Tracking toy tariffs

I'll say, at least in my area, Dollar General is a setup that knows it's the only place people on low-income can afford, and it acts accordingly. There are multiple large grocery stores within 5 miles of every Dollar General near me, and there are at least 3 DGs in my city. They cater to extremely low-income families and college students (usually international college students who often live 4+ people to a 2 bedroom apartment). For those folks, there's nothing cheaper, and so DG doesn't worry about being even a passable store outside the bare necessities.

And it's not even that they're that much cheaper (because by volume, they generally aren't), it's that they know the folks shopping there get paid weekly or bi-weekly and don't have enough cash on hand to shop further in advance.

When you've got 'em by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.

A lot of companies taking a “wait and see” approach are going to move onto the “saw and hike” phase. Prices will probably go up with the holiday shopping season since most will view the market as less elastic during that period. People aren’t going to skip Thanksgiving dinner or not buy Christmas gifts.

Was at Walmart yesterday and saw that Hot Wheels are now $3.50 and just a couple of months ago they were $1.20. I can’t imagine anything else caused them to jump up in price so much in such a short time than tariffs. I remember the price because I was talking about it with my brother that we were impressed Hot Wheels had kept such a steady price for so long. I remember them being 99 cents at one point as a kid so only 20 cents more over a few decades was impressive. Then nearly tripling in just a few months after that. Crazy!

We'll have to see what the midterms look like when all the folks who were frustrated over inflation under Biden have spent a year watching everything spiral out after tariffs. I have no idea what the next election will look like, but I suspect "eventful" will be putting it mildly.

Is diecast impacted by the steel tariffs? Those went up and could have hit Mattel.

I hope you're right. Surprise, surprise, the media isn't covering the president's age or inflation with the nonstop drumbeat coverage it got under Biden. It's up to the voters to connect the dots.
