McFarlane DC Multiverse

Well now that I’ve had 7 inches I can’t go back to 6.5! Pause

Seriously I’m not interested in restarting so outside of Teen Titans and Young Justice figures who actually look like teens depicted in the comics I’m probably not waiting for Mattel’s 2027 plans.

I’m really hoping McFarlane stays to keep releasing the Absolute line and movie figures.

I just don’t see Mattel focusing on certain live action figures like Lanterns vs doing classic comic figures

Counterpoint: “basic” means “kids”. And we all benefit from new generations of kids getting excited about these characters. I, for one, want there to still be a Batman long after I am personally stardust and irrelevant.
Yeah, I’ll die on this hill with you. Comics in general need to do a better job of attracting new fans. The large Barnes and Nobles near my house has four shelves of American graphic novels and about ten shelves of Manga.

It also seems as though Todd has attempted to poison the well and salt the earth. He’s flooded the zone with Batman product, and removed himself from the toy aisle in Wal Mart. And by putting out some of this crazy character selection, he’s raised the profile of these types of characters to the buying public. I’m getting Captain Carrot and Guardian from Todd. I don’t really want another Green Lantern or Superman now.
Did Todd remove himself from the Walmart toy aisle, or was he ejected and his last ditch save was Electronics?

Honestly, that sentence right there is why Todd lost the license. He lost the toy aisle!

Well hopefully these basic figures are well sculpted and decently articulated. The two lines could handle way more characters being released and or different versions of the same character. Depending on the execution it could be a great idea, as not all characters require ultra articulation or a lot of accessories. Again, as long as there's a good sculpt there, it could work. But then the basic line could also just be more spin master kids stuff, so...

When do you guys reckon we will see these first figures? I bet the images will get leaked somehow, but maybe in toyfair?

Most of the DC stuff I like is Batman related with a few exceptions in the Superman/JLA/Green Lantern arena. By and large I'm likely to be done with DC after McFarlane finishes up. There just aren't enough DC characters that I want that I think Mattel would do that McFarlane hasn't done.

And what is 6.5in figures, 1/12th scale? I know 1/10 is 7in like what Todd does, but is Mattel intending to just make their whole line a half inch shorter on average than Todd's

Technically, Marvel Legends are around 6.5" tall. They're bigger than SWB which is more of a "true" 1/12 line, so in theory the Mattel line scale with MLs.

I think this is a move to ensure that he can hold onto DCD in some capacity going forward. Busts, statues, props, fine art prints, and miscellaneous higher end merch. Low production run, exponential markup type stuff.

but I just keep coming back to the aspect of starting over again. Again.

So...don't? The only person who can make you start over from zero again is you, my guy. And this isn't one of those "if you don't like it, don't buy it" type of posts, I'm just saying that if you are genuinely not wanting to start over again then simply don't. There is LOTS of product out there, arguably better product, that you could spend your dollars on instead. Fondjoy is hitting their stride, and I know you're not into the movie stuff but they'll hit comics eventually. Beast Kingdom is doing comic stuff now.

There's LPZZ, there's Gong, Mezco, Mafex...3rd party companies like Chaos just put out two absolutely gorgeous Dark Knight Returns Batman and Superman figures...lots of options for your hard earned dollar. If you genuinely do not want to start over with Mattel, then...don't.

I'm a Superman and Batman guy, those are my top 2. I'll probably pick up Mattel versions of them just to toss them on a generic Superman/Batman shelf. But I'm not starting over and rebuilding teams, I'm generally done with the mass market toy aisle DC stuff when the license changes. I just have too much invested in McFarlane to want to start over with another company. However, I will be continuing to buy better product from other companies.

And before anyone says "they cost too much" once you go for quality over quantity you'll see how bad that argument is lol

I'm wondering if these will be the same size as DCUC. Sounds like they might be, and if that's the case, I'd be happy to switch gears and continue that line. I never got rid of my DCUCs and have all the bat-related they've made. I was much more of a completist with that line. While I'm not interested in redos, I'd get costume versions that Mattel never made. For example, if Wave 1 offered Fraction Batman rather than Rebirth Bats, I'd pick it up. Otherwise, I'll wait it out and pick up some of the figures still on my want list.

My favorite time as a collector was when DCUC was in its prime (when DCD finally got the Super/Bat license was my second favorite era). You never knew what characters might show up. Todd's that way now, but with his inaccurate sculpts full of reuse and his oddly stiff articulation scheme (we need a thigh cut!), I'm often disappointed when I finally get a character I've always wanted.

That said, fingers crossed Todd gets to keep BTAS and Super Powers, as those both keep hitting the mark for me (even if I have to sell off a whole wave of figures to nab guys like Condiment King and Lock-Up). There's only a handful of BTAS I still really need, but I'd keep buying until the well runs dry with the likes of Captain Clown.

This is the other possibility for me. The figures I've enjoyed most in the last few years aren't long time wants like Ragman and Kiteman, but my Knightfall Mafex Batman and Mezco's Dick Tracy figures. I've been eyeing that Mafex Azrael Batman for a while now. Seems worth way more than 3 or 4 McFarlanes, honestly...
