X-Men '97

Hey, don't drag Mystique into this!

It's curious to me how she's pretty much the only major X-player to not even get a cameo in '97.

Oh, speaking of - was there any news on S2 at SDCC? Release date?

That's the problem with the neverending storytelling though. Comic characters that hang around for 40+ years eventually get every inch of their lives explored - especially ones as popular as Wolverine. And the "mysterious past" angle can only be stretched out for so long for a character that gets dozens of stories published about them every month for decades. I didn't need a backstory either, but it was inevitable that they'd eventually write one - and I don't think it would ever have been satisfying, no matter what it was.
Suppose that's why Claremont didn't want Never Ending Story. What might have been...

Anyone know what date & time the X-Men 97 boxsets go up on Pulse? These are the only one's I've concerned myself with as it's through a single dealer and that's it.

I stopped reading Marvel stuff (except Thor) in 2012 as a result of the AvX crossover. It all got to be too much too often. Crossovers interrupting the flow of normal storytelling. I also stopped reading DC in 2011 as a result of the Nu52. It was obvious I wasn’t their target anymore.
You quit around the same time I did. Cyclops killing Xavier was the "ok, that's enough for me," moment, Phoenix Force or not. Since then it's mostly been the X-Men fighting themselves and I've saved money ever since.

I don't think it's been announced, but once it has, someone will definitely post it here. Dan will likely share it on socials.

I dropped off X-Men with Onslaught. Mostly out of fatigue and just feeling like I needed to move on from comics, not because the story was bad (though it wasn't great). I did pick up Ultimate X-Men and enjoyed that for a time, but it felt like it ran out of steam. I think I dropped off of that when Sinister was introduced as just some guy with an Apocalypse effigy made out of trash in his bedroom that he thought was real.

Can't remember which thread I saw it discussed in - but it's very interesting how inconsistent the width of the brown on Wolverine's torso is between the promotion material and the samples they had at SDCC. I prefer the darker colors on this release over the lighter tones on the Secret Wars release... the head is just too cartoony for the comic shelf.

And he dressed like a gangmember, flashing a pistol and threw Xavier down the stairs, pointing out that they were Xavier's "natural enemy."

I really liked Ultimate X-Men up until they introduced grunge Dazzler, Angel and made Nightcrawler a kidnapping nutcase that no one could understand because he didn't speak English...and then just one day he could.

The early issues with Millar writing I thought were some of the best X-Men "movie adjacent" stories that ever came about.

Yea, I hope the sample is more the case than the promo material. Both are a little off and the width as it hits the belt isn't the thing bugging me. The brown is arcing up a little too high on his pecs, which is making the taper more narrow and throwing off the color balance a little. Given how little screen time this costume got I'm surprised they didn't manage a totally screen-accurate deco there, although the promo pic version looks to have taken the exact shaping of the Secret Wars paint design.

The whole Ultimate line was too self-consciously edgy or else too self-consciously “of the current moment” for me to enjoy at all.

“Peter Parker is a web designer now, GET IT?!? Cuz webs, and the internet is SO HOT RIGHT NOW!”

Barf.

It wasn't for everyone, but it sold. I loved most of the Peter Parker stuff and the early X-Men was great.

Same with this new Ultimate Spider-Man - I haven't read a single issue, but there seems to be a market for a new Ultimate Universe given the spin offs.

There is this uneasy truce between something being popular (aka selling) and subjectively being good quality.

There are landfills full of art you've never seen but would consider brilliant. Take your pick. Comic book stores smell (subjectively) better.

At the time, the Ultimate universe made sense as they were trying to make it easier for new fans to have a jumping on point as these characters invaded cinemas. And they weren't at the expense of the main line. I liked both X-Men and Spider-Man at the onset, but both went off the rails eventually for me, but that's pretty much something that has happened with every line of comics I've ever been into unless it had a defined end date.

I would argue, as someone who pages through the odd Marvel comic every week... that we are in the shittiest era for comics. At least during my lifetime. The 90s was gimmicky bliss with animated tie-ins. The 2000s has some very memorable events of divisive quality. The 2010s had some good events I gave a bit of a shit about. The only thing I get excited for right now, and it's very much a personal bias, is when Ben Reilly comes back. And 90% of that has been dogshit.
