I really think everything after Abyss wasn't necessary, and it's definitely my favorite movie he's made
Possibly hot take. Abyss is good, actually. I sort of wonder if some of the Abyss DNA isn't speaking to the marriage he was about to exit. Funny how art is often a self-portrait.
The Fifth Element is a joyful masterpiece and y'all are scrooges.
I like it, it's Besson's creeper ass that ruined it for me. In a vacuum the movie is great fun.

Oh absolutely it was! I think that personal component is what makes the heart of that movie. When the script was finished though, they were still together so I wonder if it was based on a trial separation or something, then they were done by the release I think.

Just like I love how Anakin and Padme's end kinda mirrors Lucas and Marcia. "I don't want any of this shit you're talking about; I just want you and the kids in a normal sized house!" "What?! But power!"

For Cameron it feels like a guy who knew his relationship had been over for a while trying to convince himself it could come back eventually. Missing the fire that used to be there.

Actually, come to think of it, some of that DNA is probably in Strange Days too.

WOW. That's a hot take. I loved Gary Oldman's performance. I even liked Chris Tucker's. The only part of him that I thought was weird that it was so pronounced that it was a bit jarring to not have had it all along.

The Fifth Element is one of the few sci-fi movies my wife loves. When I watched it with my youngest son a while back, she walked out and was disappointed I hadn't told her we were watching it. I love Tuckers (way) over the top performance. He only had Friday under his belt at that point, and even though his characters were similar acting (manic), he still made it something completely different and very memorable.

But about a different wife? Hmm.... Is he also Billy Zane in Titanic to Kate Winslet's Linda Hamilton? Or is that Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies?
How much of Strange Days is about the love of a good woman saving a dude who is stuck on a different girl he should have forgotten? A lot to be dissected there, especially considering Kathryn directed.

I think it's probably too tidy to assume everything a director does in a 1-to-1 analog for their lives, but I do think they mine certain, let's say fruitful, emotional quarries for the work they produce.

Mmmm, that's right... I kinda forgot that aspect of it. Awesome.

Oh I'm sure. Everything I write has a shit-ton of me and people I know in it. I have three different characters based on my wife.

Get ready:

I don’t like Friday. I’ve had (very stoned) friends try to get me to laugh at it for decades. I just don’t think it is funny or entertaining. But I’m not generally into “slacker” comedies in general, so there’s that.
But like I don’t necessarily think it’s “bad”, it’s just not for me. I can’t be so kind about Titanic or Avatar, and while I don’t think The Fifth Element is *that* bad, I just don’t think it is “good”.

I saw Friday in the theater with a group of friends and may not have watched it otherwise, but I enjoyed it without ever being a stoner.
