Extremis Iron Man and Mandarin Two-Pack

Yeah this updated iron man has encouraged me to reread the entire era that Tony wore this suit, including all of the major associated events that Bendis was pushing during that period. I might even read through Mike Grell’s stint on Iron man to help serve as a prologue, since that was the time when the Super Hero Registration Act was drafted.

Going all the way back to Grell is ambitious.

Compared to reading the entirety of civil war and Secret Invasion, not nearly so. Besides it’s a good preamble into the more “modern” iron man stories

I mean I could go back all the way to the Busiek days but some of those stories could be a little convoluted and I don’t want to go running in circles

Peronally feel like Busiek's 25 issues were very very strong.. In fact, it remains to this day one of the better post relaunch runs. It's after that starting with Quesda that I think that volume really falls off. John Jackson Miller and Jorge Lucas do some solid work toward the end there with the SecDef stuff. I personally don't think going back to Grell is going to reward the re-read much. I suppose the Mandarin's son stuff gets referenced in Director of SHIELD briefly, but I'm not sure there's a lot else that feels foundational to anything that comes from that era. Extremis is the natural starting point IMO.

Looking at Extremis pictures on Resilient's Instagram, it's almost insulting how much better this Extremis figure is than the last one.
My wife also doesn’t see any other character those veiny claw-nailed hands could possibly have been sculpted for other than classic Dracula, and I agree with her.
She lives in your house; she's clearly brainwashed.

What’s even more embarrassing is that it took three separate attempts to finally nail the look of both the armor and the articulation between 2011 and the present day. It’s almost inexcusable if not for the fact that at least Tony has worn this armor time and again between 2015 and the present day in the comics and video games so the costume is still relevant to some degree. It doesn’t feel as “Vintage” of an armor as it probably should. Had it just up and disappeared nearly 15 years ago during the fraction run. (Like we assumed it did for a time) I’d think we’d all be singing a different tune. So at least we got the perfect Extremis armor action figure at a time when comic creators still see it as a viable modern day armor.

I feel the same. The figures came out close enough together that i can't help be feel like this was done purposefully. Hasbro, and just about everyone else reading comics or collecting Legends knows, this is THE definitive armor of the modern comics era. Frankly, the original release wasn't even a passable release. It's was a straight up bad figure due to it's limited torso articulation, from only a couple years ago, the only real redeeming feature of it being it's deco that emulated Granov's cover art pretty damn well. This new one is just capable of SO MUCH more. I'll share the crunch comparison for everyone here so you guys get the sense of what I'm talking about here. And the crazy part is the ab crunch on mine doesn't stop here because it can't go further, but rather because the joint feels like it's stuck. There's room for this crunch to essentially fold him in half.

Prior to this figure’s release I was convinced that the definitive Extremis Armor Iron man was inevitably going to be produced by Hot Toys, since they usually have the last word on collectibles with premium detailing. But now that Hasbro has given us this redux I no longer give a crap if Hot Toys comes out with their own version or not.

I hope for the sake of my wallet that Hot Toys never does it. I would eat that and the Granov Pentagon armor the fuck up.

I’m just waiting for someone to come up with the best body to swap that young Mandarin head and ringed fists onto. The suited body is fine, but not Mandarin.

The Issue there, for me, is that head sculpt is SUPER specific though. It just doesn't feel like a classic or 90s Mandarin to me. The ringed fists are wonderful to have in the back pocket though. I've sculpted rings on hands on a few Mandarin customs now to varying to degrees of success.

I've seen some swaps onto the Multiverse of Madness Mordo body and it looks decent (you'd have to paint the neck). I think it does capture a Mandarin-esque vibe and it's in green out of the package.. I don't necessarily know that there's a body that will be better suited for a Mandarin with no or minimal work. Most recently I used a MCU Wen Wu with some swapped MoM Dr Strange arms and legs and repainted him.

It really depends on the era you want to capture I suppose. You could maybe take a Red Skull body and throw the robe/arms from the IM 3 Trevor Slattery figure to get something that feels like a mix of Tales of Suspense Era mixed in with some 90s robe era? Colors would be all over the place without paint though.

Yup me too. And I’d have to search high and low for that Iron Spider figure that they made years back.
