Diamond Select Toys is Shutting Down

Is anyone able to explain how pre-orders work for ee and bbts? I'm curious because I just noticed that there are DST items marked 'Pre-Order Sold Out' or 'Pre-Sold Out' while other DST items are still available to pre-order. I assume that each etailer has pre-orders open for a set amount of time for each item, and then they submit their order quantity to the toy manufacturer based on the number of pre-orders plus some extra. Is that right? If so, do the etailers pay any amount up front?

I assume that ee and bbts have already submitted their orders for all the items marked as pre-sold out and may have already paid DST some amount. Since DST hasn't sent them a refund, they're assuming the items will arrive. Considering Ad Populum has apparently been pretty uncommunicative across the board, I wouldn't be surprised if that order update/refund has been MIA. I wonder if ee and bbts have submitted their orders for the items that went on pre-order more recently.

Again, I appreciate anyone who has the patience to read through my rambling thoughts about a dead company and share their knowledge and insights. Please let me know if my understanding of things is way off.

I've still never gotten an answer on this part: with diamond gone, which means previews is gone, what about all these figures that are previews exclusive that are hanging out.

Hiya has a few. Bossfight had a Sonja.

I made inquiries and both companies did not respond.

I've been wondering that as well, since the Sentinel Ronin Warriors line I collect was listed as a Previews exclusive in the US. I think I saw Hiya put out a notice that they'd be handling distribution directly, I'm guessing the other companies affected are just scrambling to find another way to get those products shipped out.

Yeah, I have the Previews Hiya Godzilla on preorder at BBTS and hope Hiya gets it to them sooner or later.

Just got the DST cancellations from EE as well. I guess today was the day that someone finally decided to tell retailers what the hell is going on.
I am really bummed that DST is gone, I didn't realize how much of my collection came from them until after they went away. I just recently moved my Stargate figures around to make room for another Muppets shelf (Sesame Street + Fraggles), and my Buffy collection is in the next case over. They were never the best, but they did a lot of cool stuff for a lot of licenses that I cared about.

P.S. I really do hope NECA does the Muppets (Palisades style), but they need to pick up the pace with Sesame Street first.

Hiya sent out a newsletter to their customers about a week ago that said they will be handling all of the US bound orders directly from this point forward. This will certainly lower prices because there is no middle man that places like BBTS had to deal with

Let's not jump to conclusions.

I finally gave up on the MS Annihilus last month.

Man, what the hell was DST doing in that last 18 months? They had several figures in production for like a year.

I assume they didn't have funds to make steel molds for new figures. My understanding is that is the biggest single cost in production. It's curious which figures were prioritized over the last couple of years and which ones sat in production limbo. I would have thought Annihilus pre-orders were high enough to make that figure a priority. I guess the return on investment calculations were still not good enough to justify the cost of moving into production. Maybe it would have required extra steel molds.

Kind of seems like, generally speaking, if DST was making money then they'd still be in business. So, if I had to guess, I'd say none of the figures were really justifying their own existence on a financial spreadsheet.

I used to work in frozen foods and that was the most expensive part of chicken nuggets lol.

Edit: also why I think you see so much reuse from companies
