U.S. Politics

I wish we lived in a world where that pathetic show of a parade turnout would end a political career. If that had happened to Bush or whoever, they'd never stop talking about what a wasteful jerkoff session it was.

Saw some of the footage from the military parade, and I thought it was a meme at first. Almost no one on the stands, and one of the tanks rolling by with loud, squeaky wheels. Hilarious. And yet there'll still be claims of "the most glorious turn-out you've ever seen. Nobody has ever had a happier birthday than mine."

Spent an embarrassingly long amount of time arguing and trading quips with MAGA on one of the local news pages for a station back home. Am I proud of it? Not necessarily. I don't like stooping to their level, but like I've said before- I'm in a "matching the energy I'm given" phase. I know I'm not gonna change anyone's mind, and that's not my intent, but once the insults start turning homophobic, you can be damn sure I'm standing up for myself. My boyfriend wasn't too happy that I did, and again, I ain't proud of it either, but I went too long letting myself be bullied by others and letting it slide. I wasn't in a good headspace this weekend to begin with, and that just pushed me over the edge. The vast majority of them are nothing more than playground bullies, and sometimes you gotta give it back to 'em.

I've always maintained that there's really two reasons and only two reasons to argue online: Catharsis and bystanders. In the latter case, you're not really trying to change the mind of the person you're talking to - just as in a formal debate you're almost never trying to change the mind of the other debater. You're trying to sway the people listening (or reading) who haven't fully decided what side they're on, or who may be susceptible to changing their mind, or whatever.
Under those conditions, I would say it IS still worth it to argue with people online. Especially if you're arguing with solid, measured points and not just emotion.

Anyway, the 'gotta get rid of government waste and abuse' guy just spent 40-50 million dollars so he could watch a tank squeak its way down the street while seven people stared at it quietly. It's absolutely correct to say that any other president, at any other time, would have been resigning this morning. But really, any other president at any other time that tried to do this would have been forced to resign before the first troop transport even arrived in DC.
I can't imagine even George fucking W fucking Bush getting away with such a blatantly authoritarian piece of self-serving theater.

Our side for too long has tried to “take the high road” and be “above the fray”. It doesn’t work. Our entire culture is Tik Tok pwn’ing and internet trolling. Have to fight in the battlefield given. All they are all trolls.

In regards to the Michael Hobbes quote -- what's so infuriating to me about that is EVERYWHERE you look on social media, you have Trumpees and other Right Wing dingbats making snide, aggressive comments about how the Left is violent. I saw one post on a Lefty-run gun channel on YouTube claiming outright that The Left is more disposed to commit violent gun crime in response to the recent political ASSASSINATIONS. Yeah dude, it's lefties that are shooting up schools and theatres and concerts and night clubs. These people are still absolutely convinced (or want you to be convinced) that the guy that took a shot at Donald Trump was a Democrat despite being a lifelong registered Republican.

Right-wingers just don't live in reality.

45 million.

45 million dollars. Think about that. That's how much money was spent to massage this orange chimp's ego.

That's money that could have been spent to house homeless veterans.

I really ... really hate that man.

I highly doubt this administration's numbers for anything. I have seen lots of reporting that 45 million is a low estimate and could be as high as double that (90 million).

Not that I have the slightest bit of doubt that an egregious amount of money was spent on this, but I also wouldn't be surprised to find out the opposite. Not necessarily about the parade, but about any of the other atrocities to mankind. Do they strike me as the type to needlessly dump massive amounts of money into unnecessary things? Absolutely. But they also strike me as the type of people who would spend way less than need be on something and try to pass it off as the biggest, grandest thing you've ever seen. Or somewhere in the middle- they spend a gross amount of money, but only a portion of it actually goes to the event itself, and the rest into their pockets. I'm sure if there was ever a way to audit everything they've ever done, after the poor auditors are done picking their brains off the walls, we'd see multiple examples of all possibilities.
