The Chatty Pointless Thread

I should throw one on there at least...
Naturally. If anyone complains just say 'Damien made me do it.' Do not explain.

Today I learned what "Speed Metal" is.

Can I die now?
That depends. Have you also learned about doom metal, sludge metal, gothic metal, groove metal, shred metal, black metal, death metal, technical death metal, progressive metal, power metal, folk metal, thrash metal, symphonic metal, metalcore, grindcore, and djent?

Once you've gotten into all of that, you're gonna fucking love mathcore.

Dealing with some stuff at work and had the old man proud moment of making a room full of younger coworkers legitimately laugh at something I intended as funny.

First, said "if this keeps up I'm going to start smoking again and you're going to find me out back reenacting the Depressed Ben Affleck meme"

And then I got out of a meeting and said "I look like gentrification, I sound like gentrification, but on a spiritual level I'm the guy you see pouring Fireball nips into his Dunkin iced coffee in the Kappy's parking lot at 7 a.m. on a Wednesday and it is a daily struggle to not let that guy out during meetings"

What about Numetal?
Listen..... I don't even really like to characterize numetal as metal because it's actually just alt rock. BUT, I'll offer a little defense of it despite the terrible reputation it has in the metal community: Korn had a few bangers, Deftones definitely had a few bangers, and Linkin Park has gone on to be one of the formative alternative bands of the 2000s. Yes, MOST of the genre is utter trash, but that's probably true of most musical genres anyway.

You two are SO not invited to the fucking funeral.
Joke's on you... there's a sub-genre of doom metal called 'funeral doom' and I'm TOTALLY blasting it from a boom box on my shoulder while standing up on a hill overlooking your funeral.

Not to start a war but:

Korn had a few bangers
Not with Jonathan Davis “singing” they didn’t.

Deftones definitely had a few bangers
Not that I’ve heard.

Linkin Park has gone on to be one of the formative alternative bands of the 2000s
They certainly helped form my resolve to stop listening to alt-rock in the 2000s.

🤣

Naw but seriously: they hurt my heart, my ears and my soul.

🙃

How about Evanescence?
Amy Lee has an amazing voice. I love her vibe and a lot of the instrumentation.

That said: I can only listen to the unplugged stuff, or whatever recordings don’t have all the dumb record-scratching and the make-my-ears-bleed jackass “rapping” in the back ground.

“Can’t wake up! Can’t wake up! Saaaaaaave meeeeeee!”
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Oh sweet Cthulhu I want to carve out my eardrums with a rusty can opener and drop them in a bowl of acid.

Well that's fair, but they do have way better songs without that guy. They had some EPs from before they broke out that aren't acoustic but not over-produced that I think is outstanding, but also now hard to find damn them.

Yeah basically I am not into white-guy shrieking and talk-singing (particularly of that era/genre) AT ALL. And, like, I can definitely listen to *some* rap and hip-hop, but when (usually white) folks foist some hip-hop aesthetics into rock, I’m totally out (unless we are talking a mashup like the classic Run DMC/Aerosmith collab or Onyx and Biohazard combining to form Bionyx). Like I couldn’t even get into Rage Against the Machine until I was an adult because I just couldn’t stand the vocals.

Basically: numetal’s general aesthetic and musical stylings are everything I hate about music. It feels like a bunch of insecure white dudes whining and I fucking HATE IT.

To be fair, I hate whining white boys in any genre: can’t listen to the Dave Matthews band and other late-90s/early 2000s TRL butt-rock either.

A lot of it is also cultural to me: growing up and as a young-ish adult, the skeeziest, grossest whitebros I knew were the ones listening to this stuff and I wanted nothing to do with that.

I actually... don't like Rage either. I appreciate things they say and their stance on stuff, but nah. I like Audioslave heh.

That is completely fair. With me, I am notoriously bad at picking up on lyrics. I'm often worried about some songs I really like because I hear the vocals as just another instrument and when I like a song it's because of the composition, and RARELY because I like what they're saying because 9/10 I have no idea what that even is. So for all I know, some of my current favorites could be about horrible things and I'm just enjoying the guitar riffs and harmonies. But yeah, a lot of 90s industrial stuff I enjoyed listening to eventually seeped through and some I was still able to enjoy the music despite noticing what a whiny douche the singers came across as. There's heartbreak and then there's Ah Christ Already.

Speaking of... I REALLY try to not say anything when my daughters are listening to Olivia Rodrigo, and I am really glad she has turned her heartbreak into massive success, but ah Christ already Liv. A teenage boy told you forever but didn't mean it, I understand but Christ.

Ah man, Dave Matthews... I believe you about the whining but just his music turns me off like nobody's business.

And I TOTALLY get that. It really helps that I don't socialize much beyond my circle, heh, otherwise I'm positive I'd feel the same way.
