The Boyo and I just got back from One Battle After Another, and we....didn't care for it.

I don't quite know how to put it, but it just didn't connect. It didn't feel mean-spirited exactly, but maybe....a bit too timely and real? I don't think it quite knew if it wanted to treat certain things as serious or funny. Leo's character was totally passive the whole time- was really hoping for some sort of redemption for him, but...nah. Sean Penn gave a great performance, but man, what a scumbag. Didn't really find myself rooting for anyone and left feeling uncomfortable. And maybe that's the point? I don't know.
I definitely feel like maybe I missed something- I see all this praise for it, and I feel like something maybe went over my head? I feel like I got what they were going for, it just didn't land with me. Don't get me wrong- it's a totally competently made movie. Maybe I'm just not smart enough for the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson.
Ach, Loreena McKennitt is awesome.
I'll tell him you said so! He'll be thrilled to hear someone else likes her. He actually just got back from a trip to Canada to see her. He's actually pretty close with her assistant, and helped usher some of her concerts this past week and hung out with her briefly backstage. He's met her a handful of times and says she's very personable, especially to folks in Stratford, where she lives. The one time I met her she was lovely. She's become a bit of a running joke with us, though- since she's so outwardly sweet, we've naturally turned her into a chain-smoking, deep-voiced cockney woman when discussing her. As you do.
