I'm late to the party, but this is actually a big question of mine. My mother, for instance, is a staunch Republican. She is the type that votes Red no matter who is on the ticket because she votes for her team, not for any specific candidate. As such, all my life, the one true greatest president of them all was Ronald Reagan. And a lot of Republicans felt the same.

For some reason that I can't seem to figure out, Trump gets that same pedastal that Reagan did. That pedastal was NOT given to H.W. Bush or W, it was not given to nominees like McCain or Romney. Granted, she voted for them as well, obviously, but they weren't considered the greatest thing ever or "the only person who can save our country." I can't put my finger on the reason why Trump, above all of those other guys, gets the shine and the love and the excuses that he receives. I remember my mother freaking out during Obama's second term because "he has no guard rails now!" and later it was "he'll never leave office, he'll declare himself king!" And I just have this feeling that in 2028, when Trump decides to not leave, it will be given an excuse. "His terms weren't consecutive", or "we need to make an exception to save our country" or some other such nonsense. Just like they do with everything else. I just can't figure out why George Bush wasn't this popular, or W.

Well, except for one little thing...none of those guys took over following a Black man. Perhaps the racism runs so deep with these people that the first White guy to take over after the Black man was in office is enough to catapult him into cult-like worship? I dunno. But that's the only actual difference I can fine. Well, that, and...Trump encourages everyone to be racist. That goes far as well, I suppose.

As far as tariffs, they are all convinced that any hardships are "temporary" and that "things will get better." When they don't get better, they will say "this is that temporary hardship". And when things never, after a full term, get better and yet in fact have become much, much worse? They will blame Biden. They will say "Trump did his best, but Biden..." just as last time they said "Trump did his best because when you look at Obama..."

This tariff situation will never truly hurt them. I mean, technically it most certainly will, but they'll welcome it with open arms because they have become the ones who will gladly shave their heads and self-castrate if it means their side gets to win.

I've heard this from my mom (the "cheap Chinese crap" comment) while she sips coffee made in a coffee maker from China and watches Fox News on a television that is also made in China. Some people refuse to look at the label to keep their biases going, and even if you hold them down and force them to look at it there is always a sled somewhere nearby to put that goal post on and get to moving.
 
I've seen at least a few videos of the guy in Dropkick Murphys call out someone in the crowd wearing a Trump shirt, and he makes a deal with them to give them a free DM tshirt, that they have to trade out, if the trump shirt was made in China. From what I've seen, these people always end up sporting a made-in-America Dropkick Murphys shirt for the rest of that show.
 
Just airing out thoughts while sick, don't have the mental to read through the thread fully, but as of now I've basically been priced out of this hobby. And now I'm seeing the tariffs regarding non-American film/entertainment as well. Foreign media is my other major hobby.

I've relied on media piracy for years for as I have a fairly low income, but I've still delegated a bit of my income to picking up releases of some smaller studios or companies like Discotek, who in particular import older (often untranslated) anime and such. Very worried about how this decision may impact them and similar companies, especially if it's something as ridiculous as 100% tariffs.

I don't really know what Trump is really attempting, I'm not as well-read in current politics as I'd like to be, though the start of this term is definitely reminding me of a certain someone.

This shit is all over toy social media. The tariffs are a real issue and they’re gonna really hurt or hobby and hurt people’s livelihood, but saying that people need to die or be killed?

It’s not like it’s even just from the tariffs. The amount of Luigi memes and other calls for death I’ve seen since before “liberation” day was already disturbing to me and since the tariffs it’s just gotten worse.

If there is a neighborhood dog that bites every person who walks by, eventually people start talking about what to do with the dog, right? The sentiment of "I can't wait until ___ dies" is a pretty normal reaction when you're constantly being bitten, and I honestly don't give a shit about toys. I'm being bitten in important parts of my life, not just in the hobbies. Eventually, you look extremely forward to the day that dogchain no longer has anything attached to it.
 
Per the question regarding de minimus for Chinese shipments. Basically any of us collecting import toys from China is screwed.

As of Friday, parcels worth less than $800 will be subject to a 120% levy or a flat fee of $100, rising to $200 from June. That is on top of the 145% tariffs already placed on all Chinese imports, as part of the wider US-China trade war.

I used to buy stuff from Aliexpress. Joytoy Warhammer as an example. Now, I'd be getting paying a 120% levy (or $100 flat fee) and 145% tariff (or whatever the tariff is currently set at) to import my small shipment. Used to be able to get a $30 figure shipped to the US and still be cheaper than going through US sellers. No longer. So yeah, even if China was still shipping to the US, collecting Chinese figures is no longer an option.

I did see a Japanese store comment that they can't lie about the value of shipments. As their system is all digital and linked to the government, so they can't modify values of shipments to help the buyer. I'm sure smaller sellers will work with you to reduce the declared value of your shipment. But importing toys is now a pain if not impossible. Looking forward to people having to smuggle toys into the US.

Gotta love the implication that poor people can't keep a clean house or teach their kids not to break things.

Never mind the math presented that also implies the amount of toys poor children should own should be zero. Have you ever known a "broke" kid who had even a third of what a rich kid had?
 
It's curious to me that of all the products to take center stage, dolls/toys are in the media. Forget us old farts and our collections; hamstringing the toy industry publicly is just rock stupid and mean. These people hate anyone "less" than them experiencing any joy or convenience. It's like the idea of non-rich people being unhappy gets them horny.
