I'm against Vance and religion, but I fail to see how his quote was bad? He hopes his wife converts, but if she doesn't want to she has free will. I fail to see the moral failing.

The moral failing is in that he's a blatantly-obvious filthy hypocrite Pharisee instead of a person that does what Jesus said for us to do. He very obviously doesn't give a single fuck about her soul because he very fucking obviously doesn't give a fuck for his own.
