NECA - General Thread

seeing the Gargoyles so cheap has made me realize a few things about the line I hadn’t realized when it was alive/that year it was clearly dead but they didn’t say anything because they knew we’d be mad if we found out:

-oh these just DID NOT sell did they?! Real shame Macbeth and Coldstone didn’t squeeze out to complete the core season 1 cast but I’m glad we got Lex and Elisa to complete the hero clan at least! The fact they’re completely gone forever leaving Brooklyn capeless forever and preventing any possibility of making a fun set of clan repaint customs (I was going to make them Ninja Turtles!) shows how low their production run was and we’re lucky we got them at all!
-when presented with ample CHEAP (aside from these Big Bad sales, I had enough NECA rewards I could have gotten three free Demonas before I forgot to cash them in and they expired) fodder I realize I don’t want to fill my shelf with Mayan and Japanese gargles, I would have mindlessly purchased them if placed in front of me, but when told “you want Yama or Obsidiana that’s gonna be extra work!” I’m totally content with the figures I have and world tour one offs add nothing…

It’s kind of nice, like closure in a weird way.

Oh well, I hope Mondo at least gets to make Goliath and Demona (what with Gargoyles clearly not being all that popular after all, and Funko’s current troubles I don’t even think that’s a given!) and if they do somehow pull of the impossible and their Gargles line is vast and sprawling (turns out NECA’s problem was they needed to take up even more space and cost five times as much!) I’m fine not being there, as I’ve said before, there is no reality where a 1/6 set of the Pack makes me a happier more complete person

Among the clan, (old man) Hudson and Angela are the only ones who didn't get relaxed/drape/cape wings with another figure. Lexington can be posed so he's not "flashing" everyone, and the others got them with variants or other figures.

I'm sure that played some part in the line not doing as well as NECA was claiming. Why string us along and not even mention publicly the line was done, if that was the case.

At least with Angela, her wings are identical to Demona’s so if you bought Xanatos and the Vows two-pack the. You have a spare set of caped wings for Angela provided you’re willing to repaint them. Poor Hudson is left with his wings permanently outstretched.

Goliath and Broadway’s wings also fit on Hudson (Goliath’s give him a cool heavy cloaked look but cover his entire upper arms, Broadways leave his arms open so he’s more poseable) so if you find a cheap Sega Goliath, bought Bronx and the Vows pack, or wait for Detective Broadway to inevitably be $16 Hudson has options to cloak up too.

Yeah, they fit, but they're not the right sculpt since Hudson has tattered wings. It would take a bit more effort and customizing to make it work.

If that’s the case for Hudson then Demona’s wings don’t work Angela either, Angela holds her wings like Goliath (over the shoulder, rounded top) not like Demona (off the shoulder with a prominent ‘spike’ at the fold like a McF Batman cape)

So either the Vows two pack has “good enough” compromise wings for Hudson and Angela or they’re just naked, no win choices! Yay!

I haven't been keeping up on this thread so this likely has already been posted, but saw a bunch of NECA stuff at Walmart for $25 that used be $35. Gargoyles, Predator, Horror stuff..... It was it's own section in electronics. Sorry if this is old news like I'm sure it likely is. I don't personally buy a lot of NECA but this is a much more attractive price point.

I don't think it's been mentioned in here yet, but a local friend shared some pics that he got from people on Twitter of those setups.

The same types of figures in various organization layouts.

Thailog is very nice, esp for the price. It honestly shouldn't be difficult to customize him into a proper Argent the Wolf; but the best bit from him for my Grendel needs is probably the briefcase of cash, lol.

They were selling extremely well from what online places were saying. BBTS had Goliath up for orders for the longest time on the front page, if I remember right. And there was certainly fervor for each new release. If they weren't selling, NECA wouldn't have put in the effort to sculpt new figures like they did. The line couldn't have been cheap to produce.

I'm guessing preorders were strong for Goliath, but maybe not anyone else. It could have been a high cancellation line too. Goliath did seem to move pretty quickly at Target, and Demona and Bronx benefitted from the Haulathon frenzy and didn't appear to be shipped in large quantities. After that though it seemed to slow way down. I wouldn't be surprised if the online places were burned by Target usually getting them first and then maybe getting hit with preorder cancellations. Either way, if it had sold well it would still be ongoing.

Yeah, pretty sure it was you who called me a liar on Fwoosh when I said two years ago that the line was nearing done. I informed everyone there that Walmart had decided not to continue buying the line.

Your exact words were "Yeah, I don't believe you"...

I see you're still somewhat in denial.

The fervor was not nearly as existent outside of your home across the rest of the fandom.

NECA put out what they put out *in spite* of how the line was doing financially. They tried to keep it going as long as they could. If the line was as successful as you seem to think it was, it would still be going. But it's not. The end. That is only common sense. You don't end a line that is selling well. What are we talking about here, man?

To be fair, it was NECA themselves who hyped how well the line was selling in the beginning, boasting about the order numbers for Goliath and whatnot. Clearly, the enthusiasm didn't last much beyond him, unfortunately. I guess there musta been a big novelty effect. And my childhood tragedy of never getting this as a figure continues unabated:

And that's certainly fair. I do remember them hyping how well Goliath sold.

But at the point that I had informed everyone that the line was ending, we were getting into tertiary characters and variants, and like you said, the enthusiasm wasn't there.

I just have this thing about being called a liar. Big hang-up of mine. Mainly because healthy skepticism is fine, I get that. And I don't EVER accuse anyone of lying, and I would expect the same of others--as we are all adults here. And also this demand of my sources by a select few--like they are entitled to who I personally know. Lol

Getting way off topic. I digress. Just airing an old grievance, excuse me. Carry on.

Just based on my local collecting circle, Gargoyles had a diminishing interest because the initial nostalgia carried it, but a lot of people weren't really fans.

Not gatekeeping. It's just that they had a nostalgia for a thing, but as it unfurled they had less and less investment. Everyone knew Goliath. Everyone has an an awakening for Demona. Faded from there. You know how collector nostalgia and attention/budget span is.

Then the immediate feedback from most was "Oh, I wanted cartoon accurate designs."

Then the wing issue.

Then access and distribution in Canada.

Roster didn't expand quickly, and also lacked villains.

And thanks to distro and time, again, collectors cool off when your team isn't completing.

I think you can see a NECA reaction to this in how Ronin and the sequel, and now 2012 are just banging a diverse and quick line out, and those are all new and not easy sculpts as well. Feels like acknowledgement that the market needs to be hit hard and fast, like a 90s Image team battlecry.

Again, this is just based off the rise and fall convos I've had at shows or with collectors I run into.
