Star Wars Black Series

I grew up in suburban Ohio in the 80s and I am distinctly aware of how homophobic we were as teenagers. I hope that's not an indicator of my being a bad person.

I think it's fair to allow some understanding for the time they were in. Like, you don't get a pass for owning slaves just because everyone else did, but I can understand a view of Black people based entirely on only hearing about them or seeing their caricatures in the movies.

If all you know about Asia is opium dens and ninja stars, that's how you're going to think of them.

But, we have examples of people around us moving past our baser impulses to emulate? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're actions were objectively good, but a racist 150 years ago is fractionally bad as a racist now, if that makes sense.

I remember seeing someone asking if there was any type of person Lovecraft wasn't afraid of and thus bigoted toward and it's like... man, you can find him shitting on pretty much everybody. He wasn't a well man, but I do think you've gotta acknowledge how vile he was given how much reach he has.

I'm trying to remember which writer from that era was just starting to show signs of remorse and growth when he died young. I thought it was Howard but I'm probably wrong. I just remember one of their peers, in letters to other writers of the time that were published after his death, basically being "so I'm rethinking this racism thing" but he didn't live long enough to actually get there.

And all that being said, I do think it's worth reading people like Lovecraft and Howard because it informs us of the bigotries of their days and that helps us not repeat the future. I do try to keep from putting money in the pockets of LIVING bigots though. Dead ones, that's just educational.

No no I totally understand where you are coming from.

My contention is that we would/could/did have had examples back then as well, and that even if we didn’t we would *still* have an obligation not to be cruel. It’s a false narrative that we somehow live in a more enlightened time and that prior ages were universally more racist/nationalist/bigoted/cruel, etc.

Ultimately, all that is stuff that needs to be learned in the first place, rather than unlearned: it is not inherent in human nature, we are a social-collaborative species. We don’t start out cruel and bigoted, we are carefully taught to be that way. We also have a tendency to romanticize the past and make excuses for our forebears while holding onto “tradition”, none of which is productive nor healthy.

I think a racist today is just as bad as a racist at any other time. Being more *accepted* (which was certainly true previously) doesn’t make a thing better or less reprehensible: if anything “following a social trend” makes it *worse* because in addition to having antisocial views one also becomes a follower, and a participant in group-think.

I think this all comes off harsher in text than it would in “real life”. But yeah I don’t give folks from the past any kind of a pass on odious social views. I don’t give *anyone* a pass on odious social views. Ever. Myself very much included.

Man, I've been watching videos of people reviewing the next Wave of Black series with Ventress, Boba and Jango, and Vader. But now, people already have the Quinlan Vos, Jedi Dooku Wave. They definitely aren't out here in the US yet, but I'd say we may get the Fett Wave Late December/Early January and the Vos Wave not too long after that.

Crazy. But I'm ready for them.

They continue to be 3008 and we, unfortunately, are still two thousand and late. But going off those videos, we do have some bangers ahead. Really excited for these next couple waves, but I'm definitely stuck in that in-between of wanting them to hit soon and wanting them to wait. Spent a lot of money lately with the holidays, but I suppose I still have a kidney I could sell.....

Same. I figured Asajj and Jango might be out by the end of the month, but not that and the other wave of all lightsaber users that most of us preordered the whole thing of, and the new Boba Fett. Please let that wave wait a month. January. I have nothing else preordered for January. Although the Spiderman wave will probably hit then too. But still, this month still trying to recover from and wait for the rest of the Marvel figures BBTS hasn't charged me for yet lol.

I was pulling out my holiday Star Wars figures this weekend and somehow or another I never got the holiday Ewok. I thought I was tracking all of this pretty vigilantly but he slipped by. Luckily I was able to find him for less than MSRP.

Are the astromech and the reindeer trooper the only releases this year?

I've been really thankful (but not enough to mention it last Thursday) that they haven't done a festive Boba Fett. Though it could probably get paid for from our holiday fundings...
