X-Men '97

That's really it. I tend to follow talent over characters and franchises anymore. Sometimes it lines up perfectly (Absolute Wonder Woman).

I love finding small press indie books. What was yours?
I’ve done a number of books, both on my own and as part of other publishing groups.

My main character Steel Wolf has had several books released, including a team-up with Vito Delsante & Sean Izaakse’s Stray, as well as Dan Hoins’ Thunder Woman and Cuong Nguyen’s Midnight Owl. I also did The Indieversity Guidebook, which showcased a large number of Indie worlds and characters.

As part of Coalition Comics, I’ve worked on The Power Company, and as a partner at G-Man Comics I do Taranis the Thunderlord as well as The First Guard.

Ultimate Spider-Man, I love it. I can no longer relate to 20-something, "down on his luck" Peter trying to decide if he wants to date hot Gwen, hot Mary Jane, or hot Black Cat.
Instead we've got Pete married to Mary Jane (the hottest she's ever been drawn), his son into Black Cat (incredibly hot), and Harry married to Gwen Stacy (also super hot).
But there's good things out there.

And if you like X+Men at all and haven't read Krakoa era, at the very least House of and Powers of, I think you're just cheating yourself, as my old weight coach used to say. But honestly, after Hickman bailed and Marvel kept it trundling forward, you can drop that. I don't think it paid out. But that first intro? Quality.

I do love how cyclical and age gated comics can be. I love talking to older fans who found the stuff I loved and grew up with to be the "trash" that they ejected their pull lists over. Outback X-Men. 90s. Morrison X-Men. Etc. I do it myself while other people I know scramble the things I dropped.
This is right.

Every era has great books and bad books. People talk about how good Uncanny X-Men was in 1985, but you'll notice they never bring up Marvel's Ewoks or Coyote from the same year. In 20 years, they'll talk about how good Absolute Wonder Woman or Ultimate Spider-Man was, but they won't mention the dreck.

I can point to at least one title from every half-decade that blew my socks off. Yes, even the '90s.

So, for those of us planning on making Gyrich his own man in our displays, which suited body are you thinking of for him?

I’m planning on the green suited Professor X body myself. I’d love to get an extra but the only one I can find online right now is $30.

Hoverchair Xavier has a coupon on Amazon right now for $46, but maybe that's just me.

Did anyone ask the team about 97 Beast?

It's got to be the green suited one.

Yeah, MJ is a smoking hot mamma in USM (and you might be right about her being the hottest ever, now that I think about it), and the other girls too because comics. I just appreciate the status quo that they have set up. Different than what Lee and Ditko were doing and yet still very Spider-Man.

Oh crap, it’s Jonathan Hickman on USM? Has he apologized for using the R word yet?

As a 90s kid, that word is part of my vocabulary. This is coming from someone who's autistic, and one of my best friends growing up was very autistic. Most of my friends now use it in the same context I do as well. I don't find it offensive. I guess some people do?

Born in ‘78, and I have always known that the “r-slur” was, like the “f-slur”, a very serious and absolutely unacceptable thing to say.
And now, as a mental health professional, I feel even more strongly.
I never used that term, especially as an insult, and I never will. And yeah, I’ve always absolutely walked away with a negative opinion of anyone who does.

Very disappointing to hear this about Hickman.

Yeah, it's a slur. No one can stop you from using it out in the world, of course. It's not illegal or anything. But it's not good and if you can slowly teach yourself to stop using it, you should.

A lot of guys that work for me also use it from time to time, and I actively try to discourage it. One thing I'll give my guys is that they do try to teach themselves out of bad habits, even if it doesn't always work, once someone tells them 'hey man, it's not cool to say that anymore.' I'm sure it helps that I'm the boss and if they keep saying it I will fire them. But still! They're not grumpy about it. They're actually pretty receptive. Except for one guy. But I fired him.
