Super 7 Ultimates Thread

I'll trust the insider knowledge that it's Mattel, but I had been expecting McFarlane.

McF has a need for a license after losing DC and they had already started doing some TMNT figures in the 5" scale.

If they don't land a big license and are left with stuff like Spawn, Mortal Kombat, SportsPicks, some Movie Maniacs and other "posed figures" (extremely low quality statues), then I'd expect them to be in some trouble. $60 Elite Edition Image Founders figures aren't going to save them.

The reveal of the Hasbro D&D 'Questers' line might shed a tiny bit of light on the future of D&D action figures. At the very least, Hasbro has not entirely given up on that brand having action figure appeal. Whether that means they're still interested in letting Super7 have their own crack at it is another thing entirely.

If it going to be the master license then it probably really limits the companies that could put in a serious offer. Not too many companies would have the deep pockets to get the master license for a brand like TMNT. Granted TMNT is no Star Wars or Marvel, but it is still a big brand in the boy's toys sector.

Also if it is the master license that would inherently mean a higher price. A lot of the smaller companies will probably end up in deals similar to what Playmates had. They'll bid on getting a slice of the license from Mattel.

Also worth noting that the license holder also wants to feel 'comfortable' with who takes on the master license. I can tell you with 100% certainty that some people in decision-making roles would look at a giant like Mattel with a board of directors and ten different operations officers and a 'facelessness' and actually feel better about it than a toy company named after the guy that is still actively running it mostly on his own and according to his own whims.

Also also... Todd is not really the kind of guy that can probably talk to the license holder intelligently about how he plans to maximize output/profit and expand into different spaces and make children's toys and such. He'd be all up in there like 'what if I made my own Turtles statues but they are dressed kind of like Batman, but with lots of spikes and chains?!' Like, he'd be excited about the artistic side of it and what he could do that's new and different, but THEY want to know how you're going to keep selling millions of units to 10-year-olds. Very different goals.

I'm intrigued by the Visionaries announcement. I wonder if they'll be Ultimates, ReAction, or ReAction+. ReAction+ would match the original toys. I also wonder how they'll handle the holograms. I thought I read somewhere that toys don't have them now because holograms are too expensive to do. I could be misremembering.

So long as it's a company that can actually make good toys, and is actually WILLING to make those toys, I'm content. I don't trust Hasbro to not drop a line after 1 year. Mattel can probably handle it well enough. I'm STILL waiting on my ideal set of Turtles, so a new company is always exciting enough at face value.

We have NEVER gotten Turtles figures that actually match the opening sequence to the original cartoon. And, if I'm being honest, it kind of feels like the Turtles themselves were consistently kind of the worst figures in NECA's otherwise fairly lovely cartoon line. I'd love for someone to take another stab there.
But given the atrocious quality of S7, I'd also love another company to go hard on re-doing the original vintage line as well.

I'd bet you're more likely to get something like a lenticular sticker to save money. Or swappable parts, or something. I'd be very surprised to see actual holograms. But, I guess, it also depends on what they think people are willing to pay. If they think they can pay 50 cents more per figure for a hologram that they can then justify charging another 15 dollars per figure for... they'll do it.

Kind of like what S7 does with the GitD stuff; GitD plastic costs more. But not to the amount they pretend. They just use 'it's a more expensive material' to justify a huge mark-up. They love doing shit like that.

That's what I've always wanted to see out of a toon turtle design. I don't know if we'll ever get it. I was also fiddling with my display over the past week and, while I don't know if they're the worst in the line (both April figures suck), NECA's cartoon turtles are such an unpleasant in-hand experience. They're no fun to pose and feel and look cheap compared with most of the line. And if last year's beach turtle set is a preview of what their new turtles will be like consider me unimpressed. Now the Archie April as the fifth turtle? That's a nice figure so I'm putting all my eggs in the Archie basket where NECA turtles are concerned.

If Mattel gets the license, I think the most obvious thing would be origins style turtles which probably means super7 doesn’t go back to vintage

I mean, whoever it is will really have to wow me with their TMNT offerings.

If it is indeed Mattel, and it's more Origins in flavor, I'm good. I'll pass. I just got the 200x MOTU figures, my first Origins figures, and...they're okay. Not really my cup of tea. Actually thinking about selling them off in my purge.

But if this is the end of the line for companies like Mety and NECA, and Mattel isn't offering a collector option (and again Origins, to me, does not count)...then my TMNT collecting days are done.

Wife will certainly appreciate that, but as a fan, as a collector...total bummer.

If Mattel is aiming to do a Masterverse-esque line, I imagine on model cartoon Turtles will be up first. I like NECA's offerings, but they've always been lacking to me in some regards. Their Mirage stuff always just feels half and half "This jumped right off the page!" and "Well, this is certainly that design if I squint, use several different designs as reference, play telephone, and filter it through a cartoon lens." I hope they get to continue, but if Mattel does a line of all TMNT eras, I'd probably never buy a NECA Turtle figure again.

Agreed. In-hand, Evil-Lyn is fairly unimpressive. If it was $15 or under I would be a lot more enthusiastic. I'll still grab my favorites though, and probably do body swaps for all of them. Adam would be useful for a comic Keldor custom. If that doesn't become an official figure to reuse those parts, Mattel is a bunch of big idiots.

Hadn't heard of this so I had to look it up.

It's a kid's line, but I am intrigued by the idea of swappable parts. Character customization is a clever way to give the RPG experience to your toys.

I think I just assumed 40 year old technology would be cheap, but I guess if that were the case they'd all be die-cast metal too.

I imagine Plan B is a flat sticker with a clip-on, translucent model of whatever it is coming out of the...I don't know...staff? Did they have hologram staves?

Origins-style product definitely counts as a collector option. It may just not be the option you want. And, frankly, there's NO fucking way in this universe or any other that Mattel forks out the resources to acquire a TMNT master license with no plan for adult collectors beyond something like Origins. They haven't done that for anything else, so I don't know why they'd start with one of the biggest nostalgia brands on the planet.
Mattel is actually starting to understand who their audience is. I'd say the odds are very good they come out with something they feel adult collectors are going to want. Mind you, that doesn't necessarily automatically mean you are going to like it. Or that I am. But I think they're going to put their best foot forward. It's still a Mattel foot, so we'll have to wait and see.

Something I'd be excited about with a Mattel line is the potential for a '90 movie or '87 cartoon line of figures that are TOYS. Not delicate collectibles with paint gumming up all the joints and flying off in little paint shavings whenever you move something. NECA made for a beautiful collection of cartoon figures that I was constantly afraid to do anything with and, consequently, just couldn't ENJOY. And I'm always afraid of breaking the movie stuff.

I'd take slightly less beautiful figures for stuff I can have fun with in the way I do with Marvel Legends, Joe Classified, etc.

If Mattel has a single person with a brain working there, they will do a line in the vein of Marvel Legends or whatever and make a unified line that encompasses all eras/styles of TMNT together, in a relative scale where they are confident they can do every figure justice. Don't fucking start with 7" tall Turtles and then be like "well fuck.. either we can't do Rocksteady or he has to be 100 dollars...."

New eternia proves that Mattel can handle the mutant side of TMNT well.

This probably kills Super7 turtles though
