G.I. Joe Classified Series

I would love to consume good Joe media - live action or cartoon.

Honestly the closest thing I can think of for a tenplate for modern G.i. Joe movies would be the Expendables franchise.

Non affiliated strike team being brought in to do stuff no country's military is willing to do officially.

Obviously I don't want it to copy those movies exactly... but those films were better than the actual G.I. Joe movies released.

In toy releated news... If I wasn't looking at dropping hundreds on the Snow Cat I would honestly be extremely tempted to spend the dough for Mezco'S RUMBLR vehicle. It looks really good and fun and, since it doesn't wear clothes it eliminates my biggest gripe about Mezco 1:12.

Still, my toy budget isn't set up to afford two $350 vehicles at the same time.

For a live-action Joe tv show, I use Strikeback as an example. Or even 24 and Jack Ryan. Small team of operatives. Mini-arc stories spread throughout season which all tie-into a main storyline. Strikeback is more adult, as it had sex in it, which GIJoe doesn't need. But there was good action. And the stories trotted around the globe. Obviously, you wouldn't get a lot of vehicle on vehicle action in a TV show, due to budget. But you could have things like the VAMP, RAM, and Ferret. Maybe a CLAW which allows a villain to escape.

I think they could make members of GIJoe from other other countries. I'm fine with that approach. And again, I don't nee a Joe film to be mired in real-world military references. But that little touch of it in the 80s comic and filecards gave the whole thing a toe into believablity, even when there are lasers and snake men.

But the Joe movies have been awful for a whole amount of reasons, other than lack of military references. They've lacked any kind of vision. And apparently even Hasbro didn't care to treat their own brand with any kind of respect. I'm open to different interpretations and approaches to the brand, though. I think there were aspects to Sigma 6 which were enjoyable. Renegades was an okay show, but it also drained the fanciful and color out of the whole thing. Wish Hasbro would just try some more animation. Shorts? Something.

Yeah, I think there's different camps in Joe collectors - stronger comics vibes vs. cartoon vibes, really into military accuracy vs. not caring about accuracy, etc
I wanted to bring this back up... This is CLEARLY true, even just here. I did watch the cartoon and obviously have a lot of fond memories of it, particularly Shipwreck for some reason. But I guess I don't collect with that part of my nostalgia. The comics were massively impactful while th cartoon was a fun, goofy cartoon in a sea of fun goofy cartoons. So I never fault anyone who leads with the cartoon aesthetic etc, I actually kinda envy those of you who prefer the goofy and weird stuff, but the comic is more what I look to emulate. At the same time, I don't WANT military accuracy, but I definitely find I'm into it when they go that way. I'm definitely into things like Band of Brothers and I've read Black Hawk Down several times (I even made a spreadsheet, surprise, to keep track of who was where since it follows over a hundred people across the story.) So when they do someone who reminds me of a Delta operator from that era or what have you, I can't resist. Meanwhile, I also want the ninjas.
I respect your decision and just feel bad you'll never have your heart ripped out of your chest and stomped on by the emotional damage of Rebels and Clone Wars etc.
Firstly, it's. It a decision so much. I keep trying. And I did watch, and really appreciated, the last handful of Clone Wars episodes. I watched Rebels until a little after Ahsoka fought Vader, so I really tried. And I did enjoy it, but just fell off. And not because it sucked, it just doesn't draw me in quite as much. And I can't fully explain that since I get emotionally involved with CG Andy Serkis leading an ape revolution.
No joke, I pulled out props to do this calendar but got distracted by taking pics of the Dragonfly with its lights on the other day. Cheeky Zartan will happen.
Heh, distracted by the shiny lights, I get it. But this project won't be hurt by simmering for a little while.
Expendables
I still haven't even tried these, but from what I can tell, seems like a decent comparison.

Trust, I definitely agree broadly that Hama’s writing and personal experience are key factors, and certainly Hama is why I read the comics (and Wolverine comics as well!!), but I think all of that only works *in period*. Vietnam and its fallout are such specific pieces of military history, and I think the Joe story changes fundamentally (and, I would contend, in fundamentally negative ways) when the story is made “general/sliding-timeline military”, especially because it removes the “punch” of the tragedy of characters like Snake-Eyes (and John Rambo, and Frank Castle, and and and) that is tied to the ‘Nam and what came after.
Like a period-piece film that actually came directly at the stories of Vietnam veterans who “re-enlist” on a righteous quest to take down an emergent “greed is good” 80s-style terrorist organization?
Now THAT is fucking interesting.

“U.S. military dudes versus THE ENEMY” not so much, at least to me.

Definitely, and I think the alternate 80s idea is such a great one for this.

I just said YES out loud alone in my office when I read this. It actually works so well as a period story because Cobra really can be greed is good villains. Comics or cartoons, Cobra Commander really is all about them dollah bills. I actually rewatched the MASS Effect mini last night and one of the first things he says to Destro is not to spend his hard-earned stolen millions.

I somehow never watched the Expendables either. Maybe that'll be my next treadmill movie watch since I just finished rewatching all the Predators.

It's really about finding the lighting. Dude-oir is more difficult than you'd expect.

alternate 80s
Oh man, they could really dig into this, and literally hit the “years” of ARAH. Like “G.I. Joe: 1982” is the start, and they could hit fun “Avengers:EMH” highlights like “1987” being their version of the Cobra Civil War, “1992” being like a 90s-psychedelic Ninja Force/ECO-Warriors/DEF fever dream . . . there’s a lot of fun to be had with that, and also cool for ongoing subplots like Extensive Enterprises, ARBCO, Cobra Island’s “independent nation” status, hell the Serpentor conspiracy could be an ongoing background storyline for a really long time, like YEARS. Heck, with a longer-form format, they could even give the Duke stans a little treat and have Scarlett and him do a little dating before she really falls for Snake-Eyes.
And then they could do prequel stuff like “1975” or something where they flash back to Eugen and Anastasia and fill in that background, and even maybe “Cobra: 1979” where we see the Man Who Would Be Commander holding his rallies and slowly building his terrorist cult in a way that of course would absolutely not reflect current events at all.
😇

Yeah, I like this a lot.

I felt the Resolute miniseries was some of the best modern Joe media in a long time. It was adult enough, but still had that fantastical feel to it all. Renegades could have been a great follow up, but they really dumbed it down a lot in comparison.

I actually really liked Renegades. It had this almost melancholy feel to it, and I loved the “average Joes” angle with them being on the run against heavy odds in “regular” America.

And it culminates in the far future of 2005, with the unveiling of a secret project that had the input of former Joe consultants "Spike" and "Sparkplug" Witwicky, Autobot City

Y’know, I’ve never been all that excited about mixing Joe and Transformers. I had some fun with the Marvel comics mashups back in the day, but for the most part I think I’d like to keep those worlds separate. Kinda feel like it diminishes Joe to have them running around a world where giant transforming robots are regularly wreaking havoc.
Also while I LOVED Transformers ONE, the Bayformers films have really knocked TF off my pedestal of interest for my adult life. I still love all the classic cartoons though, the Movie is still amazing all these years later.
