G.I. Joe Classified One-A-Day Beamish-Style Figure Poll - #122 - Night Creeper (EA Concept Art)

"redesigns by guys who grew up worshipping first-generation Image comics."
Being a young teenager when all that came out, we thought that was the coolest shit and how lame characters like Captain America and Superman looked in comparison. My goodness, those designs did not age well at all and it's a reminder of why the classics are classics. The only rationale I can think of as to why we all those it was so cool was just because it was different and stood out. But after awhile you realize you don't need 70 pouches and belts that don't hold up anything on a costume and you wouldn't mind seeing a characters feet every so often.

Wow. Passes all around today. While I like at least one foot in the real world, many of those looks are too grounded. The classic ‘noks walked the line between realism, and colorful pretty well. Their colorful personalities helped. These redesigns fall short.

Heheheheh was that age as well, and I absolutely could *not* with Image-inspired designs AT ALL. Cap and Superman looked AMAZING to tween/teen me compared to literally anything Lee, McFarlane and co were throwing out. Even Spawn, who I loved at the time, I wished had a less “Image”-busy costume. I was 100% the target demographic, and mostly I just remember thinking “fuck, and now they’ve splattered all those pouches and open-hair head condoms on the X-Men, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”
🤷‍♂️

Feels like the closest you got to a yes on some of these.

Well, that concludes the hell that was Dreadnok week and a half, thank you for your patience. We won't do that again.
I think it was a worthwhile and honorable experiment and I applaud your effort. I just think the comic books from that era tried a little too hard to leave their mark. Really, Classified would get me for redesigns on pretty much any Dreadnok, but just didn't love what those artists did at the time.

I was a teenager at the time too and I never had the "this is cool/this is lame" vibe but I did have a phase of putting too many pouches and too many head condoms on the characters I was trying to create. I actually tried to honor this a bit in my book series by having a character people refer to as "your costume looks like comics threw up on you." But it was a simpler time, when we could make simpler mistakes. (I actually loved when Bryan Hitch took over the Stormwatch art and kind of streamlined and toned everything down without throwing away the underlying concepts.

Yeah, some Image stuff really benefited when their creators stepped out of the way. I feel like Maxx is an exception, but Liefeld more than balances that out.

Now I can't unsee the comparison.

It's funny, I always mention how I found the 'noks gross and off-putting as a kid but love them now as "fuck society" lunkheads, and a lot of my "nopes" in here were more "meh, not interesting enough" on the designs, but Storm Rider really does feel like instead of being a dopey anarchic biker (which I have grown to love as a concept) he looks more like a weekend warrior off-duty cop. Even someone like Rugrat I could see playing the Half-Sack role in the gang, but Storm Rider has Narc vibes. :)

Day 121a - Beachhead - (EA Concept Art) (1/11/26)

Alright, new week and a new theme. Kinda a weird one, but I happened upon some concept art for a video game that didn't happen set around the live action movies. First we have Beachhead, whom I know some of us can't get enough of! What would be fun is if they finally included an unmasked head.

Okay, a liiiiittle more sci-fi than I usually like for Joes, but honors his original design, isn't bonkers or sloppy, pretty clean lines and concept. I"d buy that. It FEELS like Beachhead but brings something new to the table.
