G.I. Joe Classified Series

when I was young and only knew Chuckles from the movie, I thought he was that dope silent strong dude that threw a missile at a tank.

now that I'm old I think of him as Jim Rockford/Thomas Magnum but in GI Joe

Oh! I never had Outback but I'm holding out for a Night Force version. Storm Shadow is actually... I wanna say my favorite, for the reasons Doc mentioned already. Snake Eyes is bad ass, but so is Storm Shadow, and both have very tragic backstories, intertwined, and both are seriously standup guys for their friends. The Snake Eyes Origin is one of my favorite stories in comics ever, period. Storm Shadow breaking into the Joe base simply to tell Snake Eyes, "I found out, it was Zartan," for Snake Eyes to drop everything and go with him to Cobra Island to give the master of disguise whatfer is just AWESOME. Yes, when they put out that figure and I noticed he wasn't Cobra anymore, I was beside myself. They put the tattoo on him! And this costume is even cooler!

I played differently than y'all. I don't think I ever had a core team. It was all "We're headed to the jungle today so who has green camo." Or "We're blowing up tanks today so who shoots missiles." Snake Eyes was generally off on his own.

I don't think it's mutually exclusive to have favorites, have a favorite core team, and have specialist teams.

Like, my current Joe shelf is kind of arranged by specialist teams, not a core group of my favorite Joes. I think of it as specialist teams are 'who's going into the swamp to bring in Croc Master?' And the core 'favorite' team is 'who are your picks to just straight-up assault Cobra Island?'

are the Joe fans really that dedicated to the core key characters the way X-Men fans are?
Snake-Eyes is one of my favorite fictional characters of *all time*, not just in context of ARAH. I have absolutely zero interest in a Joe team without him (or certain other characters, but mostly him). I have less than zero interest in anyone else cosplaying Snake-Eyes in-universe. I feel the same about Cobra Commander and much of the Cobra top brass. The characters are the point.

I am a couple of years younger than you, which makes this so interesting. Because I'm pretty far away from anything I'd call a perfect Joe team, let alone a full list of the ones I want most. I'm a v2 Sci-Fi, v2 Low-Light, v3(?) Stalker kind of guy. I need Spearhead and Ice Cream Soldier and shit. My best-favorite version of the Joes are very late '80s into the early '90s.
I think you just nailed the very niche age difference thing with the Joes line specifically. Cos Neon Green v1 Sci-Fi is an all-time favorite. The Low-Light we have now - perfect to me. OG Stalker absolute fave (though admittedly OG was lost and so tundra Stalker took over as a fave for a long long time... I'm dying to get puffer coat Stalker soon.) Spearhead is our overlap, probably because of his release year.

But I'm also the right age that while I had the O13 or some of them they did not survive long enough for me to get attached to them, so like, General Hawk is my favorite Hawk. Loved two-gatling-guns Roadblock cos OG was long, long, loooong gone. I was super picky about Scarlett cos I lost her and never had another one.

Somehow, probably because he was white and stood out on the carpet, OG Storm Shadow lived the longest from my oldest figures. I have a real soft spot for his original look just cos that figure lived a good life.

I'm just the right age that the cartoon vs. the file card baffled me. "Why doesn't he talk when the guy I have at home loves talking to everyone?" THe Thomas Magnum thing is why I love him. He'll always be a favorite. I didn't hate the cartoon version but that was just some other guy in a Hawaiian shirt.

I played VERY weird. I was in an arts program in elementary school that was supposed to be I guess gifted and talented adjacent and one of the projects they had us working on was building an underwater city. I ended up using either MASK or Joes to inhabit the city, everyone had a story, and the teacher looks me dead in the eyes with an expression I'll never forget and said "You'd do this at home all by yourself, wouldn't you." This kid was always off with the faeries so to speak.

I feel kinda the same, but I did really enjoy the IDW stuff with cult leader Serpentor, creepy Crystal Ball, and CC getting killed by Chuckles then the high command making a contest for who would take over the position. In an elseworlds kinda way. Which I guess is how I see the comic versus the cartoon anyway.

I feel like there's a breaking the fourth wall opportunity there where blonde, comics accurate Hawk looks directly at the reader as Duke shows up and says "I'm standing RIGHT HERE, Larry! WTF!"

I dug that story too, but the Cobra Commander “rotation” elements keep it from being a favorite. I totally get why they did it and it is absolutely a cool swerve, but it’s like in that shitty Dracula 2000 movie when they’re like “suprise Dracula is actually Judas Iscariot” and I just had to nope because they literally tossed out the original character I love so I no longer care about that story.
I cannot stress enough how important characters are to me: they are way more important to me than the stories themselves.

But like as action figures? All bets are off. I’m in for cool toys, do not care how they “fit in” to the story.
But they best keep making Snake-Eyes and Cobra Commander figures.

I also like how they wanted to kill Duke the chickened out after seeing how hard kids too Optimus Prime's death. But I'm sorry, Duke is NOT Optimus Prime by any measure.

For some reason, I don't hate any of the Cobra Commander weird revisionist history backstories, to the point where I look at him like the Joes universe Loki. How is this gaslighting madman screwing up our world THIS time? Meanwhile in every universe to me Snake Eyes is the same. It's like they're the yin and yang of my Joes head canon/collecting habits. Every weird ass Cobra Commander story is valid. But Snake Eyes always burns his face in a helicopter crash, loves Scarlett, and learns to Ninja from Storm Shadow's family. He's an anchor being, Cobra Commander is a chaos factor.

I mourned TWICE for Prime: once after the movie, and then I had a fucking MELTDOWN when he came back but was essentially a Quintesson-controlled zombie and sacrificed himself (they showed half his face get blown off!! Holy shit!!!!). I put up a memorial in my closet. I celebrated for WEEKS when he truly came back during the hate-plague and kicked Rodimus’ infected ass and they played YOU GOT THE TOUCH!!
Duke? I was like “come on, he’s obviously dead, at least give me SOMETHING in this shitty movie other than the awesome opening”. I was *savage* about Duke as a little kid. Hated him from the first frames of MASS Device. “Didn’t you read my file??: MAN OF ACTION.” Fuck off, Duke.

Costs suck, I'm sorry.

(Just more Tenime rambling few care about lol)
My lineup is:
Zartan
Zarana
Zandar
Buzzer
Cheshire (Valaverse Action Force leather jacket Pandora)
Chopper (Cold Slither Buzzer, repurposed as Buzzer's brother)
Gnawgahyde
Icepick (McFarlane Toys Danger Girl Natalia Kassle - she keeps her real name, I just gave her the "codename")
Killmonger (the Marvel Legends "What If?" figure)
Ripper
Road Pig
Rooster (kitbash of MCU Marvel Legends Ravager Thor with X-Men BAF Bonebreaker's head - he's got pics & a workup in the "Fan Canon" thread)
Bloodstorm & Mohawk, The Silent Twins (ML Outback Storm from the Apocalypse wave & Bloodstorm from the Strange Tales/Blackheart wave - named Jennifer & June Gibbons - Google "The Silent Twins, Jennifer & June Gibbons" - it's a creepy real-life story lol)
Torch
Typhoid Mary (the Marvel Legends figure lol)

...and then Monkeywrench is still in his box, because I wanna do a review for my YouTube channel.

I also gave some real names to some of the existing characters who either didn't have any, or didn't have complete names lol. Like, I made "Zartan" the family name that the siblings share, and each one has a different first & middle name, all starting with "Z" lol.

My 25th Anniversary/PoC/etc. 1:18 Dreads had some additional members, (mohawk Storm being one), one being Racetrack Whiplash from Iron Man 2, so I'm even more impatient for them to make a 6" one of him, so I can double-dip & cross-pollinate, lolol.

any photos of how well the danger gil figure fits in? I loved the GI Joe Danger Girl crossover
