S.H.Figuarts General Anime (Dragon Ball, Naruto, MHA, etc.)

I want to pick those up, but I’m holding off for a Shinji announcement that I feel will never come.

The new Super Saiyan Goku hit my pile of loot today. He's the only thing occupying it though so I probably won't ship him for a bit.

Got in and opened up the new SSJ Goku.

For the cost, he's great value. Two full head options, almost 100% matte finish, he feels really premium. Bandai is getting a lot better with their "discount" releases.

Some qualms, though. The right bicep on mine pops out rather easily. And the head sculpts are... fine? Way better than their previous SSJ Gokus, but not as good as what the third parties are doing. He looks more bootleg than the bootlegs. And the head pieces - face, hair, bangs - don't really want to stay together. It doesn't take much to knock the sandwich apart when posing, and squishing them back together with force is painful.

The new body is very nice. The sleeves are great, and adjustable to change up the look. The rubber pieces work wonderfully. He is absolute hand candy. The shrinking neck is a good idea poorly executed. It should be a bit longer than it is at its longest, and pushing it shorter just looks silly. They also updated where the neck peg sits in the hair... it's towards the back now, so head swaps aren't so easy with this guy. You'd need to pull out the entire neck peg to do it, but then you'd need an entirely different peg system to use these heads on a different body, one that hits close to a right angle. I'm sure someone is working on a 3rd party peg right now, but it's an unnecessary "improvement" that I imagine might be there to noodle with the bootleggers.

Speaking of head swaps, the skin tone on this Goku is unique, meaning this body won't work with a lot of other heads and vice versa. Subsequently, for me, the original Demoniacal Fit Martialist Forever body with 3rd Party heads will probably be my go to Goku. Tonsen/DCG for base form, Air/DCG for SSJ, and DKO for SSJ2. I like that I can capture almost every look I want with one buck and a bunch of heads. The heads also work on the SDCC Nimbus/Gohan set, so there's the option of a slighter body or two Goku's in the display at once, if I want.

I'd rather not have gone third party to build out a perfect "Ultimate" Goku, but Bandai seems to delight in making their builds not compatible with each other, and leaving out pieces you'd want for a complete set. Because of the arm issue, this guy might make it back to GameStop, though he's a great desk figure and fun to pose, and ultimately is pretty cheap. It's wild to think of a Marvel Legend at this quality and at this price. If you're not as picky as me about Goku's looks, he's a win.

I don't own any DBZ, but am compelled to get a Vegeta and Bulma.

What's the best options/are there upcoming ones to hold out on?

From what I remember there are three Bulmas. Two were from their (likely canceled) Dragon Ball sub-line, and had Bulma in her pink skirt first appearance look and another with her in kind of a engineer/combat outfit which I *think* was from a cover or piece of artwork and not from inside the manga itself. The third was the only Z version of her so far, which is her in her Namek safari outfit. That one I believe was exclusive to Bandai's website and hasn't been reprinted, so it will probably cost the most of the three... but is likely the one you want if you want an adult Bulma to pair with Vegeta.

For Vegeta, the sky is the limit really, they've made so many. They have a new SSJ one coming called "Dangerous Pride" that looks really good, and they recently teased a base version of him as well. You could also get the Daima base form Vegeta, he would work as a Z one if you're not that picky, and he's on sale for $25 or less at a lot of places right now. I don't think it's worth getting the SSJ one that is currently out - his heads aren't great, the hair is pearlescent instead of flat yellow, and the body is outdated.

If you want a scouter style one, I'd recommend 24000 Power Level Vegeta, though he was a web exclusive as well, and is a bit pricey. He also doesn't have the "skirt" armor of the Saiyin Saga, but there are third party kits for him, or you could buy a Dragon Stars figure on sale and give him that armor.

My experience doesn't go past Z really, so I don't know about the blue haired versions, etc.

I really appreciate you taking the time to break that down.

Those look exactly like the things I would want. I was looking at Daima. Maybe I'll take that savings and put it towards the Bulma.

I'm a casual fan at best, but I feel like I need Toriyama and Toonami rep with my Sailor Scouts.

Be careful, it's a fun line... easy to fall in! Teen Gohan, Future Trunks, DBS Piccolo, and Krillin are some of my fav SHFs.

I love Piccolo too, but he’s one character they haven’t quite nailed despite getting close. His most complete figure is up for order again (The Proud Namekian), but the face sculpts weren’t great on the neutral expression and he suffers from a flat chest, but at least that can be hidden via the cape. They recently did a Nail and I kind of wanted it for the heads to use with Piccolo, but he was 85 bucks or something and I’m not paying that for Nail.
