DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

I finally saw Superman. It was good. There was a lot to like about it for sure. Corenswet did a great job and I think the script was strong for sure. A lot of good performances all over the place. I would totally go for a Guy Gardner movie because they kinda held back with him. But my one complaint is kinda a big one for me at least, the music. I get the Williams theme is iconic and tied to the character and that's perfectly fine, but not only did they do their own kinds arrangement but they kept only the beginning of it until toward the end when they finally let it resolve. And I get why they did it that way, and it should be a great theme with where he is as a character and all that, but it kept bugging me everytime they brought up just the first few notes. So I guess I would prefer they either do their own theme or just go for it with the Williams one. We know the theme really well, don't be coy.

That might be my favorite piece of Williams' music, and as you all know, that's saying something.
I got to see him conduct a few times over the years at his concerts in Tanglewood and the Kennedy Center. I don't remember exactly if the Superman theme was one of the ones he did (by that point, he'd sometimes split conducting duties because of his age), but the crowd definitely went wild when it came on. I did, however, get to see him conduct the Jurassic Park theme, and I may or may not have gotten teary-eyed the first time. 😅

I know I probably sound like the Press Secretary of Vampire Affairs at this point, but Williams’ score for John Badham’s 1979 Dracula film with Frank Langella and Sir Lawrence Olivier is an underheard masterpiece. I don’t know if it’s the *best* Williams piece, but it’s certainly a contender.

I thought the same thing when I saw your post in the One a Day thread yesterday. "How ridiculously on brand."

Also watched Superman. The cast are fine, the leads are great, there were aspects I really enjoyed, especially loved Terrific and Guy...

But. I thought it was dire in cinematography terms, boringly framed, over-lit and flat and ugly, it was a real struggle to keep engaged when it looks so bad. Like someone gave a blockbuster budget to a early 00s TV director. Not every shot, obviously (I loved Lois and Clark chatting while Guy's giant baseball bat bonked something in the distance) but most of them. I looked it up after and guess I shouldn't surprised it was the same guy who worked on The Flash. I get not everyone can be Roger Deakins but damn.

I didn't like the score either, it was like your annoying next-door neighbour's kid practising - and butchering - the classics, completely lacked majesty.

Plus even ignoring the characterisation hatchet job, Angie didn't look like she stepped right out of a Soaryama painting so that's rubbish too. But the film makes up with it by having Hawkgirl do what she does at the end, hell yeah. If only someone would in real life but I digress.

I'm on a bit of an Isabela Merced kick lately because I thought she was incredible in Last of Us, and she didn't get a ton of time in this but she definitely made a lot of the time she was given. Terrific definitely was a major standout, and I think the only character in the movie I had no knowledge of.

One other thing that was almost a problem for me was Gunn's new thing with circling around a character while a bunch of chaotic action is happening around them, but I'm probably just getting old or something heh.

Same here, it's really weird as I'm generally clued up pretty well on most Marvel and DC characters but this guy was a complete surprise to me. At first I thought he must be some rando Wildstorm character Jim Lee brought with him when he sold up to DC but apparently not, he first showed up in the Spectre or Question or something. It's possibly been one of the best introductions to a character in ages, he owned the screen every second he was on it.

Special mention also to Guy taking out waves of tanks with giant middle fingers, it was extremely cathartic.

Another thing I kinda struggled with was Lex. I get he's a bitter and massively resentful monstrous prick, I do but even so...
I really don't think his ego would let him go down as the guy who let Metropolis get swallowed up by a black hole, it felt totally off to me how he refused to shut it down.

Maybe it's just me though, I guess it's more in keeping with the Donner version's level of ambivalent sociopathy.

I have nothing to add beyond YESSSS!!!

Agreed. And I had a completely bizarre laugh that for some reason I was partly holding in when he said "Superman can't make it, so you got an upgrade". He is such a prick but I love Guy. I really really hope Batman punches him in the face! hee hee hee.

I get what you mean..I guess I took it as he keeps committing harder and harder to this goal that he becomes blinder and blinder to all else, no longer even thinking about consequences or what will happen after etc.

Mister Terrific is actually a legacy character. The original Mr. T was a Golden Age superhero named Terry Sloan. He was a member of the Justice Society in the 1940's. Terry was killed by one of his old enemies, the Spirit King. The version we saw in the film is the second Mister Terrific, Michael Holt. He took up the mantle of Mister Terrific at the urging of the Spectre, who was a teammate of the original Mr. T in the JSA. Like his predecessor, Michael joined the Justice Society and eventually became the team chairman.

Since enhanced beings have existed in James Gunn's DCU for 300 years (We all saw that mural in Justice Gang HQ) I hold out hope, however slim, that we may see a Justice Society movie or series someday.

Sad news today. Actor Terence Stamp, who portrayed General Zod in Superman The Movie and Superman II, died today in London at age 87.

He was a great actor and he had a wonderful career with many memorable roles, but to me he will always be Zod. Rest in peace, Mr. Stamp. Thanks for everything.
