Operation Monster Force

I think $40 was about my upper limit for standard OMF figures. I may pick up some of the named characters it they got a bit higher but I don't think I'd go for the generic army builder types.

Yeah as a serious army builder, I really hate how they price them because they are way too expensive to really army build but they also insist that more than half the line should be army builders.

They could really benefit from taking the legions builder approach to some of their stuff. I’m still shocked at the price of Soldiers of Fortune considering it’s all reuse and meant to compete with Valaverse presumably.

I find that last perspective interesting because having wave one in hand I find the figures better than anything I got from Valaverse and on par with (or better than) Mythic Legions fom a quality perspective. The reuse in Mythic Legions is super prevalent and common too, but I suppose easier to swallow because there is a bigger parts library and its less mundane?

Anyway... I really, really like what I've got so far. I'm not a completist for FMF... but I'm way more interested in buying what they are offering me at this point than Vala or the 4H. It will be interesting to see what the next round of solicitations looks like though.

This is my current main line. The thing I'm planning on getting, at least, all non convention exclusive figures for. I went back and got the brown and white Veteran William figures to add 2 more big killoworgs. I'm all in. Also, with Army builders, I try to get 2, but I'm not super crazy about Army building.

I think the mundaneness is part of the problem for the reuse. A line about monsters should have more variety and it feels kinda lacking there.

I don’t think it helps that they’re reusing the tooling in Soldiers of Fortune and we’re now seeing reuse again in the Rocketeer stuff. I totally get the point of reuse but so much reuse kinda hurts at $40+ and when the line isn’t also really catering to a kitbashing and customizer community like legions where reuse is more like releasing LEGO bricks in other colors at times.

Yeah there stuff is better quality than Valaverse but I expect less at 29.99 than 36.99-37.99.

OMF is one of those lines that I would like to collect, but think I will forever enjoy from afar. Something I've scaled WAY back on over the last two to four years is the 'it's super cool but I have no attachment to it' stuff. This is that. Great idea. Great execution. Figures look fun. But five years from now will I be displaying these, binning them, or selling them off because I actually never cared about them and they were mostly just hand-candy when there was nothing else to buy that day?

Especially when these figures, with shipping and exchange rate, are in the $70+ range. It's become, as I said in other threads, financially irresponsible to collect stuff like this (for me, YMMV). I can do it, but I've gotta weigh it against all the other stuff I could get for that same money.

Yeah I feel like that can be the risk with an indie line.

We don’t really have the nostalgia connection to them that gives them the relevance to stay on display after the initial wow factor wears off.

That’s fair. They had to literally throw Dracula into the line to get me to buy in. That’s pretty extraordinary for me, especially for an indie line.

I totally get that... for me its the integration into my G.I. Joe universe that was the initial draw. They had the Red Shadow homage figures that drew me in and then I fell i love with the rest of it and made them integratable into my greater G.I. Joe display and story.

The same way I integrate my Thundercats, Conan, Silverhawks and others into my greater MOTU classics display, the FMF figures, along with Valaverse and some others get worked in to my Joe Classics.

We'll see if I have to get a tad more selective depending on how high the price increases get. But I do love what FMF are doing.

Red Shadow figures drew me in as well as a big red shadows fan, but I will say my enthusiasm for the sleepwalkers was quoted muted by the time they arrived because of the crimson moon wave.

That's it. Realistically, when I look at my current collection, it doesn't include very many things that I don't have a nostalgic connection to. Despite having bought a LOT of stuff I have no nostalgic connection to. Where is all that stuff? Oh yeah, I either sold it or gave it away. So why am I entertaining the idea of buying MORE stuff I have no connection to, just because it looks cool? I'm trying to be a lot more careful about that. It just feels so wasteful when I look back at the literally tens of thousands I've spent on toys that aren't in my collection anymore.

I love the idea of integrating stuff into other collections, but even then I feel like it will be more meaningful to me if it's things I like. For instance integrating those new TCats 'Origins' figures with my existing Origins figures. I like BOTH brands, and it's cool to put them together. I'd love a DC line in Marvel Legends scale/style, because I want certain characters to integrate with others. But I know myself well enough to know that even if something fits really well with an existing collection, it's also likely to be the first up to be purged because it's the thing in that collection that otherwise doesn't really mean anything to me.

I'm sure if I owned a much larger home and had a few million bucks none of this would even remotely be a concern, of course.

I agree. I’d rather buy 3 bare bones troopers at a lower price than the 1 I’ve been buying. They are too costly for easy building. The General figure is the same thing for me. I wouldn’t mind getting one for each head but at $40 each, that’s too much. $25 with just one head and a couple of hands would get me to buy multiples. Not every figure should be fully kitted out. I’d like them to cut back some packing them so full and maybe push the accessory packs more. Even $30 each with a single accessory pack purchase would be better than having 3 extra heads of 3 different heads that we’re currently forced into if we want to troop or character build.

The high price of the troopers was especially annoying when the Phantom Corps figure was revealed and even at 36.99 at the time, you had to buy a 21.99 accessory pack to get the modern military helmet. Like come on! The phantom corps zombie came with helmet so why can’t the regular trooper?

And that’s also ignoring that the convention exclusive monster force figure this year has basically everything you’d want for the Phantom Corps figure at the same price as a regular figure. But you know it’s a con exclusive

I cancelled my zombie troopers a few months ago and not going to reorder them now with the price increase.

Might try and supplement with boss fight skeletons (just wish they didn’t do the crazy colors) or mythic legions skeletons

Monster Force is the only line that I'm really excited about these days. The other lines I collect are mostly complete with just a few gaps to trickle in, but O:MF is fresh, imaginative, and high-quality.

I've no connection to Red Shadow or the like. For me, it's all about Van Helsing putting together a military team of Universal Studios monsters to fight zombies and Sleepwalkers. It's such a fun idea and so well executed. I have a ton of Wave 2 on pre-order and alternate between playing with the Wave 1 figures I have and looking dreamily at the W2 photos on BBTS. Because of my enthusiasm, I'm willing to eat the tariff surcharges when they come.

To be honest, though, that's just Wave 2. Like I said, I've no interest in Crimson Shadow or the Soldiers of Fortune lines, and I found Monster Force Wave 3 pretty underwhelming. Plus Fresh Monkey tried a couple attempts at full-wave exclusives like the Jaguar soldier and that HP Lovecraft head I'd really wanted for the Ambassador. That cost some good will from me.

Buuuut, I'm still looking forward to their Agent Harker and Red Riding Hood figures*, plus I'm hoping for Gen. Mamba (deceased) and some Goregill/Black Lagoon creatures, and still think there's room for a twisted little Mr. Hyde figure, a Bride of Donner Party, and a female mummy character like Ahmanet from the Tom Cruise movie.

* Oh, and Peter, the TV-headed dude they teased for their Voyagers line.
