G.I. Joe Classified Series

That's very close to my list. I might go with Lowlight over Falcon, although Falcon would probably make Top 10 3.75" figures. Outback would be a strong contender, especially if I could combine his two Classified figures to make a white shirt version with the face printing and skin tones from Cobra Island.
Nice. Lowlight is one of those I never had but always wanted. If I could fit ten people on that little shelf... okay, if I could fit thirteen people on that little shelf, I would add Lowlight, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, and Hawk. heh, THAT is my 13.

And honestly that's sort of how I like it. I feel like if I dipped any more into the official lore I'd start getting headaches.

To be honest, I DO know a fair bit of the lore and I'm still mostly a vibes-based collector as well. I mean, vibes and nostalgia. But even my nostalgia is vibes, because as a kid I was really big on doing whatever the fuck I wanted with my toys. Like, and a lot of people do this, turning troop builders into single specialists because mom and dad were absolutely not down for buying me the same action figure six times. But I definitely extent it beyond that.

My Storm Shadow is never a bad guy. I don't even like the design of original Cobra Stormie. And never had the toy as a kid (I DID have the ninja viper so please make that Hasbro). I'm somewhat aware of the personalities the characters have in the comics or cartoon, but I also never really -cared- about that in my own collection as a kid, and I certainly don't care now.

As someone actively working on a fun little creative project for myself taking old file card and comics lore and building an alternate timeline, I really do think your mileage may vary for how much Joes fans give a shit about legacy characters or classics or whatever. Did you come into it from the beginning? Are you an ancient who had the dress up dolls? Were you a comics guy or a cartoon guy or both? Did you read the stuff that came after the comic left Marvel? Did you hit an age where you stopped collecting toys around the time Joes went late 80s day-glow colors? Or was that when you STARTED collecting? Are you in it for the starry-eyed, optimistic version of the military? or for the NINJAS? Both?

This is really the only place I've EVER discussed my opinions or interests in the IP with anyone else (HISSTank scares me) so I don't know how aggressive or dickish people can be about it, but even the difference between me and my two brothers (We're each exactly six years apart (48/42/36 years old now) have super different tastes. Baby bro is all about them ninjas. Middle bro loves the brightly colored shenanigans. I was able to tell Ru the exact YEAR I stopped paying attention to file cards, which is where my own heart lies with this line - those file cards are my personal joes bible. But I also won't hold preferring a different era against anyone else.

And hell, I even pick up figures from those other eras cos Classified is killing it. I only barely remembered Slice & Dice and Budo and those are probably my figures of the year. (Unless the Sci-Fi et al wave hits before January 1, cos those three guys were legends in my collection.)

But I mean, this is a tale as old as time. I remember "Which one is GI Joe?" from my dad; me thinking Snake Eyes is the main character; and cartoon fans knowing Duke is the lead. It's always been a matter of perspective.
one of he most amusing things to me is how duke is the 'lead' in he show, and larry hama had no time for duke in the comics.

Despite my Arashikage tattoo, and collection of "All Storm Shadows," I'd be lying if I said I wasn't Team Dreadnok.

They're the one faction I've added to the most with non-Joe figures.
I always thought the Dreadnoks were off-putting as a kid, and now they're my favorite. I think I long for free-wheeling ignorant anarchy instead of the reality we're living in.
Solid team. And to the point; I think it's interesting that if you asked a different Joe fan to make up a team of 8 or 9 Joes, it would not be those exact characters. I wonder, if Classified did a perfect version of every variation of every Joe character... would your team change? Is it based mostly on 'well, this is what's available' or did you luck out and those are legitimately the characters you would choose every time to form up the 'best Joe team?'
Damned near close to my core team. Although I think I have two very separate lists: am I building seven or nine characters as a team for a STORY, or am I building a shelf with my seven or nine favorite characters in a vacuum. Like, Shipwreck is an eternal favorite, but that dude doesn't really fit on any actual functional teams for me. Chuckles is a favorite but he's never on a team, he's on his own.

Funny thing is once they started doing the retro line they really did start to make "I could one and done this character" versions of most of the characters I loved as a kid, so building that team would be tough. Counting the upcoming / pipeline stuff, I'm really only a half-dozen or so away from having my dream list. Including early versions of characters I either lost or never had as a kid (I never got to have a Doc so Classified Doc is one of my absolute favorites.)

I'll take some responsibility there. I was open to some of the changes, but a lot of it was just bad design. That original Scarlett was fucking HIDEOUS.
It's funny, I put Wave 1 Scarlett away pretty much permanently once I got the Retro version, but I pulled her back out recently and I think now that I have the Scarlett I wanted all along, I find her charming in an over-designed, ridiculous kind of way. Same with Duke.

And Storm Shadow is never a villain for me either. He's an occasional antagonist but the piece of his story that is permanently locked in my brain is here's a guy who brought a broken man into his family, was framed for a heinous crime against his own family, and then saw his friend take his place in his family. That's break anyone and the fact that he'll still switch sides to stick by his friend makes him one of the more interesting characters they have, lore-wise.

Also man, thinking about how important lore is to the characters - Larry wrote everyone except the ninjas very much as ciphers. You could layer your own story onto almost every single other Joe and base it on his six or eight lines on a file card. That's some efficient characterization and perfect for a toy line where you want the kids to make up their own stories.

I'm trying to think of another toy line I had as a kid that even had troop builders (besides Star Wars). I guess the Foot Clan for TMNT?

Either way I definitely did the same thing. Even the troopers were specialists and specific guys in my headcannon.

This will always be the hilarious great divides for me between the two (and I love the comics and the 'toon). Shoehorning Duke in because that's who they thought they needed (especially when Hawk was right there if they REALLY need a blonde male leader!) is never not going to be funny to me.

I love baddie Storm Shadow, so he's always on the Cobra side in my set-up, even though I know thats not comic canon (for the most part).

I told myself i was gonna be very picky and only get the figures of women, but then I saw Bazooka, and I love that big lug, and Tunnel Rat's always been a fave, so those were the first boy figs I got on the Joe side.

I still don't even have a Snake-Eyes yet cause I'm like, holding out for the ideal version for me, and I don't even know what that is anymore. I did the metal visor slats, i know that.

but like, Duke, Flint, and Hawk? I have no interest

God the Dreadnoks are my fave, and right now I only have the trio of Zatan, Zarana, and my beloved Zandar.

I keep waffling on the others, just cause of costs.

edit: oh wait, I have Road Pig, lol

Might I persuade you to join Team V3?

I kinda wonder if we'll get that version using the base body from V4 with the existing visored head. I'm honestly surprised we don't have a bodysuit and visor version of him yet.

Costs suck, I'm sorry.

(Just more Tenime rambling few care about lol)
My lineup is:
Zartan
Zarana
Zandar
Buzzer
Cheshire (Valaverse Action Force leather jacket Pandora)
Chopper (Cold Slither Buzzer, repurposed as Buzzer's brother)
Gnawgahyde
Icepick (McFarlane Toys Danger Girl Natalia Kassle - she keeps her real name, I just gave her the "codename")
Killmonger (the Marvel Legends "What If?" figure)
Ripper
Road Pig
Rooster (kitbash of MCU Marvel Legends Ravager Thor with X-Men BAF Bonebreaker's head - he's got pics & a workup in the "Fan Canon" thread)
Bloodstorm & Mohawk, The Silent Twins (ML Outback Storm from the Apocalypse wave & Bloodstorm from the Strange Tales/Blackheart wave - named Jennifer & June Gibbons - Google "The Silent Twins, Jennifer & June Gibbons" - it's a creepy real-life story lol)
Torch
Typhoid Mary (the Marvel Legends figure lol)

...and then Monkeywrench is still in his box, because I wanna do a review for my YouTube channel.

I also gave some real names to some of the existing characters who either didn't have any, or didn't have complete names lol. Like, I made "Zartan" the family name that the siblings share, and each one has a different first & middle name, all starting with "Z" lol.

My 25th Anniversary/PoC/etc. 1:18 Dreads had some additional members, (mohawk Storm being one), one being Racetrack Whiplash from Iron Man 2, so I'm even more impatient for them to make a 6" one of him, so I can double-dip & cross-pollinate, lolol.

Like, Shipwreck is an eternal favorite, but that dude doesn't really fit on any actual functional teams for me. Chuckles is a favorite but he's never on a team, he's on his own.
I feel like regular Ship only works as a support role character. BUT, there were some later versions of Ship where he sells the specialist operator look a lot better and that can work. But honestly, my ideal spot for Ship is to hang out on the Flagg. I think Chuckles works as part of a team, but just not with the team. He's advanced recon. He's calling targets and providing intel. But I always viewed it like he was doing that for a specific operations team, not for all of G.I. Joe.

You know, they sit Breaker, Low-Light, Heavy Duty, and Outback down and are like 'okay.... so we need to deal with this situation in South America before it gets worse.' And they're like 'yeah, okay..' 'No.. wait... there's more. We need Chuckles on this.' And everyone is just rolling their eyes and putting their heads back like 'ugh, this fuckin' guy....' becuase they know he can get the job done but is also a pain in the ass.

I am a couple of years younger than you, which makes this so interesting. Because I'm pretty far away from anything I'd call a perfect Joe team, let alone a full list of the ones I want most. I'm a v2 Sci-Fi, v2 Low-Light, v3(?) Stalker kind of guy. I need Spearhead and Ice Cream Soldier and shit. My best-favorite version of the Joes are very late '80s into the early '90s.

Also man, thinking about how important lore is to the characters - Larry wrote everyone except the ninjas very much as ciphers. You could layer your own story onto almost every single other Joe and base it on his six or eight lines on a file card. No denying that Hama is crazy talented and, at least in the '80s and '90s, really knew what he was doing here. There was a design philosophy that he made and stuck with and it worked so well.
Speaking on Storm Shadow - he is legitimately my favorite character in the Joe lore. Woe to me because my favorite version of him is Ninja Force and Classified did that figure so dirty that it still counts as my greatest toy-related 'worst thing to ever happen to me.' I've begged and begged for a redo- but I don't think it's going to happen at this point.

I'm trying to think of another toy line I had as a kid that even had troop builders (besides Star Wars). I guess the Foot Clan for TMNT?
Yeah, Foot Soldiers were army builders for sure. I also never had more than one of those. Putties for Power Rangers, I guess. But I don't think Putties even got action figures until a fair bit later. Theoretically, the 5" Marvel stuff had army builders as well, like Sentinels. But good luck with that.

I love baddie Storm Shadow, so he's always on the Cobra side in my set-up, even though I know thats not comic canon (for the most part).
I don't like SS as a bad guy, but I do really like some of his later bad guy costumes. Genuinely love the look of that one costume he has where the Cobra symbol covers his face. They made a great 25A figure out of that look. I just used it as a different ninja, ala Ninja Force.

I still don't even have a Snake-Eyes yet cause I'm like, holding out for the ideal version for me, and I don't even know what that is anymore. I did the metal visor slats, i know that.

I'm a big SE fan and there's several versions of SE that I want. But I don't know what my IDEAL Snake is. I used to think it was probably v3. Now I think it might actually be a properly-articulated Ninja Force SE. BUT... I have a super super soft spot for that 'knight visor.' So I don't know, either.

god, Pandora fits so well, I love her. Found her randomly at a con in my own hometown and became obsessed with some of those figs.

Typhoid Mary is such a good idea!
