Star Wars Movie and Streaming Series Discussion

There were two books I read that weren't YA about Obi-Wan and Anakin... one was Rogue Planet, which was closer to TPM in time, and the other I forget the name but introduced Barriss and Luminara before AOTC came out. It's a big reason why Barriss is my favorite background Jedi... certainly not due to the movies. But I enjoyed both, and could see something set in that period being enjoyable too. I don't even need them to Rogue One is as far as butting RIGHT up against the movie that follows this story. but really, any master/apprentice pair (Dooku/Jinn, Jinn/Kenobi, Kenobi/Skywalker) could make for a cool series of planet hopping adventures and mysteries. Get some Jedi fix in, explore strange new worlds (I know that's already a show), fill in some lore, etc.

On the 'stuff I brought with me leading to preconceived notions ruining the movie' front, I remember seeing the trailer for TPM and immediately hoping for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to be more like William of Baskerville and Adso of Melk in Name of the Rose. And if I were magically named showrunner or this master/apprentice series, that's definitely something I'd emulate.

YES YES YES this was my same hope, and same disappointment.

That's funny... I knew to watch that on my own!

And see, that's something... it didn't replace the movie for me, and I can still appreciate so much about both. They did things differently, but I kinda liked both versions.
 
Just saw a quote from Rory about taking over for Ray and they had side by side pics of them as Baylan. I've said from go that I love that character in ways that do not make enough sense for the amount of screen time he had and seeing the pics side by side I figured it out. Sorrow. The sorrow in Ray's eyes in every single scene. He looks sorrowful when he stops to fight Ahsoka. The dude looked haunted in a way I found just really true. Just makes me want to know what he's been through, what he's seen, what he's survived. Or maybe that was just Ray's own journey leaking through on screen.

At least most of what BD is relegated to is, again, tech-based things, which I don't know if the Force is as handy for. Sure. But in both cases this is still just 'video game contrives reason for existence of video game ability.' BD does tech stuff because Cal apparently can't, for some reason. Kay uses a sneaky pet because apparently she can't.... sneak... even though she sneaks around all the time? Like a fucking cat-sized creature running around stealing things and opening doors is somehow NOT extremely obvious. I dunno. I think it's dumb. Not saying anyone has to dislike those games, or video games in general, of course. It's just a peeve of mine.

I can't believe that Di$ney has not released the original cuts of the OT. It's absolute money in the bank. Do they not have access to them? Was it not part of the sale? How do they leave THAT money on the table? The original cuts on whatever the latest and greatest physical media is? There's no one that's not buying that.

Make no mistake, I prefer the original cuts, but I understand where Lucas is coming from when he defends his tinkering with the OT cuts. They (were) his and he had the right to do what he wanted with them whether we liked it or not. His vision of what he wanted it to be + the fans riding nostalgia = disconnect. I don't agree with Lucas but I do not blame him.

What would generate more nerd theater cheers, Cap lifting Thor's hammer or Han shooting first? I'm guessing the later.
 
There was a guy... Adywan? He tracked down every old print he could of the original Star Wars and digitally cleaned it up. He made it look WAY better than Disney's 4k releases. I know it was possible to get copies of that somehow a while ago but I haven't looked in some time. He did that, and he also did his own special editions, like adding a star destroyer by the Death Star in some shots, little things like that... taking Lucas's intent a little further.
 
Have any of you seen the new Star Wars Coke commercial? They have a commercial right now since they are going to have the Star Wars Coke special edition cans and bottle. But the commercial is sweet and captures the fun and joy of Star Wars.

Everyone heads to a theater to watch a screening of A New Hope, and they are all dressed up as Star Wars characters. But when the movie is interrupted due to "technical difficulties" everyone in the theater battles each other with their FX lightsabers and imaginations.

It's cute.
