Dan is 100% hypebeast. When I wore the Kith Phoenix shirt to NYCC, he recognized and commented on it. I feel the same way when everyone shits on Funko Pop collectors, too. I'm not into them but I don't think of them as some distinct group from the likes of us.

It really doesn’t have anything to do with the “what”; it’s the “why” and the “how” that are the sticking points for me. I’d have the same grave disdain for *anyone* trying to be a “show off” or play hierarchy games about *anything*.

No you're totally right. And I know some posts have sounded critical of the specific type of Fandom or culture... I dont think that really is or should be the intent. It isn't mine. People spend shitloads on nice purses or cars for whatever reason. It makes them happy. If that purpose is more of a flashy status thing... alright, not typically why we buy Legends, for example, but it is a motivator for some. I think that's why its so intriguing to smoosh those worlds together. Many don't think of owning a particular Legends figure as being a status thing. Maybe getting it early lol but not just... having it. Attributing prestige to a figure you lucked out getting or were willing to pay very high amounts for is a newer concept... as far as Legends go. It does remind me a lot of the random Chase variant days of Toy Biz tho.

That’s specifically what I object to, which may have more to do with intent.

But trust: anyone trying to flex “status” with me is only going to lose “status”. Like waaaaaay back in the 80s, before I knew what a vile piece of shit Donald Trump is on a deep level, I already despised him for his disgusting displays of “wealth” and “status”. Vomit-inducing. And I know *for sure* that anyone trying to “puff up” over others is dealing with serious internal insecurity issues.
 
To even pull this back further, if you have disposable income to have a hobby of things you don't need, and you can spend $1,000's on it in a year, then you are likely in the top 5% of the world yourself in term of income and wealth. And that is probably everyone in this forum. We are all privileged to be able to have what we have and be in a position to even consider a $40 toy.

Valid point, and definitely means you're part of a privileged group. Especially, again, if doing so doesn't put you in some financial peril.

Now... if every person I met and all of my buddies I brought into my basement like, "you see all of these Legends? Yeah... thousands. Way more Legends than you. I bet you wish you had so many Legends. I'm better than you *deep and unflinching eye contact*" that would probably be... not the best reason to have them. Now, in reality, my collection has gotten to the point of mild embarrassment and, believe me, none of my friends consider it a positive social thing lol at all. So, to have a Legend people would covet in that way is kinda funny.

I agree, but not so much humble as appreciative of what many of us have. As for influencers, its just another name for stars or celebrities which people have followed for generations and given way too much attention to.
