camps of people that, for example, liked the cartoon but just don't collect toys or whatever with the cartoon in mind.

I'm like that with both He-Man and Joe. I liked both cartoons a lot. I have very fond memories of watching both. But when it comes to my modern collecting habits - I tend to collect to emulate how I played with the vintage toys, and to some extent how I engaged with the comics, rather than anything that was going on with the cartoons.
And I'm sure that's because the standards at the time meant that the cartoons for both shows were a lot sillier and tamer than the toys would have led you to believe, or that was visible in the comics/file cards/etc.

I admit I haven't read any of the Energon comics, just about them heh. So I want figures of Chameleon and Mercer, but don't really know much about them as characters. Maybe I'll try to change that. I was able to read some of the IDW stuff, and actually liked some of it actually.

HARD agree.
cartoon purists, mini-comic purists, and toy purists
Man... now I wonder what type of He-Man collector I would be. Probably 'just neat monster villains'. My mom was a massive Frazetta fan as long as I've known her, and I actually wanted He-Man to be more Conany. So I'd probably be as weird about how I collect MOTU as I am everything else.

Based on that, you'd probably be either a toy purist, a mini-comic purist, or someone that sits between the two. Early mini-comics, especially, were very Conan with a bit more magic and a dash of weird technology. And, of course, the vintage toys (especially the first wave+) lent themselves VERY well to a 'Conan' style of play.

In fact, part of what makes me more of a 'vintage toy-focused' collector than a 'Filmation' collector is specifically that, while I enjoyed the cartoon for what it was, I played with those toys in very much a Conan-inspired way. He-Man killed bad guys with his sword, and had actual adventures rather than sitting around near the palace waiting for trouble so he could do the Superman thing. Also, for the most part, I just kind of ditched the very idea of Prince Adam. That was just He-Man in clothes to me.

Heh yeah, I never had Adam or pretended He-man was being Adam. Just a barbarian guy and his friends fighting monster people. But yeah, I loved those mini comics. That would be something I may like to have digitally.

When the first episode of the cartoon premiered, I remember I had to run to the bathroom a moment, then asked my mom what I missed when I got back. She said "Mer-Man came out of the water", which sounded amazing and I decided I needed to tape every episode after that to make sure I didn't miss anything again. I had them, Transformers, and Visionaries of all things. The GIJoe cartoon wasn't something I wanted to collect heh.

Why not grab the actual book Dark Horse put out that compiles all of them? It's awesome. I love it.

As for the cartoon, here's a fun true story: I did, and still do, prefer the Conan the Adventurer cartoon to the He-Man cartoon.

I have a hardcover collection of all those MOTU mini comics. I LOVE the art from the first half dozen issues or so.....forgot the artist's name. Although Adam WAS part of my head canon because my name is Adam and that was pretty cool for 5 year old me.

GI Joe was my introduction to the multiverse and I didn't even know it. Was Cobra Commander a disgruntled used car salesman or a sci-fi citizen of a society of snake people? Yes. The comic was more grounded in reality and went deeper into the mythos. The cartoon offered more time to characters that I loved that Hama never really touched in the comics (Shipwreck, Quick Kick, Flint and Lady Jane). There was room for both in my young life.

Hmm, I shall seek it out.

What's funny is I never even watched that cartoon! And as not true to Howard as the first Arnold movie is, I still love it. Looking back, my mom was pretty cool. Watching cartoons with me AND showing me the Thing, Conan, and Jaws.

I loved the Conan the Adventurer cartoon!

Interesting conversation about GIJoe. My focus was the toys and the cartoon. Colorful characters with special skill sets and unique equipment is what I liked most. The heavily armored and armed Cobra specialists were my favorites, along with the BATs and ninja. Lasers are cooler than bullets.

Vehicles and huge battles are integral to GI Joe. I feel like only a cartoon could recreate the appropriate scale.

No. C'mon. You're joshin' me.

Or the bedroom floor of a sufficiently spoiled child.

Yeah, I mean, the cartoon is definitely not true to Howard's vision. Conan has a magic sword and a magic bird buddy, and travels around with his D&D companions who also have their own special magic weapons. But something about it still hits right. It's... I don't know.. weirdly the 'correct' way to interpret Conan to be appropriate for children, I guess? I just love it. The toys were pretty great too.

So I got the sniper chick in today. Shes a pretty cool figure for being mainly reuse. The ghillie suit looks cool, but I don't know I'd ever use it. I saw a mod earlier somewhere that cut the glasses off the hat for the red head, so I did that too. Looks alot better imo. Something that sucks though is she can't really have the rifle case on her back with the ponytail head. They get in the way of each other. I'm gonna keep the red head on the body, and I have some other bodies I will try for the other head to see what I can do with it. I have a ton of Origins Scarlet figures I found at Ollie's for $5. Maybe I can mess with one of those and do some painting or something. I think I already picked out a name for her, I just hope its not taken. Also hope its not stupid. Natasha "Hawkeye" Barton. The other girl will get a name when I figure out which body to put her on. Again, just hope Hawkeye isn't taken. I've never heard it in Joe land, so here's hoping.

The Walmart Summer Collector Con starts Thursday, 7/24 at 10am Eastern. I don't think anything is confirmed yet, but this is probably when the NF Beach Head/Quick Kick will be available for pre-order.
