Mattel DC Figures

I don't have a ton of strong feelings on Shadowpact, but Nightshade and Enchantress being Suicide Squad regulars means they're high on my list. And I'm a fan of both of them individually anyway. (I like witchy Enchantress best, though. Put on a pointy hat if you're gonna cast some spells!)

Now, if we're talking obscure-ish teams, I love the heist crew from Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League and would like to see them as action figures and more frequent robbers of the Justice League, who are super-dorks.

This is a thing that bothers other comics readers? I don't look at a new costume and think, "I want answers!" the same way I don't demand explanations as to why people in my life have changed their clothing.
It bothers the ones I don't care to talk to about my hobbies. I learned really quick who not to engage with at my shops.

I don't know why debating if costumes or eras have a place in toys is even a thing. Every toy line ever, every other thread on this forum, has people justifying why they want something whether they have a tie to it or not. If it's cool, we come up with reasonings when all you need is "I liked it".

Of course Mattel is going to do old comics. And news flash, what I grew up with is old and outdated and the youth don't even want to read it. Even Todd's shit is steeped in the 90 and 00s nostalgia which, brace yourself, is hitting 30-40 years old. In the 90s I wouldn't even look at a seventies comic because it was old man shit, and routinely we see Legends fans asking for "recent" stories like Onslaught or Clone Saga to get rep. Nostalgia is the bread and butter of Capitalism and Americana.

And of course they're gonna do Absolute and Dan Mora and whatever else. Not because it's Absolute or Rebirth or Dan Mora or whatever. Because its adjacent to everything else that they sell, and people will buy it. Guarantee you all the "I would never get Absolute Batman" you see on Facebook and Insta are the first people in line with InArt drops theirs because FOMO and hivemind and the cold embrace of mortality and the human need to feel relevant to their peers.

This thread has become ridiculous hypothetical spreadsheet wheel spinning.

As someone who went in and out of McDick Multiverse, I'm first to be a little bummed they finally hit a stride and found a voice five years into it (and that still isn't even Great, being real). But what are you doing by trying to weave hypothetical unwinnable X-Files just because it's annoying to have to reset or retire, depending on tastes.

All the "just asking a question" and observational wheedling about what Mattel could, should, would do comes across as some softboi soft launching his crush to his girl best friend without taking responsibility for any of the consequences or outcomes.

The only person who is going to be wanting in any of this is @Damien and those favourite picks are just self-harm, he knows.

I fully agree, I do like her costume in the Shadowpact run a lot, but it's nowhere near as charming as the witch look. Especially given the romance she has with Nightmaster. You pair the witch with the knight, but only AFTER she stops looking like an archetypical witch? Come the FUCK on, man.

Nightshade, she's my #2 fave of the team and I like her Shadowpact costume the best, great modernization of the Charlton look (which is the #2 for her), and the rest are just alright. Some day I'll read Suicide Squad. My sister's been beating me over the head with it, I've read plenty of Charlton comics, every single Ragman appearance (excluding New 52-onwards, just couldn't stand him there), half of Blue Devil, everything Nightmaster, some Detective Chimp, and yet not Suicide Squad, somehow.

Alright this board's going to get real uninhabitable if we're just going to be launching barrages at teenage me like that.

Actually, depending on the person posting, this thread does *not* make the workday go by faster.
😉
It’s a chore and a half to read through the:

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Shadowpact was a real chore for me to get through, and I was reading it when it came out. I bought them because of Ragman, but man, was he wasted in that series. Never thought Willingham had a grasp on the majority of DC characters he touched (Tim Drake Robin and Leslie Thompkins being his two biggest sins), but I love minor DC characters and really wanted to like that book.

Now Suicide Squad, on the other hand, was a book I absolutely loved. Really enjoyed that title and how the threat of death was very real for the characters. Waller's backstory in that book has never been beaten, and they really gave Barbara Gordon her power back.

I can respect that, while Shadowpact is my favorite team book I've read from Marvel or DC, I'm just happy seeing people have read the run, even if they disliked it. It's considerably niche as far as I'm aware, and most people in the circles of comic readers my age don't really go out of their way for older runs like that.

And I generally agree, the characters in Shadowpact have their previous stories and characterizations basically entirely irrelevant outside Nightmaster, and I wish that weren't the case. Bit hard when half of them are basically reinvented for the run, though. I was happy with how Rory was handled overall, but I do wish his characterization and background from the two miniseries were a bit more relevant. Those two are among my favorite DC runs and are the entire reason I read Shadowpact.

We can argue all day about modern versus classic, points of articulation, accessories, and paint apps, but the one universal truth is that every single one of us wants the 1980s Batman and the Outsiders team, complete with Looker, Atomic Knight, and Windfall.

I'm glad we can all finally agree on something.

And the 1980s Brotherhood of Evil...

If I'm not the first then I will be the first I'm not buying anything Absolute from Mattel and especially not the big ridiculous shaped looking Batman as an action figure.

I’ve been a Batman fan for 40+ years (comics, media, figures, etc.), and I really enjoy/appreciate Absolute Batman (and the absolute universe in general). I would totally buy Absolute figures from Mattel, and I suspect a lot of other folks would too.

My pet theory is that DC is not letting Mcfarlane make them so that Mattel can kick off their higher end lines with them.
