Skurge the Executioner BAF Wave

I've been against the BAF program for a LONG time. Because it's ALWAYS a bad idea for the consumer, except those very rare whales that buy every single figure and are perfectly happy doing so.

Thanks for the nod. I can't be mad about the BaF concept because without it I absolutely would not have Armadillo or Xemnu or a few others that simply would not exist without the BaF concept.

Yeah the figures are expensive and decisions have to be made... but they are down to two baf waves a year now, and this is a wave where I'm happy to have most of them, so I'm not too bothered... at least I no longer have to buy 3 MCU figures I absolutely do not want to build a baf I do...

I still love Marvel Legends and am eager to see what's next. A horse? Yes, please. Marrina? Stingray? Spot - surely?

I'm going to ride until the wheels fall off.

If you do decide to give it up - and I hope you do whatever is right for you - one of us is tracking you down with Golden Age Torch whenever he gets made and forcing him into your hands whether you like it or not. Even those who forswear the hobby deserve to have their holy grail when it gets made.

Thank you, buddy. I really do appreciate that. It means a lot to me.
This is me exactly. I've got my long list I want to see get made just like anyone else, but I like when a new random character shows up. I basically don't follow comics anymore, but if a character I don't know gets announced I'm guaranteed to go read at least a few issues. It's part of why I love when modern characters get made - it keeps me (sort of) up to date with what's going on in the books. I wouldn't want to that to crowd out the classics or my personal wants, but I've never really felt like that's how the line works - it's always been a hodgepodge of modern & classic, A-list & completely obscure, comic & movie/game/other media, etc...

Well, no not always. It has been for the past several years, but in the beginning, in the ToyBiz days, Marvel Legends was strictly comic accurate only.

Way, way back when, ToyBiz stumbled on a formula that worked great for them and sold like hotcakes. Spider-Man Classics was a line of six inch, comic accurate, highly articulated figures that came with a wall mountable display base and ... ta-da! A comic book. ToyBiz and Marvel wanted at least one line out there that promoted the comics, not movies or cartoons or video games. The comics. Well, like I said, that sold great. And then the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie was about to come out. Marvel didn't want the sales of Spidey Classics and Movie Spidey to cannibalize each other, so the decision was made to put Classics on hold during years in which there was a movie. But, since they didn't want to lose precious shelf space in stores, ToyBiz came up with a replacement line: Marvel Legends. The idea was that the line would feature Marvel's most popular characters in their most iconic looks in the six inch scale, highly articulated, with a wall mountable display base and a comic book. The first assortment was going to be Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Doctor Doom. Doom did not get tooled in time and had to be delayed until the second assortment. He was substituted with a Toad sculpt that they had laying around. No one thought this line was going to sell. Wal-Mart wasn't on board with it and that's 40 percent of your sales right there. At first it was just Target, TRU and Gamestop. But we all know what happened. The line exploded. Wal-Mart got on the bandwagon with the third wave. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Sometimes fate works in the most mysterious ways. If you like Marvel Legends, you owe thanks to Alan Fine and Jesse Falcon. And a little bit to Sam Raimi. ;)

So I do feel a bit better now than I did a couple of days ago.

I still want to get rid of this collection, it feels like an albatross around my proverbial neck. But I have been talking to my girlfriend who is as wise as she is beautiful. She said "You've been doing this for over 20 years. Don't be rash. Before you do anything, take a few days and at least think about it." She also pointed out that I went to the doctor on Wednesday for my annual flu vaccine. While I was there, I got my covid and rsv shots, as well. When you're elderly you have to do these things. She said that I wasn't quite myself for a couple of days after that. And she probably has a point. A three for the price of one is quite a chemical concoction. She said wait until your body adjusts and you're thinking more clearly before you make any big decisions. Well, like my dear old Daddy always used to say "It's hard to argue with someone when they're right." Too true. So I'll give it three or four days then decide.

And lo and behold. Kismet. Just today I received in the mail from BBTS my Marvel Legends Man-Wolf figure.

A beautifully sculpted figure of a classic Bronze Age character. Great paint. Loaded with accessories. Highly articulated. It's basically the reason I got into this hobby in the first place.

EXCEPT for that 40 dollar price tag. Because of that stupid Magic The Gathering card.

See? This is what I mean. This is what I'm talking about. Shit like this. I know nothing about Magic The Gathering. I've never played a collectible card game in my life. It means nothing to me. And before anyone goes off on me, let me say that card games are fine for people who like them. They are. So relax. I don't judge. Don't get your dander up. It's just that they're not for me. But here I am paying for a card that I don't want to get for a figure that I do.

It's like when you take your car in for an oil change figuring you're only going to spend about 50 bucks. You sit there and they come back and tell you that you need this, that and the other thing. 3 hours later you're pulling out of there 500 dollars poorer. The old upsell. The oldest trick in the book. That's essentially what Disney and Hasbro are doing.

It gets tiresome. I feel like I'm being played. We're doing okay financially, but no one likes being taken advantage of.

The bottom line is this: If Hasbro can't put out a Man-Wolf or Starfox or Daredevil or Torch figure for 25 dollars or less, than either Disney/Marvel is going to have to lower their licensing fee or they should just stick to Spider-Man/Iron Man/X-Men. Either way I want out.

But ... I will think about it. There is, as Hubie points out, that Golden Age Torch coming. I should at least look at that. I've been waiting and asking for a long, long time.

Right now I'm leaning heavily towards getting out of the hobby, but I promised my lady to think about it first, and so I shall.

I've bought so many unwanted BAF pieces or characters I didn't want to get a BAF I've lost count. Always able to sell them off for a little bit and bring the cost down. Normally in the long run end up paying $35-50 for the BAF when you back out the other costs. However in the instances I wanted the characters but not the BAF pieces I ended up saving myself $5-12 on the figures I did. It goes both ways.

Its a pain but if you collect you have to be in the eBay game to some extant. I don't care if the character I don't want is Warbow or someone as popular as Deadpool. It's the same to me. If I don't want it; I don't want it. What is it the cowboy tells the Dude at the bowling alley bar? "Sometimes you eat the bear; and sometimes well he eats you" So it goes.

Now what was the one wave that was 6 MCU figures and the BAF was comic 6 or 7 years ago? Now THAT was some bullshit.

Was that the Mr. Hyde BAF wave with four MCU Shang Chi figures, a GamerVerse Captain America, and the hologram Iron Man? God, I can’t even remember if I bought the entire wave and sold off all of the figures except Iron Man or if I got Mr. Hyde loose from Dorkside before the wheels came off.

I remember when "To be or not to be?" was the question.

Now it's "How much longer are we going to let ourselves be jerked around by these greedy fucking corporations?"

I really wish the question was "plain or peanut?"

No doubt. Hasbro is brazen. Why sell us a highly demanded Deathbird when they could stick her with Gladiator and double their profits? It's like that with too many products now.

I would point out that you can participate in the hobby and dodge predatory items. Either don't buy them at all or buy the two-pack/BAF wave/whatever and sell what you don't want.

I'm curious: is Marvel Legends your only toy line? You could also collect, like, Savage Crucible figures or whatever instead.

I think there's a way to engage in the hobby without feeling like you're being had.

And, as I said earlier, even if you don't feel that way, you can keep what you have without expanding. My Marvel collection is nearly there. I'm happy enough with what I have. I could enjoy it in perpetuity even without any additions.
I meant to ask. Didn't Hasbro already make an astonishing Kitty? Or am I misremembering due to my vaccine high?
The Juggernaut wave figure is close. It's way too big, though. Mine hardly stands anymore; it's easily the worst thing I own.

Yeah the height on that figure has always annoyed me, especially after they re-scaled most female characters to be shorter right after that. Carol Danvers getting height-mogged by Kitty Pryde lmao.
