X-Men '97

That's what I mean - they're basically admitting defeat right from the start. Including Magik as a cameo in season 1 is them saying that she's never gonna be a real character in this show, which just seems like throwing in the towel too early. There's no good reason why this show couldn't run for a decade, add a spinoff, and cover stuff like the splinter teams in decent depth. I guess that's just the problem with seasonal television though, future seasons are never guaranteed so they can't really plan out 6 seasons in advance, making them just cross off that checklist of iconic character moments and costumes as quickly as they can. Good for anyone who wants those costumes in toy form too I guess, barring the stylistic incompatibilities mentioned earlier.
You said it yourself.
The creators are just operating within the known constraints. I don't think it's fair to ask them to bank on telling a story that would require them to run for as long as some of the most successful cartoons not on prime time. They know that's not going to happen, or that it's at best extremely unlikely. So the decision has to be made to throw out some fan service and fun stuff 'just because' - or just never have those things appear in animation ever.

Look, I want a full on X-Force show just like the current X-Men show. But I'd rather see 9 seconds of Shatterstar helping the X-Men in this show than just never see Shatterstar ever appear in animation for the rest of my life. Because the latter is just... way.. way.. way more likely to be the case.

Maybe it's just blind optimism, but I don't necessarily think characters having a cameo early on means they can't play a part later on. Unless, you know, they got wiped out at Genosha, but I'd like to think they kept certain characters like Emma, and even made a point of her being alive, to use her later. Characters come and go all the time in the Marvel universe, X-Men especially. And who knows, now that Beau is out as showrunner, and his plan beyond season 2 is more or less being thrown out/reworked, that could mean we'll get mutants we wouldn't have otherwise (alternatively could mean we won't get mutants we would have, but still). They've brought people back from the dead before- it's a universe where anything is possible.

Relevant to this conversation; X-Men '97 has reportedly been picked up for Season 3 already. So apparently they did learn something from the success of Season 2 and want to get Season 3 rolling while Season 2 is airing. That'll be nice.

But also.. yeah.. even death means nothing in comics, and in X-Men specifically. So I don't think anything is really off the table here anyway.
I'm interested to see how they handle Wolverine. He pops up in the trailer with the brown costume and metal claws, but like.....? How?

I would hope that having lots of Apocalypse means Archangel factors in a decent amount for obvious reasons. Most of what I saw in the trailer was a laundry list of toy "looks" we can likely expect. Personally I'm not really wow-ed by the Sunspot we got and would have rather that spot gone to Bastion and just saved Sunspot for the season 2 waves where it appears as though he's got his 90s X-Force costume.

That Animated Psylocke and Archangel would be definite buys for me personally. I just hope they don't go so heavy on X-Men 97 that MOST of the X-Men stuff we get is being dedicated to that property rather than comic stuff too. So far I'd say they've respected both universes a decent amount without letting one completely overshadow the other. Don't know that I'll be going all in on movie waves after 2 different forms of media as X-Men characters are being fed to us non-stop.

Time travel. Or he gets them back. He does that sometimes.

More specifically, I meant are we not going to actually get the bone claws storyline and they're just going to jump to 'he's fine now?' Or is this just an alternate version of Logan while they're time/universe-hopping and 'our' Logan is still all FUBAR?

Does he? I thought Wolverine’s claws looked a little wavy like they might be bone claws, but obviously the video isn’t great. I’ll have to watch it again.

Definitely metal. The scene is even just a straight fan-service reproduction of Wolverine #1.

I guess we’ll see. It wouldn’t be surprising based on the pacing of season one for them to fast-track the adamantium rebonding and skip the whole Genesis/feral Wolverine plot. Or it’s a fake-out for the trailer and that’s actually Morph or something.

Good point about Morph. I suppose any one of those characters could technically be Morph. Or they could all be Morph. Maybe we're Morph and just don't know it yet.

Oh yeah. I'm not complaining about it - just curious what they're doing. My gut instinct is that this is a different version of Wolverine. But who knows.

It's been discussed plenty, but I really wouldn't mind if season 2 slows down a bit. I enjoyed season 1 but it was breakneck pace - several of the stories they adapted could have been the backdrop for their own season.
Definitely. As above, I think that's all part of the creators just wanted to do as much for the fans, even if it's just nods and easter eggs, as they could with the time they were being given. I can't imagine trying to write for something as complex as X-Men and not even knowing how many episodes I'm ever going to get. Trying to run through a bunch of cool things and hope they renew you for another season so you can keep going.
The only bad thing about the S3 renewal is that the announcement came AFTER S2 was already deep underway, which means they probably will not be able to adapt Season 2 to the full knowledge they get at least one more season.

I don't necessarily see the pace slowing any time soon. I think it's great that they want to continue adding in some of the more mature stories, but they're not gonna sacrifice the action either, whether that's a Disney mandate or what. The few slower episodes we got in season 1 got some criticism for breaking up the pace (which, to be fair, I think has more to do with where in the season they were placed moreso than their existence), and I can already see the vocal fanboys decrying the lack of action in an X-Men show. It's admirable that they want to try and please both crowds, but you're never gonna satisfy everyone.

Then again, now that they know they have a future ahead, maybe they will take some more time to breathe. I suppose it depends on if they knew they were getting season 3 when making season 2. At this point I think it would take a hell of a lot to get Disney not to renew the show again, so I'd hope the crew can rest a bit and get more experimental, even if nothing is official.

Didn't the show always have a two season pick up? So they knew they had more than 10. I doubt S1 would have been allowed to end like that without S2 pretty much happening.

At the very least, Motendo should have been full episode length. They designed all of those levels and *barely* used them!

But again, that's the problem with short seasons. Not enough runway.

And the reason we got all those cameos, aside from being fan service easter eggs - they can merchandise the new designs.
