General Marvel Legends

lol it's absurd and embarrassing the way some people go on about value or Hasbro being greedy.
"Yeah, suck it up, poors!" Underlying this "if you can't afford it, don't buy it" attitude is the belief that hobbies are for the rich. it's a classist garbage take.

And if you don't think Hasbro - whose CEO last year announced his intention to *double* profits - isn't viewing "Maximum" releases as test cases to gauge whether pricepoint can be raised yet further across the board, well...

To continue with the off topicness ...

Now that Mattel has the DC license what exactly are they going to do with it?

I don't have the slightest fucking idea. I'll find out when everyone else does.

Well, I do have a very slight idea. It's probably wrong, but what the hell. I think Mattel will introduce a new 6 inch line. Mattel loves to go head to head with Hasbro and battle for market share and shelf space. These are two rival companies that really don't like each other at all.

I believe the line will be a mix of animated, comic, movie, TV and video game figures. Probably no Peacemaker since that's R-Rated, but maybe they can make that online only. I believe they'll be available in fan channel and retail. They'll probably cost the same or maybe be a little less than what Hasbro charges.

But we'll see.

All I can say is maybe walk right up to one of these people and say “hey I’m sorry I did that it was wrong. I loved the line and I was upset. I never should have done that” and let the chips lie where they may. I’ve done that a few times; ex girlfriends etc. I can’t control if they forgive me but at least there’s a pathway there.

I’m not as big a DC person as others but I certainly like them. The DCUC big hitters I felt we never really got were Mr Freeze, Mad Hatter, Trickster, Granny Goodness, Kantu, Shade, Mera, Vandal Savage, Clarion Witchboy & Geo Perez Changling and the classic Capt Boomerang. I would have felt sated had we got those.

I honestly don't know what offensive Mandarin looks like. I have very little attachment to the character. I recall him with a green face in the IM cartoon. I know his Toybiz ML had a big rubber robe that told articulation to f-off and die. I've read very little comics with him in it. What's offensive about him?
You should really take a look at some of that early Mandarin art.

I just ran a few detailed searches through google and according to our AI overlords, Mandarin had 2 origin stories? In the original, his father was a wealthy descendant of Genghis Kahn and his mother was from English nobility. In the later retcon, the Mandarin claimed his mother was an opium-addicted prostitute but he was likely fabricating that story?
Here's one of the search results...

"The original comic book origin of the Mandarin describes his mother as an English noblewoman and his father as a wealthy Chinese man descended from Genghis Khan. A later, short-lived retcon in the Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. comics suggested that his mother was a prostitute, and he killed her pimp after discovering she was dead. This origin was not widely adopted and is not the current or widely known version. The Marvel Cinematic Universe retcon in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings establishes the "Mandarin" as an alias for a character named Xu Wenwu."
This was not in Director of SHIELD. This was in Fraction's Iron Man in an Annual that his origin was updated. Funny how often people seem to be confusing these two stories.

I knew someone was talking smack about the Super Friends back in the day, but I couldn't remember who 😀

At the height of my DCUC craziness, one of my Walmarts had a temporary storage area in the garden department with the area divided by a huge curtain. One night, I look behind the curtain and I see what looks like a DCUC case on the floor about 20-25 yds away. Ignoring the employee only sign, I run to the case, grab it, and run back to safety. It was quite exhilarating. I think it was wave 7?

So if I’m understanding this correctly, the more offensive origin, with his mother being a prostitute, born in the opium den, etc… this is the more recent one? I hope so, because I tend to ignore modern retcons of classic origins/stories.

One of the aspects of DCUC that I really loved was that it was like Marvel Legends in the early days. It was a COMIC ACCURATE line that paid homage to the early days of DC. I loved that. That's what made that line special to me.
Same here. I'm a huge Marvel fan, but I do enjoy DC as well. DCUC is still the best DC line I've ever collected. The variety of characters was impressive.
I'm always disappointed when a great classic line starts to wander away from what made it great in the first place. This is how I feel about Marvel Legends right now. The majority of releases are heavily focused on video games and animation. I'm not against that media, but I'm not really interested in collecting figures for it either.

That's correct.

Goddamn AI hallucinations!! I should have known better than to ask that sumbitch!!

I think you're better going to Akat or myself than to AI!

I think the most memorable one was at the very end when they were selling Doomsday wrapped up in his green suit. The fans wanted standard Doomsday but the one guy who was running that s-show said straight-faced that they were not doing standard Doomsday and the fans better just buy wrapped up Doomsday, because after that, that's it, they're done. Everyone fell for the scare tactic. Then what do ya know! They made a standard Doomsday! Woooooooowwwwww!

DCUC was fine up until they pulled the stuff out of the stores and did online only. The greed and the drama went waaaaayyyyyy through the roof. No thank you.
waited for a real doomsday and got it...but i am mad i didnt get the green suit one, cause it honestly looks cooler

Well, I can tell you right now that the reason DC Universe Classics was canceled at retail was because Warner Brothers Consumer Products pulled the plug. It wasn't sales. The line was selling well enough in stores that Wal-Mart was still asking for it's own exclusive waves. No, regardless of how well it was selling, DC Comics had just launched their bright, shiny new 52 and they wanted the merchandise to reflect that. No more classic anything. I know, I know. It sounds totally asinine and stupid but that's what WBCP was known for. I heard enough about them in my toy reporting days to know they were horrible to deal with. I felt sorry for any toy company that had the DC license.

I heard all that directly from Mattel. This was back when I was going to SDCC with a press pass. Before the show started I had gotten permission with Mattel's publicity department to interview the DCUC team at the Mattel booth. That's when they told me everything. That was supposed to stay off the record but since none of those people are around anymore screw the record.

I knew the online thing was never going to work. I'm astonished that it lasted for two years. Commit to a years worth of figures before you even know what they are? No thanks. I'm the biggest DC mark I know and even I wasn't going to do that. No way.

And so that was that. Normally it's greed and stupidity that ends a good action figure line but this time it was just stupidity.
hahah i totally did, cause i was in the bag for that line and DC.
