Comic Book Talk

His point is, that if you were going to, say, make Willie Lumpkin an Avenger because he can wiggle his ears ... like, give him the keys to their HQ and an Avengers ID card ... then being an Avenger doesn't really mean that much. And he has a point.

The Avengers are supposed to be Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the first line of defense. If you throw the door open to everyone, then there's nothing special about them anymore.

That's exactly what I don't like about the current Justice League Unlimited book. Cripes. Why don't they just make Stanley and his Monster members?

Hello? The World's Greatest Superheroes? Anyone remember them?

I'm going to get hate mail for this. I just know it.

I didn’t like the stories themselves either, but one of my biggest “yeah, this sucks for me now” moments in Marvel was when suddenly *everyone* was getting on the Avengers. Spidey? Wolverine, for Grodd’s sake? Fuck no, man. Fuuuuuuuuuuck no.
I feel that. I have an extra Spider-Man and Wolverine, but nowhere to put them. I can't stomach the idea of putting them on the Avengers shelf.

One of my favourite Avengers stories was one of the 90s anniversary milestones where the Avengers were spread thin by all their old foes striking at once.

Meanwhile a time traveler appeared to Jarvis and told them their worst villain was going to kill the Avengers today, but nobody knew who that was in their future records.

Twist was pretty obvious but fun.

You guys realize that cover represents characters who have at some point been on an Avengers team, right?

Yes I do. And that's a big part of the problem right there. "An" Avengers team. There have been so may Avengers offshoots over the years that the very concept has gotten diluted to the point of ridiculousness.

I understand why Marvel did it. That big blockbuster Avengers movie came out in 2011 and suddenly they were a hot commodity. Fans couldn't get enough, so you had Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, Avengers Academy, Avengers A.I., Uncanny Avengers, Avengers Assemble, Avengers Beyond, Avengers Forever, Avengers Inc, Avengers World, Avengers Initiative, Dark Avengers, Occupy Avengers, Savage Avengers, Solo Avengers, Ultimate Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Young Avengers, The Avengers Tabernacle Choir, The Salt Lake City Avengers and Santa's Little Avengers.

Two points: First, yes, most of those books were pretty good. I loved Uncanny Avengers, Dark Avengers, Young Avengers and Avengers West Coast. They were all great fun. Second, I totally understand why Marvel did that. They're in business to make money after all and it just makes sense to strike while the iron's hot. It's just good business sense. Selling more books means you can employ more writers and artists. The retailers make money, the distributor makes money and it's good for the overall health of the direct market.

But to me the Avengers just weren't as special anymore if everyone from Squirrel Girl to Mort the Dead Teenager could join. I know that even when it was just one book their roster changed a lot and that's one of the things that made it fun, but the Avengers always worked best when it was Earth's Mightiest Heroes fighting the foes no single superhero could withstand.

Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, Wasp, Hawkeye, Wanda, Vision ... that's my core team right there.

“And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand! Through the years, their roster has prospered, changing many times, their glory has never been denied! Heed the call, then—for now, the Avengers Assemble!”

That's it right there in a nutshell.
