Figura Obscura

This is Fallout's Mothman:

I'd be looking for something more humanoid, though I like the moth-like head. Swappable heads are the best bet. Give us an owl head and an insect head.

My guess is it's not selling well and they felt the need to try to persuade folks.

I'd like it more if the neck were thinner and longer, but I wouldn't buy it regardless.

No doubt, though I don't think an explanation's going to move the needle. The folks who didn't like it already are only going to dig in and huff harder (thinking the "accuracy" is what's driving down sales). Sucks, but sometimes you do a swing and a miss.

I really liked the old Mezco Cryptid bug Mothman for looks, it was just his garbage articulation I could never stand (sold him recently in fact after years on my shelf). That articulation was from another era, but even for it's time it was not great. I at one point did the Stan Winston Studio online course about action figure design with the guy who made that sculpt and found out, surprise surprise, he basically does no work to figure out articulation (turns out it was more a sculpture course). His stance was you do the sculpt and "let the manufacturer figure out where the joints go". Just floored me. Some years later he was working on a short monster film and tried to kickstart a figure for the monster in it (which was like what if ninja turtles were cryptids) but he was dead-set on it being a Mego style figure and seemed flummoxed that not a lot of people were hot for it.

I definitely think I'd prefer something more humanoid. Swappable head would be nice. I think the thing I don't like about most Mothman designs is they take the source material a little too directly as inspiration, and as a result everything from the legs up is designed to be just a chunk of torso with little going on beyond the wings. I think there's probably ways to get the silhouette without turning the top half of the figure into a brick.
 
It does feel like they had to do a bit of damage control (or maybe they were stressing out because it was still available the next afternoon when they so often sell out on the spot and just want to goose sales). To me though I think it just looks like what 4H would make a Jersey Devil look like. It's on brand for them, and your mileage may vary based on knowing what their figures usually look like.
 
Take it for what it's worth, but 4H sent out an email this morning saying they're running low on Jersey Devils and they replied on Instagram that this is one of their best selling Figura Obscura drops. If I remember correctly, Krampus and the Headless Horseman had limited sale windows that ended before they sold out, but I seem to recall the rest of the Obscura releases lingering for days after they dropped. I think some folks were just being loud about their distaste for the design, but it could also be that 4H is feeling the need to get out in front of negative fan feedback after their blunder with Mr. Beast.

It looks like the Devil has very similar proportions to the upcoming hyena so I plan on eventually snagging the hyena's belt and shoulderpads to make this Devil a little more demonic and hide that awkward tranisition from his neck to his shoulders.

I'm glad to be seen. I'm also 100%fine with companies doing their own style. I'd love a more accurate Jersey Devil eventually, but this one will be fine on my shelf.
 
I don't think I understand why everything immediately has to jump to "Oh well it must not be selling well..."
 
If and when they ever do get around to Mothman, I'd like them to have some fun with it. Maybe somewhere in-between the famous caked-up statue and Charaxes from DC. Doesn't have to be too monstrous, but not too humanoid either.
 
To me, this is the mothman. This is the image I first saw of it when reading a book about cryptids when I was a kid. Something similar to this would be amazing, since it looks so completely different from most other monsters. Obviously, it wouldn't work as a normal action figure, but I think the 4H could make it work.

I think if there's one thing we can say, it's that given the Jersey Devil, the 4h version won't have much in common with that drawing. Ultimately the stuff they're putting out for Figura Obscura is still broadly usable in other lines. I think hewing too close to this would basically be a whole new, and largely not reusable figure. I'm not even really sure where you'd put articulation on that.

I sort of expect a Mothman from 4h to be a mix of new bits and stuff they've used for the more bug-like Cosmic Legions. Maybe with new wings.
 
Well, overall I LIKE this Jersey Devil, though I don't care for the transition from Head-to-body. Like other's have noted, it looks a bit like someone wearing an oversized Baphomet mask. I think some soft goods "fur" would definitely help with the transition. Sure, it isn't "accurate" to the original drawing, but I honestly never expected that from 4H. This is definitely more of what I pictured them doing, and can see much of it being repurposed for other demonic characters later on. It is a cool looking demon dude, and would work well in a display with Mephisto, or with Conan going toe-to-toe with him. I look forward to seeing what customizers do with this figure...I can imagine a N'astirh being made from these parts!

Right now, funds are a bit tight, so I may wait for the inevitable Retailer version (likely in a red color scheme). It's really cool, but it isn't something I felt an overwhelming NEED for in my collection like I did with Krampus or the Headless Horseman. I can wait a bit.
