but I think in all honesty he's hardly had any comedies written to the levels he can execute.
Agreed! Reilly elevates Farrell, but neither Farrell himself nor the material featuring him is ever ever *close* to Reilly’s level of macro-styles acting skills.
What makes Reilly an even *better* actor is that rather than dunk on Farrell or “outclass” him, be meets him on his level and leverages his own work to support rather than conflict or “top”. THAT is the real shit: having the sensitivity and the ability to form true collaborative relationships with fellow actors, regardless of relative skill/talent/whatever.

I think Rian Johnson is the kind of director who fosters and encourages that kind of dynamic in his casts, especially the Knives Out films.

it's one of the ones I make straight men who DoN't lIKe MuSiCaLs watch. They love it.
I’m a straight man who DOES like musicals, and I find the Dreamgirls film to be . . . complicated.
Murphy is great, Hudson is great, the film is well-made . . . but there is a giant, sucking hole of awful at its core in the form of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, who (sorry, fans) cannot act her way out of a paper bag and is just universally disappointing to watch in any film. She’s utterly, woefully miscast beyond the most superficial “famous person known for singing songs” read.

I’m sure I’ll catch maximum heat because she has such a massive following, but I cannot stand her. I almost walked out of Goldmember, I was legitimately shocked they would put someone that awful in the movie. Honestly not a fan of Destiny’s Child or her solo work either, but that’s more about it not being my taste than thinking it is *bad*. But woof: she’s a rotten actor.

Absolutely agree. Reilly seems to show up legitimately thinking "what will be best for the project" first.

I think that dovetails with something I've noticed about Rian's work in general. He seems like a real humanist. The dude likes people. He likes working with them, he likes talking with them, he likes putting them on camera and making them look like a million bucks. I hope that's not some clever Hollywood facade, but at least on a surface level it seems like he runs his shoots in a way that's professional, but not miserable.

I like Beyonce as much as the next Black American/gay guy does but most of us freely admit she is a terrible actress like Madonna before her. Dreamgirls is the one film she's in where she rises to the occasion and that's largely because of everyone around her + Bill Condon's direction + the role playing to her strengths. She's basically playing Diana Ross, who was basically the Beyonce of the 60s - 80s. Dreamgirls is very close to a perfect movie for me. Memoirs of a Geisha is actually a perfect movie for me.

He seems like a real humanist.
Given how his partner, Karina Longworth, speaks on her ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT podcast “You Must Remember This”, I suspect you are correct.

Also: if you have any interest in film at all, PLEASE listen to that podcast. It’s frigging great. So many topics, such fantastic insight. I got sucked in by her deep dives into the Hollywood Black List, Charles Manson’s Hollywood ties and especially her multi-episode arc “Boris and Bela” (highlighting the intertwining careers of Karloff and Lugosi). She’s *definitely* a humanist, a strong feminist and a strident antifascist. I would recommend literally any episode/season. My wife and I have spent many long drives listening to her “Erotic 80s” season and its sequel “Erotic 90s”. Really fascinating stuff. “Six Degrees of Song of the South” pretty much speaks for itself.

Go listen! You will all thank me.

Well when you put it that way, how can I say no? I'll add it to my list.

Getting back to Weird, I mentioned to one of my wife's brothers how good Radcliff was in that. I told him I would put it on but I remember it as being inappropriate for the kids and mentioned some of the madonna stuff. He said "oh yeah I remember that." I said no, that stuff isn't real and he SWORE it was. I asked if she also became a drug lord in Colombia but apparently not.

Still haven't jumped on board the K-Pop Demon Hunters train, but something tells me that's about to change. I'm flying home for the holidays in a few days, and my nibling is a big fan of it. I don't think I'll be allowed to sleep under the same roof if I haven't seen it.

A question for ya'll- what are some of your favorite movies to watch around the holidays? Whether Christmas-themed or not? I wanna show the boyfriend some fun holiday movies; he's Jewish, so didn't grow up with a lot of the same ones. He's seen some of the classics- Home Alone 1 & 2, I showed him Die Hard last year, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc. I think the plan this year is to show him It's A Wonderful Life (my mom's fav) and the Jim Carrey Grinch, but what are some of your holiday musts, conventional or not?
The Snowman
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the original animated short)
A Charlie Brown Christmas
A Claymation Christmas Celebration
The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (RankinBass)

Ahhh all those should have been on my list!

Oof, The Snowman is haunting. That *song*! I was just listening to Celtic Woman’s cover the other day.
