McFarlane DC Multiverse

Oh Matty ain’t perfect by a long shot.
It’s that whole “I literally can’t bring myself to vote for *that* guy, but the other guy is still pretty damn awful” situation.

Is there something going on that I’m unaware of? I’ve seen a number of times on this thread that people are concerned about which version of a figure they receive from this latest wave. Mostly regarding Zatanna and Detective Chimp. I generally order directly from Todd’s store and the last time I received a random Platinum was Captain Carrot. I think that was before the EQL drawings.

Is this a Canadian concern? Does it happen when you order from other sources? I bought a bundle and am pretty much expecting the standard versions of all five.

Amazon and Best Buy are known to randomly mix in the platinums in place of regular orders (which is how it's supposed to be). MTS generally holds the Plats for EQL. BBTS and most of the Canadian etailers just list the plats for a premium price. I've often received platinums from Amazon and I especially hated it when they were those all Grey artists proofs versions that they did in the early days of the line. I think I've still got like 3 of those Zods. LOL

EB just gets what they get.

Say if there were six pre-orders, and then they get five regulars and one platinum zatanna, usually the first person who shows up gets to pick. That's how my store runs.

But I'm also charming, and most of the staff will just ask me on the pick up call if I was interested in the platinum.

But still. A lot of collectors are completionists or some people want the specific version, so just getting one to fulfill six pre-orders/ all the people coming in of the street is not enough.

I think all the kerfuffle about it is mostly coming from Doc who was in the states though. He just wants one version of the chimp, which is not guaranteed.

Amazon, Best Buy, GameStopWalmart, Target, the big stores just ship what they ship, at least around here. For a while GS would send one of each if you bought two which was weirdly cool. (I got both Reeves Superman figures that way.) I don’t think I’ve seen an actual selection of McFarlane figures in person in two years around here to actually pick one out in person.

I’m doing most of the complaining about Z but I know it wasn’t just me all along because Power Girl, Deadshot, etc. had a lot of randomized shipments. His unpainted “chase” figures were an issue for a while too. I’m just being bitchy cos I want the green Chimp. (If BB hadn’t been so early I would’ve just jumped on BBTS since they conveniently separate them out, but baby Z sold out fast there today.)

Best Buy did disproportionately get Platinum editions of the Penguin when he was out. I don't know that that will continue, but it seemed like BestBuy was getting platinums with more frequency for a while there.

Don't try to just order multiples of something from Gamestop thinking you'll get the platinum version. My 7 green-faced Two-Face's and I bid you good day.

The unpainted were some bullshit. Even Platinums, when I get the mail lottery on them they're not actually something I want. Hawkgirl.

The best though was when Amazon did give me the platinum Wonder Woman, mostly because they weren't giving anyone Wonder Woman in the first place. And that one I did want but wrote off.

The only vendors I know that let you specifically cherry pick plats are the Canuck Retailers like DJC or Snowman or CMD, but you do pay for it, and even though it is on a storefront, let's be real. It's still a first come first serve Chase, and they are scalping it since they're charging more than retail.

Even DJC, a store I like, you've got to know exactly what time he likes to put things up, or catch his Facebook/ Instagram notification to know when.

I don't know how it works in the US, but since the majority of these are also all funneled at EB, Red Platinum just means EB. It's not really a chase or hunt to get one. But Zatanna is also marked EB Exclusive in the receipt, which isn't Red Platinum.

The only Mattel products I've bought in the last 16 years is MOTU Origins which I think technically accomplished what it set out to do (recreate vintage MOTU except this time with articulation) perfectly. So in theory I'd be willing to give their new DC line a chance. The problem is, I don't want to restart a new DC line.

When do the platinums typically go up on BBTS? Is there any rhyme or reason to the timing? If I can get the Zee and Elongated Man platinums without paying an arm and a leg, I will.

Oh, wait…I forgot. We’re already paying an arm and a leg for the standard versions.

I really don’t either. McFarlane wasn’t able to make my DCUC collection superfluous, so I don’t know how Mattel’s new line is going to make both my DCUC and McFarlane collections superfluous.

That’s really what I need to get on board, and that’s asking a lot from a mass market retail line that’s not even starting until 2027.

BBTS put the platinums up when they receive their stock and do not make them available for pre-order. The only way to have some idea about when they hit is if you've got a pre-order in for the regular version and you get an email about when it hits or the reminder email they send shortly ahead of time that it's expected to arrive soon. They usually sell out near immediately after they're made available. I think that Nerdzoic is similar but I've never bought anything from them. I used to watch the Canadian sites religiously but the tariffs situation has made it so I'm only willing to do business with ToySnowman now and completely ignore the rest.

I've been collecting DC figures for more than 25 years and I have at least one version of every character ever put out by all of DC Direct / DC Collectibles, Mattel and McFarlane. I expect to have zero interest in Mattel's basic line unless they make never figures of never before made characters that aren't available in their other lines, but I expect to be all in on their Ultimates (which are like Todd's Collector Edition with more accessories) and will likely buy a lot of their Elite editions. I'm just using the naming conventions that they use with their WWE product as I have no idea if they'll use that same terminology or not. I generally only buy WWE figures on clearance but from memory I think that the basics run around $12, the Elites $23-$25 and the Ultimates around $40. Someone who buys these regularly at full price probably knows better than I do.
