G.I. Joe Classified Series

See, I can explain a lot of my Joe preferences as being the result of being a martial arts kid, who also did a lot more play with Joes without their guns than with. Hey, the guns get lost if you carry them around places, so it was figures (and maybe swords) only when I took figures with me to play around with. Finding out Firefly did martial arts was a huge “HELL YEAH!” moment for me. A lot of my personal hierarchy for Joes involved who I thought was best at hand-to-hand fighting. Heck, most of my favorite superheroes are also known for their hand-to-hand fighting prowess rather than “powers”. Ninja Force probably would have been my favorite subline if not for the action features and (sometimes) unserious designs. Of course, nostalgia makes most of those designs awesome now, and I remember at the time even thinking that Slice and Dice in particular were awesome badasses.

Q. Did anyone else switch Retro Firefly and Retro Beach Head's SMGs or was it just me?

Okay, so the Dreadnoks. Yeah, they're goofy but they're relatable, fun goofy so I don't mind them the way things like Raptor, Crystal Ball, or Cobra La irk me. Torch was never released here so I only had Ripper and Buzzer to start with, followed by Monkeywrench, Thrasher, Road Pig, and Zanzibar down the line. I had the car, the skiff and the ridiculous motorbike with a rear turret and loved the lot, probably more so than most of the later Cobra vehicles.

As to Cobra's general disposition, I felt like CoCo could well be all in on being a neo-fash scumbag (the Freds all being perfect blond, blue eyed boys felt very HMMMM) but crucially he surrounded himself with people who couldn't give a shit about any of that and who were purely focused on the money and mad science side of things (Destro, Tomax & Xamot, Firefly, Zartan and pals, Mindbender). The Baroness was one I've sometimes struggled to pin down, from what I recall of her bio it sounded more like well to do heiress goes Baader-Meinhof, so teaming up with a guy like CoCo makes little sense...until you consider she's basically trying to do a Starscream (wasn't it her plan to have Billy try to kill his old man?) and seize the reins herself/manipulate whoever has them.

Other guys like Bludd, Scrap Iron, Wild Weasel, they just seem to be in it for the thrills and the paycheck.

I dunno, maybe I'm kidding myself but overall, I feel like Cobra are bad but not 'ick' bad compared to your Hydras and what not.

I think *some* Cobras are “ick” bad, but more in the “HOLY SHIT SAW-Viper whyyyyy did you just shoot all those Joes, you maniac!!” sense where some of them are just down-low psychopaths and that comes out every once in a while. Like Firefly is totally one of those: he’d do a mass-murder and just *shrug*. And like guys like Croc Master and Crystal Ball aren’t crazy in the “eccentric” sense but in the “yeah . . . you really REALLY don’t want to be left alone in a room with them” sense. And then like Cesspool is a straight-up genocidal maniac, and Headman totally sells drugs to kids.
But like the Cobra ethos is totally “I want money and power and control” and definitely not like Epstein shit.

Right, I agree with all this. Though I have it in the back of my mind for one Cobra to be a former proud boy or the like. But even a lot of the vipers are still like "ah Christ" when he starts sharing thoughts.

Speaking of thoughts on Dreadnoks, has anyone else listened to the Cold Slither album? I’m really digging it and it really feels written by a fan familiar with the lore. It really emphasizes they are separate from Cobra but fight where the money is.

It was like toy hunt dreams I used to frequently have where you walk in and find everything you have been looking for, all at once. Picked up some Marvel stuff too. FYI this was a Walmart that didn't previously sell GI Joe and the display is on a small shelf section in the drive aisle between toys and whatever the department across from it is.

I listened to the whole thing on Spotify driving around between jobsites shortly after it came out. I actually really like it. It's a solid fuckin' rock album, which is more than I can say for the releases of a lot of better-known rock bands these days. I even added one or two songs to my 'Liked' playlist.

So ToySnowman put up the Rattler today (I think today) and I'm honestly kind of grossed out. The Rattler, with shipping, was about 520-600 CAD, to estimate a bit high. TS wants a thousand dollars for it. Just... ick. I fucking hate seeing stores that ostensibly are 'part of the community' so blatantly try to abuse the community in this way. Do you really need a 300+ dollar profit on this one item?

Found Crystal Ball, Night Force Beach Head, the firefighters, and the retro Cobra Troopers on the mythical center aisle display at Walmart tonight. I cancelled my preorders before I even left the store.
It's very satisfying, but I wait until after checkout.
