Comic Book Talk

@SDcomics you forgot the Greatest Avengers.

Truthfully, I didn't actually forget them. I always got a kick out of those guys. I mean, I was born and raised about 30 miles from Lake Michigan. I used to go swimming there every summer when I was a kid so they hit kind of close to my old homestead.

But since they were played pretty much strictly for laughs I didn't think they were worth mentioning. Maybe I should have.

As much as I love ya @SDcomics it's nice to see we have some disagreements.

I love the JLU method, it's so much more fun to have a revolving cast of heroes to tackle different problems.

I've also said I 100% get the Bendis idea of putting Spidey and Wolverine on the Avengers too. It's the Grant Morrison JLA mindset of "Hey, if this is supposed to be the biggest team, it should have our most popular people." and Spidey was on them before anyway (yes, as a reserve member), so it's nothing new.

Even if the big spread was only mainline Avengers, it would still be a ridiculous amount of people, cause that team has almost as many members as the x-men but somehow, from this readers pov, nowhere near as iconic runs.

For me, the best era is clearly the 90s cause they had jackets, even though that team also kinda stunk.

Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, Wasp, Hawkeye, Wanda, Vision ... that's my core team right there.
Add Black Widow and Doc Strange, and you've got my Avengers shelf.

I don't love Strange as an Avenger, either, but he has no other home in my display. Too OP for the street heroes.

I *still* wish they'd dig up Byrne's cast of Lost Generation characters and do something to fill in those decades. We're at the point there could be another Lost Generation added into the chronology. It's such a shame when a creator is such a raging asshole it brings down his legitimately good works and the universe as a whole suffers.

Agree. Maybe it's because I was a kid watching JLU but I've always loved that approach; the Avengers should be able to call up anybody, not be concerned with exclusivity. It's one of the reasons I loved the Krakoan era of X-Men, they had access to so many characters and used them in ways that suited the story while being cool to see. I got such a kick out of seeing characters like Risque and Wiz Kid on the team for whatever mission required them.

I understand why Marvel did it. That big blockbuster Avengers movie came out in 2011 and suddenly they were a hot commodity. Fans couldn't get enough, so you had ...The Avengers Tabernacle Choir, The Salt Lake City Avengers...
Granted, but that final throw down between the ATC and the SLCA was epic and tragic, what with it being neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother, and what not...

I am not the Avengers absolutist many are, but apart from Beast (who joined when the X-Men were on hiatus), I thought having members of the FF and X-Men being on the team was a mistake - that's just a crossover or team-up, not them joining the Avengers. But the idea that the Avengers could include any hero who was needed and willing to serve worked for me. So I agree with the huge Justice League comp that there could be 100's on call if needed.
