Action Force and Valaverse

So yeah time has changed our society's view about portraying Nazis in media to where they are pretty much avoided unless absolutely necessary to the story.
And I believe that has been to our detriment.
Wiping the Nazis and Nazi imagery from our modern pop-culture villain roster is absolutely a cause of and a reaction to the rise of actual Nazism in our culture, government, and social life.

I believe evil should remain uncovered and in full public view. We majorly fucked up when we started “sanitizing” things. I am incredibly grateful that I was shown the full spectrum of of human evil when I was very young, in frank depictions even and especially in child-oriented media. I knew exactly who Hitler was and (generally speaking) why he and the Nazis were evil when I was four years old, and that was not remotely too early to start processing such things. We have coddled our current children into ignorance and susceptibility to outside corrupting fascist influences because we are too worried they might see something that might spark an uncomfortable conversation.

Agreed.

Edit: Oh and don't get me started on the dumbing down of newer generations with misguided attempts at inclusivity for media stories that blur the line of historical fact and fiction to the point where younger people think the past was all inclusive.

With the advent of so many "historical" (not really) shows/movies that use inclusive casts for real people it has made it so that too many young people, and some older people, think that is what the historical facts were instead of the real facts. Although I guess we can't be too surprised since Jesus has been a "white" guy for centuries according to western Christians, so.....

Same.

I love that it is canon.
😬

For the record, I do too. I just meant that a lot of people say "DC degraded Barbara Gordon!" and I'm usually the guy saying "well, actually..." lol They didn't set out to do anything to her, but obviously the smart choice after the massive hit it became was to make it canon and they weren't exactly using Batgirl anywhere anyway. I think it had been like 7 years or something since she had appeared in a comic?

When I say I get why people find it problematic, I mean that in only a literal sense - I understand why Bobby and Jessie might think it's problematic, but for me personally it's just a graphic novel. What Joker does in the book is terrible, but Edmund Dantes in The Count of Monte Cristo goes through a terrible ordeal at the hands of others for like a decade, and nobody bats an eye to it because nothing sexual is implied. Things happen in literature, the key is being mature enough to understand that stories are just stories, and if it's not your bag then there are others.

Billy the Kid, btw, was just an example of a dude who killed a bunch of peeps but he's celebrated now as a sort of folk-hero. Young Guns certainly helped that, I think lol I think the story of Billy is pretty fascinating, personally. But then, Ted Bundy is my favorite serial killer, so I'm probably just a weirdo (not "favorite" as in "yay look at this guy!", just "favorite" as in "most fascinating", "the one I've researched the most", etc. He was also pretty local to where I live in Washington, as well). Would I buy a Billy the Kid action figure? Of course! Would I buy one that looks like Emilio! I'll take 2! Would I buy a Ted Bundy figure? Ehhhhh.....look, man. Maybe.

Heheheh I don’t know if I would buy action figures of famous serial killers and other big time criminal monsters, but I damn sure consume media about them *constantly*.
I’m listening to a podcast about Jimmy Saville as I type this.

Thanks for responding! I was a massive Billy The Kid... Buff, I guess? Seen several movies, sure, read a ton of books, and actually still keep up with stuff whe something new comes out. I actually reference him in evey book I write in some way. I would not equate him with Bundy though, and am of the belief the number of people Billy killed was heavily exaggerated. I see him as more of a cattle thief who made a lot of local friends and stood up to corrupt businessmen, law enforcement, and even politicians. For what it was worth. And yeah, his Irishness certainly factored in a bit for me heh.

Oof, definitely not!
I’ve got some real affection for the stories of Wild West “outlaws” like Billy, Joaquin Murrieta (I have *feelings* about the flagrant historical inaccuracy of The Mask of Zorro), Calamity Jane and the like, but I certainly don’t equate them with serial killers, or even with mobsters, gunsels, and other “20th century crime celebrity” types.

I definitely got into some others like Wild Bill, and thus Calamity Jane, and read about several others of the era. Now I try to read what I can about the people who were there before manifest destiny.

@Boy Wonder

I'd get Rommel. Maybe.

Are the black supposed to be SEALs, lore wise? I'm just wondering what the pirate aesthetic is meant to do. Like, my dad was the CO of the Silver Eagles in the USMC. Obviously we had Eagles all over the place. I'm no stranger to these Bad Ass Military ties. But what exactly are they?

Lore wise they were seals at the time the US government collapsed so they’re left to their devices

I probably should have started a new paragraph with the bit about Bundy lol 2 separate topics there, my bad. Definitely didn't intend to compare wild west outlaws to modern-ish day serial's.
